Sensor Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer

Description
Apple designs consumer electronics that have touched millions and changed the way people
interact with electronic devices around the world. The Sensor Calibration & Instrumentation
Group is looking for an engineer directly responsible for the design of systems which carry
out calibration and performance validation of the various motion sensors within Apples
products. This engineer works closely with the Sensing Hardware group to ensure the success
of current and future Apple products.
Job Responsibilities
Specification, development and deployment of motion sensor calibration and performance
verification stations for use during Apple new product introduction (NPI).
Responsibilities include:

Develop, optimize and debug software in C/C++/Objective-C


Specify and acquire equipment, components and tools for use in a NPI environment
Specify and validate the required fixturing for measuring and calibrating devices
Deploy calibration and performance verification stations throughout the NPI cycle
Generate reports that analyze large amounts of NPI motion sensor performance data
Debug devices from the system level down to the component level

Key Qualifications

1+ years of professional experience


Knowledge of accelerometer and gyroscope functionality and implementation
Experience programming in one or more of the following: C/C++/Objective-C

Preferred Skills

3+ years of professional experience


High volume consumer electronics manufacturing experience
Experience debugging and designing simple electrical circuitry
Experience with hardware automation and motion control
Experience with databases such as MySQL/PostgreSQL/NoSQL
Experience with plotting and processing data in Matlab/Perl/Ruby/Python
Experience data mining large data sets in Matlab/Perl/Ruby/Python
Mac OS X experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ideal Candidate
Our systems have to perform at a high level of accuracy in non-ideal factory NPI conditions.
You should be someone that is excited about:

Re-writing existing motion sensor software in order to squeeze those last optimizations
out of the software and algorithms
Working with motion sensor equipment vendors to design the perfect equipment from
scratch for calibrating and verifying the performance of Apple products
Coming up with new and optimized ways of calibrating and verifying motion sensor
performance of Apple products
Experience with hardware automation and motion control specifically for use in MEMS
sensor testing and calibration

Estimated Travel
Up to 25% international travel
Education
BSc or MSc in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)

Display Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer

Group is looking for an engineer directly responsible for the design of systems which carry
out calibration and performance validation of the display of Apples products. This engineer
works closely with the Display Design and Product Design groups to ensure the success of
current and future Apple products.
Job Responsibilities
Specification, development and deployment of display calibration and performance
verification stations for use during Apple new product introduction (NPI).
Responsibilities include:

Develop image processing algorithm for display performance evaluation


Develop, optimize and debug software in C/C++/Objective-C Specify and acquire
equipment, components and tools for use in a NPI environment (reference colorimeter,
spectrometer, etc.)
Specify and validate the required fixturing for measuring and calibrating devices
Deploy calibration and performance verification stations throughout the NPI cycle
Generate reports that analyze large amounts of NPI display performance data
Debug devices from the system level down to the component level

Key Qualifications

At least 3+ years of relevant experience


Knowledge of one or more of the following: display, optics, image processing
Familiar with automating instruments and components used in display measurements
Strong programming skills in one or more of the following: C/C++/Objective-C/Matlab

Preferred Skills

5+ years of professional experience


Experience with display calibration and characterization, and image rendering
Experience with image processing algorithms development
Familiar with automating instruments and components used in display measurements

Touch Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer


Description
Apple designs consumer electronics that have touched millions and changed the way people
interact with electronic devices around the world. Be a part of the Touch Calibration and
Instrumentation group to develop customized solutions for calibrating and measuring touch
sensors on next-generation iPhone, iPad, MacBooks, and more. The display touch calibration
& instrumentation team is responsible for designing and deploying complete solutions to
calibrate and inspect fully assembled mobile devices. We are looking for well-rounded
individuals that have backgrounds in EE, ME, and SE, to contribute in designing and
deploying complete solutions to production.
Job Responsibilities

Designing and prototyping fixtures that calibrate and measure touch sensors on displays
for high volume products such as iPhones and iPads
Implementation of algorithms to facilitate calibration of the touch sensors
Collaborate with various vendors and formulate various design specifications
Integration of various hardware and software components to generate a complete solution
for touch sensor calibration and characterization

Key Qualifications

At least 3+ years of professional experience


Direct hands-on experiences working with mobile displays with touch sensors
Strong electrical engineering background in electromagnetism, analog and mixed-signal
design, in particular in the areas of high precision low-power design and board-level
circuits
Solid understanding of signals and systems, in particular noise performances of a system
Experiences in analyzing and determining the fundamental root cause mechanisms for
various non-idealities and side-effects, and proposing mitigations
Experiences and understanding of various touch technologies and collaborate with fellow
Touch EEs to deliver state-of-the-art touch solutions
Programming skills and working knowledge of MATLAB, Objective-C/C++ and able to
work comfortably with Xcode
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and solid team player

Preferred Skills

5+ years of professional experience


Industrial experience in statistical data analysis
Proficiency in 2D and 3D field solvers such as COMSOL or similar simulation tools

Hands-on experience in design, development and launch of high volume consumer


products; direct experience with touch technology and / or flat panel display technology is
beneficial

Estimated Travel
Travel to China and USA as necessary (estimated 30% travel)
