MISSION STATEMENT
The Akbar Pray Foundation For Change (APFC) is a not for profit grassroots organization, dedicated to redirecting the
lives of our urban at risk youth. It has been and remains our organizations mantra that " we are the solution to our own
problems." It is our core belief that there are those within our communities, if so engaged, who can help turn the tide of
crime, delinquency and recidivism which grips the lives of so many our inner city youth.
Operating from the premise that to effectively attack or address any problem you must start at its root, we have begun a
program in some of our citys schools and group homes, where we supply speakers, mentors, CDs and written material
from the organizations founder, which cuts to the heart of the problem experienced by many of these youths. Some times
working with former gang members, inner city icons and others that have what is referred to as street cred, we have been
able to achieve remarkable results.
Expanding on our mission, we continuously recruit individuals from various work disciplines to aid in educating young
men and woman with marketable skills.
To those ends we have engaged people both inside and outside our community to come to our classes and or workshops to
share and discuss the ups and downs, ins and outs of a wide range of work disciplines and careers. Never favoring one
career path over any other, we have invited professors, urban fiction writers, successful members of the hip hop industry,
general construction contractors and a Superior Court Judge to these open discussions and Socratic Circle seminars.
Again, it is our core belief that "we are the solution, to our own problems." In closing. We invite your participation in this
noble undertaking.

IF NOT YOU, THEN WHO?

IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN?

NOT MY CHILD SYNDROME

By Marvin Ellison!

Children killing children

unfortunately, is not a new
phenomenon. However, drug
enterprise-fueling gang-related
murders continue to take a toll on the
denied potential of too many young
people. Particularly the innocent
lives that are being loss to stray
bullets!
The overwhelming majority of young
gangbangers live at home with their
mother and siblings. Mothers
universally defend their sons at all
costs, no matter how heinous the
crime they may be accused of
committing. Tragically, it's an
unending cycle of visits to the
emergency room, funeral home, or
prison, for mothers on both sides of
the gun barrel. Whether each
impacted mother gave birth to the
shooting victim or shooter -- no one's

apffc.org!

taking responsibility for the tired endgame. You know: "Not my child
syndrome. "
Absent fathers are undoubtedly the
primary culprits in this circus of
tragedies. Only a man can raise a male
child in the trials, tribulations and
experience of manhood. Strong single
mothers, same-sex female unions, etc.
carry a great deal of the absentee father's
weight, but they're not men.
In baseball, no one can steal first base to
get in the game. Providing a stable home
environment is "first base" in preparing
a child for life. Education, is the hit they
need to compete. Graduating high school
is a noteworthy homerun. Graduating
college, is certainly a grand slam!
Inner city reality demand an end to: "Not
my child syndrome." Our sons aren't
born victims and bangers, the journey

THE!URBAN!PERSPECTIVE!! !

commences once they're out of the

stroller -- if we allow the wrong
influences to filter into their developing
perception and values. No one's coming
to save us from ourselves! The
foreigners are here to make money. It's
just us! Children may not know better,
so it's on us because we do
know better.
Let's stop so many
tears. Get involved!
Think about it.
Peace!

HERE IS MY DEEPLY
APPRECIATED RESPONSE FROM
"PRESIDENT OBAMA" WHO IS
PRESENTLY SITTING IN HIS
WHITE HOUSE OFFICE:
August 1, 1012

Dear Friend:
Thank you for writing. My
Administration is working to ensure all
America s young people have
educational opportunities worthy of their
potential, and I appreciate hearing from
you.
There is no stronger foundation for
success than a great education. We must
provide our children with the world-class
schools they need to succeed and our
Nation needs to compete in the global
economy. Our classrooms should be
places of high expectations and success,
where all students receive an education
that prepares them for higher education
and high-demand careers in our fastchanging economy.
My Administration has made historic
investments to strengthen our education
system, including our Race to the Top
program the most ambitious education
reform our country has seen in
generations. Race to the Top focuses on
what is best for our students by engaging
state and local leaders and educators in
turning around our lowest performing
schools, developing and rewarding
effective teachers, adopting meaningful
assessments, and tracking the progress of
our students.

