Jobs 2 REQUIRED:
All applicants must meet the following basic requirements for all grade levels:

Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review
Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or
educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary,
U.S. Department of Education.

Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)


examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements

for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification.


Education and Experience Requirements:
Applicants who meet the above basic requirements may qualify for the following grade levels if they meet the
educational and/or specialized experience requirements described below.
GS-07 : Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at this grade level:
Completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program (certificate of completion, associate degree, or
bachelor's degree);

OR
Completion of a bachelor's degree in a related health care or health related science and graduation from an
accredited physician assistant educational program.
GS-09 : Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at this grade level:
A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant equivalent to the GS-07 grade level
and graduation from an accredited physician assistant educational program as described above;
OR
Completion of the Master of Physician Assistant Studies;
OR
Completion of a master's degree in a related health care or health related science and completion of an accredited
physician assistant educational program. Examples of related master's degree programs include, but are not limited,
to Master of Medical Sciences, Master of Public Health, Master of Biomedical Sciences, or other related major field
of study.
GS-11: Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements qualify for positions at this grade level:
A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant equivalent to the GS-09 grade level
and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program as described above;
OR
PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational
program health. Examples of related doctoral degree programs include, but are not limited to, public health; allied
health field; public health education; or other related health science.
All qualified applicants will undergo a credentialing process prior to employment with the Bureau of Prisons.
This process includes validation of medical examinations, education, internship and residency. Please submit

Evaluation of Experience: Applicants qualifying on the basis of specialized experience must have the following:
GS-07:

Ability to identify a medical problem and determine appropriate action to meet the problem, including referral
to a physician.

Knowledge and understanding of the environment, principles, ethics, and special human relationships in the
field of medicine.

Ability to work responsibly with physicians and other members of the medical team, and to deal effectively
with patients.

GS-09:

Experience performing minor surgical procedures, such as, incision and drainage, suturing of laceration, and
removal of cysts after consultation with the physician.

Experience treating chronic health problems, such as hypertension and diabetes.

Experience providing preventive care and guidance in treating a variety of common illnesses, as well as

guidance on nutrition.
GS-11:

Experience identifying medical problems and determining appropriate action to treat the problem, including
referral to a physician.

Experience performing specified diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures.

Experience providing a wide range of emergency services in the absence of the physicians, including primary

care for trauma and life-saving procedures.


Credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the current time (such

In addition to meeting the qualifications above, all applicants MUST self-certify their current ability to type at least
40 words per minute in their application. To self-certify you may enter the following statement in your application

DICTATION PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT:
You must qualify as a stenographer with dictation speed of 120 words per minute (wpm). In addition to meeting
experience requirements, applicants for these positions must show possession of the following skills, as appropriate.
Applicants may meet these requirements by passing the appropriate performance test, presenting a certificate of
proficiency from school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel
Management local office, or by self-haze their proficiency. Performance test results and certificates of proficiency
are acceptable for 3 years. Agencies may verify proficiency skills of self-certified applicants by administering the
appropriate performance test.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the
assessment questionnaire for this position:
Knowledge of administrative concepts, principles, and practices which enables the incumbent to perform
when resolving conflicts, determining new procedures, evaluating office equipment and excellent
restructuring of clerical activities in the office
Skill and experience to operate computer software applications such as Microsoft Office Word for Windows,
Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Outlook, and other web based software, etc.
Ability to plan and organize office workflow using adequate office automation procedures.
Ability to compose and review written material for compliance with rules of correspondence such as
grammar, spelling, punctuation, and ensuring accuracy and correctness.
Ability to work effectively on a team providing high quality customer service.

Skill and ability to communicate and treat (patients, visitors, and all medical center staff) customers in a
courteous, tactful and respectful manner.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work is preliminary sedentary. The work requires sitting, walking, standing,
bending, and carrying light items such as books, binders, papers, Dictaphone, and files. When required, the
employee moves to conference rooms. The employee works in an office. The work also includes the everyday risks
and discomforts typical of offices and meeting rooms.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:


Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the
position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can
perform effectively in the position;

Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position
including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;

Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position
including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and

Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the

position including all selective factors.


After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and
placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of
the appropriate quality group. Qualifying veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be
placed.
At the top of the best qualified group. The best qualified group is the first to be referred to the hiring facility for
further consideration and possible interview. The remaining groups may be based on the number of available
