Design Objectives

The following is a list of guidelines that are to be implemented within the design
concepts, allowing for the project to meet its requirements.

I. Reduced risk of spillage: The design has to ensure that it mitigates the spillage of
beverages in lecture halls.

II. Durable: The design has to be able to hold different cups of different weights
without failing due to load applied. It also has to be able to not deform easily
under varying temperatures. It also has to be durable enough for prolonged
use (up to at least a year). The clamp section of the design also has to safely
clamp the cupholder to a surface without falling for a very long period of
time. It has to be able to resist simple forces made by the user or other
people, such as a slight push of the arm.

III.

Versatile: The design has to be able to securely hold cups of various sizes. It
also has to be able to clamp on to different surfaces made of different
materials and shapes easily. The cupholder also can be personalized by the
user to suit his or her needs or aesthetic requirements for the design.

IV.

User-friendliness: The design has to be easy to use by the customer so that

it can be very accessible to a wide variety. With that in mind, the final
product must be easy to clean and not cause too many problems for the
user. It also has to be comfortable for the user to hold.

V. Cost-friendliness : The cupholder must be affordable to university students. It has

to be relatively inexpensive with regards to the target market.
Design Constraints
A set of restrictions and limitations helps to redefine the problem definition, which
further shapes the concepts that are being brainstormed.

I. Compact, lightweight, and portable: A large, heavy cupholder would be

cumbersome and be an inconvenience in terms of both usage and storage.
The entire final design should not exceed 1.5 pounds, with allowance to the
weight of the beverage.

II. Cost: the cost of the item should be at its max value: $15. This may limit the
quality of the material with regards to its cost to make.

III.

Sizing: The diameter of the cupholder should be able to hold the largest Tim
Hortons cup, while also not being too big to be portable. As such, the
diameter should be no more than 91mm. The designs height should also be
long enough so that it can contain a tall cup, while it still should be small
enough to be portable. As such, the range of the cups height should be
around 120 to 125 mm. The same thing also applies to the base of the design
so the range of the base should be around 60 to 58.5 mm.

IV.

Durability and Reliability:
