How to disable Java Update in Windows 7

The only solution is to edit the Java Update setting in Registry Editor (regedit.exe). In
Windows XP the EnableJavaUpdate registry key was located under My
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy. Its a
REG_DWORD with 0x0000001 (1) value for enabled, and 0x0000000 (0) for disabled.
In 64-bit (x64) version of Windows 7 the EnableJavaUpdate registry key is located
under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft\Java
Update\Policy. Its a REG_DWORD with 0x0000001 (1) value for enabled, and
0x0000000 (0) for disabled.
Anyone who is running 32-bit (x86) version of Windows 7, will find the registry
setting to disable Java update at the same path as it is in Windows XP
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy.

NotifyInstall=1 (Dword)
Together, these two set it to "Notify Me: Before Installing".
"Notify Me: Before Downloading" is 1,0 instead of 0,1

Disable Control Panel with Group Policy

First type gpedit.msc into the Search box in the Start menu and hit Enter.

When Local Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to User Configuration \

Administrative Templates then select Control Panel in the left Column. In the right
column double-click on Prohibit access to the Control Panel.

l
In the next window, select Enable, click OK, then close out of Local Group Policy
Editor.

After the Control Panel is disabled, youll notice its no longer listed in the Start
Menu.

Disable Control Panel with a Registry Tweak

You can also tweak the Registry to disable Control Panel. This will work with all
versions of Windows 7, Vista, and XP. Making changes in the Registry is not
recommended for beginners and you should create a Restore Point, or backup the
Registry before making any changes.
Type regedit into the Search box in the Start menu and hit Enter.
In Registry Editor navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Policies\Explorer. Then right-click in the right pane and create a new DWORD
(32-bit) Value.
Name the value NoControlPanel. Then right-click on the new Value and click Modify

In the Value data field change the value to 1 then click OK. Close out of Registry
Editor and restart the machine to complete the process.

When you get back from reboot, youll notice Control Panel is no longer listed in the
Start menu.

Remove or Hide Control Panel Applets

Type gpedit.msc in Windows Start Menu Search Bar, hit Enter, to open the Group
Policy Editor > User Configuration. Expand Administrative Templates > Click Control
Panel > Show only specified Control Panel Applets > Properties.

A dialog box will open. Click on Enable. The Show button will come alive.

Click on Show and a new dialog box will open.

Those items which are NOT on this list WILL NOT not be displayed, IF this is enabled.
You will have to ADD the control panel applets NAME, (eg: appwiz.cpl) which you
WANT displayed in the Control Panel. But this is easier said than done, and it is rather
painstaking work, as you need to KNOW the names ! Do click and read whatever is
written in the Explain tab. This way you can choose which applets to hide or show in
the Control Panel.

To find out the Control Panel applet names, open your system32 folder and search
for *.cpl. Your results will throw up the Control Panel Items.
