Reminder: Fruit of the Month-Local Fuji Apples

marketnotes
Produce Market Report November 18, 2014

GOOD BUYS

Moving fast, these local apples, sourced from Bear

Mountain Orchards in Aspers, Pennsylvania, are a big
hit. Fujis are a cross between Red Delicious and
Virginia Ralls Janet. The slight red blush of the first bite
of the apple reveals a super-sweet taste due to 10%
higher sugar content than other varieties.

GOOD BUY
Asparagus
Butternut, acorn
and spaghetti
squash

Raspberries, blackberries
and blueberries: All these

Asparagus: What a perfect

time for plentiful and
gorgeous asparagus from
Peru to be so reasonably
priced! We also have
purple asparagus.

Butternut, acorn &

spaghetti squash: Plenty of

berry varieties are much

better options this week
than strawberries.
Raspberries are protected
from the bad weather by
being grown under hoops
making their supplies
plentiful. Blueberries are all
from South America now
and the supplies are ample
with great quality.
Blackberries are coming in
reliably from Mexico.

local hard squashes at good

prices. Ample shipments
from Pennsylvania still
arriving. We also have
labor-saving peeled butternut.

Root vegetables: Turnips,

rutabagas, parsnips and celery
root are great cool weather
veggies to keep in mind now.

Chestnuts and mixed nuts:

Chestnuts just arrived from Italy
and we have mixed nuts in stock.

Pomegranates, quince and

persimmons: Good supplies and
nice quality from California still
available.

Cranberries: Loads of beautiful

crimson berries in stock.

Mangos: The Brazilian

mango crop has finally
matured, where the fruit is
super sweet and ripe enough
to yield to a soft touch. The
prices have declined nicely
as well.

Mountain is sending their

last shipment of delectable
bosc pears and the price is
less expensive than western
fruit.

Local Apples: Great buys

and terrific quality is what
you can expect with Fujis,
Galas and awesome
Honeycrisp apples from local
sources. The Pink Lady
variety is just starting and it
has a very pretty blush.

WATCH
Strawberries: It is virtually
impossible to find high quality
strawberries and there is no
relief in sight. Rain in California damaged the last of the
crop there and new fields to
the south are not ready yet.

Bushel green beans: As we

predicted, the bean market is
very active as we approach
the holiday. One major bean
grower in Florida was wiped
out with recent rains and the
price elsewhere almost
doubled.

Celery: Another Thanksgiving