flexibility to advance educational

reforms in exchange for a commitment to
raise standards, improve accountability,
and help teachers become more effective.
The first round of States to receive
flexibility was announced in February
2012, and while they are required to
maintain a focus on underserved
students, they can now move away from
one-size-fits-all interventions and
mandates and instead do what is best for
students.
The future of America s economic
strength is determined each day in
classrooms across our Nation. To be
successful, we must cultivate a learning
environment with an effective teacher in
every classroom and an effective
principal in every school. Supporting a
strong teaching workforce and inspiring
school leadership is a top priority for my
Administration. In these challenging
financial times for State and local
budgets, we have worked to help schools
keep teachers in the classroom, preserve
or extend the regular school day and
year, and maintain important afterschool
activities. My Administration has also
put forward a robust plan to strengthen
and transform the teaching profession
through a series of investments to help
State and districts pursue bold reforms at
every stage of the profession. This

includes attracting top-tier talent and

preparing educators for success,
creating career ladders with
opportunities for advancement and
competitive compensation, evaluating
and supporting the development of
teachers and principals, and getting the
best educators into the classrooms of the
students who need them most.
Across our country, young people are
dreaming of their futures and of the
ideas that will chart the course of our
unwritten history. A world-class
education system will equip our Nation
to advance economic growth, encourage
new investment and hiring, spark
innovation, and ensure the success of
the middle class. Preparing our students
for higher education and rewarding
careers fulfills sour promise to our
Nation s young people and strengthens
America for generations to come. To
learn more about my Administration s
work, please visit
www.WhiteHouse.gov/Issues/Education
Thank you, again, for writing.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama

To comprehensively reshape our

education system and better meet state
and local needs, we also need to reform
the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) a
law that has helped advanced
accountability and expose disparities in
opportunities and outcomes, but labels
too many schools as failing and imposes
too many unworkable remedies. Because
America s students could not afford to
wait any longer for Congress to act, my
Administration launched a new FederalState partnership to provide States

Police, Immigration Agents or the FBI
We rely on the police to keep us safe and treat us all fairly, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin or
religion. This card provides tips for interacting with police and understanding your rights.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE STOPPED BY POLICE, IMMIGRATION

AGENTS OR THE FBI

IF YOU ARE CONTACTED BY THE FBI

If an FBI agent comes to your home or
workplace, you do not have to answer any
questions. Tell the agent you want to speak
to a lawyer first.
If you are asked to meet with FBI agents
for an interview, you have the right to say
you do not want to be interviewed. If you
agree to an interview, have a lawyer
present. You do not have to answer any
questions you feel uncomfortable
answering, and can say that you will only
answer questions on a specific topic.

! IF YOU ARE QUESTIONED ABOUT

YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS
You have the right to remain silent and do
not have to discuss your immigration or
citizenship status with police, immigration
agents or any other officials. You do not
have to answer questions about where you
were born, whether you are a U.S. citizen, or
how you entered the country. (Separate rules
apply at international borders and airports,
and for individuals on certain nonimmigrant
visas, including tourists and business
travelers.)
If you are not a U.S. citizen and an
immigration agent requests your
immigration papers, you must show them if
you have them with you. If you are over 18,
carry your immigration documents with you
at all times. If you do not have immigration
papers, say you want to remain silent.
Do not lie about your citizenship status or
provide fake documents.
IF THE POLICE OR IMMIGRATION
AGENTS COME TO YOUR HOME
If the police or immigration agents come to
your home, you do not have to let them in
unless they have certain kinds of warrants.
Ask the officer to slip the warrant under the
door or hold it up to the window so you can
inspect it. A search warrant allows police to
enter the address listed on the warrant, but
officers can only search the areas and for the
items listed. An arrest warrant allows police
to enter the home of the person listed on the
warrant if they believe the person is inside.
A warrant of removal/deportation (ICE
warrant) does not allow officers to enter a
home without consent.
Even if officers have a warrant, you have the
right to remain silent. If you choose to speak
to the officers, step outside and close the
door.
You have the right to a lawyer, but the
government does not have to provide one for
you. If you do not have a lawyer, ask for a
list of free or low-cost legal services.

