INDIAN CASHEW INDUSTRY

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.), a

native of Eastern Brazil, was introduced to
India by the Portuguese nearly five
centuries ago. In India, cashew was first
introduced in Goa from where it spread to
other parts of the country. In the
beginning it was mainly used for soil
binding to check erosion. Commercial
cultivation began in the early 1960s
and, over the years, cashew has become a
crop of high economy and attained the
status of an export-oriented commodity,
earning considerable foreign exchange
for the country.

Indian cashew processors follow manual/semimechanised processing techniques.
The use of manual processing techniques leads
to only 20 per cent broken nuts, as compared to about
50 per cent broken nuts by deploying mechanised
processing techniques.
Further, as India has highly-skilled labour, deployment
of manual processing techniques is feasible.
There is considerable investment in research and
development and agricultural extension.
India's favourable social banking norms have led
to a strong financial infrastructure in the industry
and, thus, credit is available through commercial
and co-operative banks.
Emphasis is laid on the production of new varieties,
better planting techniques and improved
packaging methods.
