Head stops firing ink

FJ-540
SYMPTOM:
1 Head or 2 Heads does not fire ink at all.

CAUSE:
In case that 1 Head stops firing ink.
Head Driver IC and Power Transistors which drive the Head are broken.
In case that 2 Heads ( BK&CY / MG&YE / Lc&Lm ) stop firing the ink.
Fuse is broken (sometimes also Driver IC and Power Transitors are broken).
Each one Fuse is connected to each group of the head, so 1 Head group does not fire ink at all
when 1 Fuse is broken.
In most cases, only the Fuse on the Head Board is broken and then 2 Heads stop firing ink.
We are investigating the cause of the problem. We have found 2 causes so far. One is that the Flexible
Cable is not connected straight to the Head Board / Carriage Board / Head. The other is that ink is
dropped on the circuit board of the Head and it causes a short-circuit.

VERIFICATION METHOD:
1. Check the Cable Condition (bad contact / cut-line) between the Head and the Carriage Board / the
Carriage Board and the Head Board.
If the Cable has some damage on it, replace the Cable and repair the Head Board (refer to the
Repair the Head Board).
2. Check the ink on the circuit Board of the Head (where the cables are connected).
If you can see the ink stain on it, please replace the Head and repair the Head Board (refer to the
Repair the Head Board).
3. Check the Head itself by switchting the Cables of the Head to the Cables of the normal Head.
(refer to the next page)
- If the defective Head starts firing ink and normal Head stops firing the ink, the Head is not
broken, check the Head Board (refer to the Repair the Head Board).
- If the Head does not still fire ink and normal Head fires ink, the Head is broken, replace the
Head and check the Head Board (refer to the Repair the Head Board).
- If the Head and also normal Head stop firing ink, the Head is broken and it breaks the Head
Board, replace the Head and repair the Head Board (refer to the Repair the Head Board).

REPAIR the Head Board:

Measure the resistance of the correspond Fuse / Driver IC / Power Transistor.
Fuse (MMCT 3.15A) :
Measure the resistance of the Fuse. Repalce it if it is open state.
Driver IC (E09A19RA) :
Measure the resistance between the GND and the pin #18 (refer to the below figure). Normal
resistance is almost 18k ohrm. Replace it if the resistance is almost 0 ohrm or some mega ohrm.
Power Transistor (2SA1746 / 2SC4131) :
Measure the resistance between the C and the E (refer to the below figure). Normal resistance is
some mega or kilo ohrm. Replace it if the resistance is less than 5 ohrm.

Note : It is necessary to solve the cause of the broken Head Board before repair or
replace it, because it has possibility that the Head Board will be broken again.