You have the right to contact your consulate or have an officer

inform the consulate of your arrest.
Tell the ICE agent you wish to remain silent. Do not discuss your
immigration status with anyone but your lawyer.
Do not sign anything, such as a voluntary departure or stipulated
removal, without talking to a lawyer. If you sign, you may be giving
up your opportunity to try to stay in the U.S.
Remember your immigration number ("A" number) and give it to
your family. It will help family members locate you.
Keep a copy of your immigration documents with someone you trust.!

Law #1
You don't need money. Money needs you.
The overwhelming majority of people believe they need
money. However nothing could be further from the truth.
Money NEEDS YOU! Money without ideas is useless. It is
worth no more then the paper on which it is printed. The fact
that money runs to the man who takes an idea and develops it is
enough proof that money needs you and not the other way
around. That is the key: the specific development of an idea.
Rich and powerful people never worry about lack of money
because they possess a developed idea and are therefore seen as
attractive by money. Money comes running to them. It is no
different than the method women use to make themselves
attractive to the men of their choice. A woman who wants to
attract the attention of a man may get her hair and nails done;
buy a new dress; get a facial; wear perfume, etc. Once a woman
has properly prepared herself, her man will come running to her
with no further effort on her part. The problem and the reason
people remain broke is they have never properly prepared
themselves (by developing and idea) to become attractive to
money. Most people have never taken an idea, grasped it, and
thoroughly developed it. Therefore money is not attracted to
them. Remember, money needs you! When you possess this
attitude towards money and properly prepare yourself for it's
arrival, you will have what you desire.

Law#2
If you don't know money, NO money
This is called money consciousness. The only reason a
healthy, free man would choose to spend the majority of his
life working for pittance of a salary at a company, is that he
does not know how he can do better. When I say know I
mean he has never been exposed to great riches in a way that
would not allow him to settle for anything less. The only way
to know money is to consistently see money. If you cannot
physically see money or the evidence of it in your present
environment, then you must learn to visualize money (see it
with your minds eye) and the evidence of it. However most
people only know what is immediately presented to them at the
moment. They are never truly conscious of the feeling of being
exceedingly rich. As a result, they remain content to receive
what they have always received while unaware of what is
possible.
Stay tuned for part 2, which will consist of Laws 3,4,and 5.
Remember, the only thing that separates the rich from the poor
is knowledge.

Getting Billions for Working Less: A
big reason to get angry: Our country's

By Matt O'Brien
Source: Data from Richard Reeves and
Isabel Sawhill
America is the land of opportunity, just
for some more than others.
That's because, in large part, inequality
starts in the crib. Rich parents can
afford to spend more time and money
on their kids, and that gap has only
grown the past few decades. Indeed,
economists Greg Duncan and Richard
Murnane calculate that, between 1972
and 2006, high-income parents
increased their spending on
"enrichment activities" for their
children by 151 percent in inflationadjusted terms, compared to 57 percent
for low-income parents.
But, of course, it's not just a matter of
dollars and cents. It's also a matter of
letters and words. Affluent parents talk
to their kids three more hours a week
on average than poor parents, which is
critical during a child's formative early
years. That's why, as Stanford
professor Sean Reardon explains, "rich
students are increasingly entering
kindergarten much better prepared to
succeed in school than middle-class
students," and they're staying that way.
It's an educational arms race that's
leaving many kids far, far behind.
It's depressing, but not nearly so much
as this:
Even poor kids who do everything
right don't do much better than rich
kids who do everything wrong.
Advantages and disadvantages, in
other words, tend to perpetuate
themselves. You can see that in the
above chart, based on a new
paper from Richard Reeves and Isabel
Sawhill, presented at the Federal

conference, which is underway.

children's favor.

Specifically, rich high school dropouts

remain in the top about as much as poor
college grads stay stuck in the bottom
14 versus 16 percent, respectively. Not
only that, but these low-income strivers
are just as likely to end up in the bottom as
these wealthy ne'er-do-wells. Some
meritocracy.
What's going on? Well, it's all about glass
floors and glass ceilings. Rich kids who
can go work for the family business
and, in Canada at least, 70 percent of the
sons of the top 1 percent do just that or
inherit the family estate don't need a high
school diploma to get ahead. It's an
extreme example of what economists call
"opportunity hoarding." That includes
everything from legacy college admissions
to unpaid internships that let affluent
parents rig the game a little more in their

THE!URBAN!PERSPECTIVE!! !

