The 5 Parts of the FIST

Communication
I’m going to tell you the truth if you’re doing
something bad, if you’re doing something
mediocre, or if you’re doing something
great.
The 5 Parts of the FIST

Trust
When we tell each other the truth and talk to each other
face-to-face, trust is going to develop. How many of you
really trust someone? Some of you may not trust
anybody. But if you’re part of something that’s bigger
than you, something that you identify with, something
you throw yourself into, then you will be more apt to be
able to trust the people in that room.
The 5 Parts of the FIST

Collective Responsibility
We win and lose together. This is OUR
weight room. This is OUR game. This is
OUR field. A fist embraces plural
pronouns.
The 5 Parts of the FIST

Caring
We care for one another! If something
happens, we’re there for each other,
all of the time. ALL OF THE TIME!
The 5 Parts of the FIST

Pride
If we do all of these things over and over,
we develop the pride of being in that
fist – whatever: it’s a Team fist, a
church fist, a family fist, a business fist,
etc…
Philosophy of Football
ƒ Football is a game of Field
Position
ƒ The most important statistic is
your Takeaway Ratio
ƒ Football is a tough, physical game
ƒ We will eliminate mistakes
ƒ We will be fundamentally sound
Coaching Philosophy
ƒ We will LOVE our players
ƒ We will be LOYAL to the program
ƒ We will create a positive, disciplined
program
ƒ We will be a first class program
ƒ We will be successful by playing as a
team
ƒ We will demand and accept nothing less
than the best at all times
ƒ “Good is the enemy of Great”
ƒ Stress Fundamentals Daily
Coaching Philosophy
ƒ We only be critical of a player’s actions
ƒ We will help each player on the team
attain his fullest potential, regardless of
his athletic ability
ƒ We will have a “hands on” approach on
the field and off
ƒ We will be great teachers
ƒ We will reward success, punish failure,
and enforce responsibility
Coaching Philosophy
ƒ We will eliminate the word “DON’T”
from our vocabulary.
– Always tell a player what to do
ƒ All of our Special Teams, Offensive,
and Defensive schemes will:
– 1. Be simple to learn
– 2. Have the ability to give multiple looks
– 3. Be fundamentally sounds
– 4. Be adaptable to our personnel

Management
Goal Setting
ƒ Why do you play?
ƒ What do you want to accomplish?
ƒ What kind of player do you want to be?
ƒ How will you get from where you are now
to where you want to be?

ƒ Tom Landry, NFL Hall of Fame Football

Coach
– “Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding
how you will go about achieving it and staying
with the plan.”
Goal Setting
ƒ Types of goals:
– Outcome, Performance & Process Goals
– Long Term Goals – Annual or season
– Near Term Goals – weekly or parts of the
season

specific
ƒ Make your goals SMART:
– Specific

Lou Holtz
Visualization
ƒ Rehearse plays, techniques, drills, etc.
anytime – MENTAL REPS
– Your body reacts to a mental rep in the same way
it reacts to a physical rep
ƒ Reduces mental errors
ƒ Allows you to see the game more clearly
– Slows things down, movements become
“AUTOMATIC”
– Creates a “déjà vu” experience
ƒ Allows you to be mentally and emotionally
prepared
Visualization

Jim Brown
Grip vs Gravity Forces
ƒ Grip forces are within your control
ƒ Gravity forces are not within your control
ƒ Work within the gravity forces of the task.
– These forces are out of your control
– Accept them. Blend and adapt instead of fight!
ƒ Focus on what’s in your control
– Attitude, effort, preparation
– NEXT Play
Categorize Stress