But even if they didn't, low-income kids

would still have a hard time getting
ahead. That's, in part, because they're
targets for diploma mills that load them
up with debt, but not a lot of prospects.
And even if they do get a good degree, at
least when it comes to black families,
they're more likely to still live in
impoverished neighborhoods that keep
them disconnected from opportunities.
It's not quite a heads-I-win, tails-you-lose
game where rich kids get better

The Prince Diary:

A Novella, by FIDEL

Sow a thought, reap an act.

Sow an act, reap a habit
Sow a habit, reap a character.
Sow a character,
Reap a destiny.

TRANSFORMATION

I
was voiceless
but my body
was screaming
revolting.
Mind
drew
blank
Retreated
after the
attack.
Once friend
now foe
Role playing a pimp
and Marilyn Monroe
famously labeled a whore.
but she also said stop
likewise we were ignored
pounded for more
and more.
Victim blaming is part
of the culture game
Some just rape easy
is what disconnected
power leaders say,
those rules I refuse to obey.
The use of alcohol
stimulates
or if we were already
intimate

did not make me a willing

participant,
if you dont consider it
legitimate
youre a hypocrite.
Cannot comprehend
the mental imprisonment
constant cognitive
dissonance
that you cant even
begin to articulate
Staying vigilant
feeling impotent
nightmare reruns
of the incident.
Robbed of my innocence
Know
I am one of millions
Happening every 2 minutes
facts
you cant refute.
I was voiceless
but now
boisterous
Born again from
suffering.
wounds
will
heal,
my dignity
you cannot steal.
Initiating a change
so no one ever
lays down
broken
from pain.
Love in every
action
prevents
traumatic reactions.

Statistics says were not suppose to make it.

The law says I'm a give you so much time that the
only example you could give to your kids would be to
be your replacement.
Poverty says I was made to keep you in your place
thats why I was created with the hands of hatred, why
you think its so easy for your right hand to become a
hater!.
The streets says keep it real, don't snitch!, life's a
bit*@, its bitter sweet stay strong and don't be scared
to taste her.
The gang says ride and throw you set up high and
never turn your back on your nation.
The slave master "use" to say NIGGER, we say
NIGGA, leaving every body else confused on how the
fu*k we could use the vernacular of a racist!.
The struggle said ain't nothing new under the sun the
concept of hard times is so old its ancient.
Most say we going to die anyway so they don't want
to be bothered.
The rich class looks at the poor class and says you are
my foot stool for I am the power!
The middle class wishing to be the rich class looks at
the poor class too and says I'm smarter and y'all
cowards.
DAMN!
That's why some say the world is so sour.
But with all that said, while wearing all this red! No
matter what else is said! I say in the midst of all this
we still produced remnant elite called the MEN OF
HONOR!!!
We defy statistics and dear to go harder!
We go against the odds with blood in our eyes, 5 a
ride against the tide but with a different demise then
them 300 Spartans!!
Because whatever is said, you know whatever they
say, instead of play, we ponder.
For action there is a re-action, so all our actions to
their reactions has to produce the word that will be
put on our graves, that will say, that they!, yup they!,
were MEN OF HONOR!!!.
"F" what they say, know who you are and conduct
yourself in that way, know they self! WE MEN OF
HONOR!

While day lying in ya face

My Neighborhood
In my neighborhood you hear nothing but the sound of needles
sucking, guns busting & drug dealers clutching.....
You hear my principal saying stop the violence, s
top the shooting then you get a phone call saying brah they just
killed your cousin,
as you sit there to take it all in you catch a feeling like they just
killed your best friend.....
then you think to your self time to make this flip,
time to bring this money in,
as you live in your life of sin like it's a brand new trend ......
as I sit back & think about my neighborhood
I think if we change the term neighborhood our youth would
think less of the hood & more about the neighbors in it ...
then they just might see no more that die,
hear no more that cry
& no more of hearing black mothers sigh....
