CHRISTMAS PLAY

SCENE 1
NARRATOR: Long ago in a small village called Galilee there lived a young beautiful maiden called Mary
who was betrothed to a carpenter named Joseph. One day while doing her household chores an angel
named Gabriel appeared before Mary.
ANGEL GABRIEL: Greetings to you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with thee!
NARRATOR: Mary noticing the divine presence before her became afraid.
(Mary drops to her knees and shields her eyes.)
MARY: Who is you? Wha you want?
ANGEL GABRIEL: Do not be afraid Mary, for I have come with great news. You would soon be with child
and you are to call him Jesus.
(Surprised Mary bolts upward, eyes still averted.)
MARY: Wha? Da cyah be true? How cud I hav a chile an I aint even bin with ah man yet?
ANGEL GABRIEL: The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow
you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
(Mary bows her head.)
MARY: I is ah servant of the Lord. It go be as u say.
(The Angel exits and Mary is left alone on stage. She wrings her hands nervously and addresses the
audience.)
MARY: Oh Gosh. Ah wanda wa ah go tell Joseph. He go think I improper. (Lifts her face skywards.) Lord
giv meh strength.

Scene 2
NARRATOR: And those were the days of Caesar Augustus who issued a census that everyone should
return to their hometown to pay taxes. Joseph was from the House of David in Bethlehem so he and
Mary saddled up and rode to Josephs city. On their arrival they went in search of an inn to rest.
(Josephs knocks on the first door and innkeeper appears)
JOSEPH: By chance allyuh have any room? Meh wife pregnant and she need tuh res
1st INNKEEPER: Sorry ah cyah help ya. No room.
(Innkeeper shuts the door)
NARRATOR: They knocked on every door but no one had room to spare. Soon they came upon the last
door and with a heavy heart Joseph knocked.
2ND INNKEEPER: Ah rel sorry but we hav no room but ah do hav ah stable. You and yuh wife cud res dey.
JOSEPH: Tha go be fine. Meh wife needs tuh res
(Joseph and Mary follow the innkeeper to his stable.)
NARRATOR: Soon it came time for Mary to give birth. And so twas a stable where Jesus the Son of God
was delivered unto this earth by the Virgin Mary.

SCENE 3
NARRATOR: Meanwhile some shepherds were watching their flock when Angel Gabriel appeared
accompanied by a host of angels.
(Shepherds fall to the ground in fear.)
ANGEL GABRIEL: Fear not for Ive come with news of great joy. Today in the city of David the Saviour is
born who is Christ the Lord. Go forth to Bethlehem and thou shalt find a child wrapped in swaddling
cloths lying in a manger.
NARRATOR: With great urgency and excitement the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and came upon
the sleeping babe in the manger.
1ST SHEPHERD: Behold d son ah God!
2ND SHEPHERD: D Messiah com!
3RD SHEPHERD: Praise God fuh we Saviour born!
(The shepherds all kneel before the child with bent heads)

SCENE 4
NARRATOR: Now following the birth of Jesus a bright star appeared in the sky. Three wise men saw this
and knew that a king had been born. So the wise men followed the star and came upon the stable where
the Messiah lay.
1ST WISE MEN: Weve come to greet and present gifts to the new King.
MARY: Com in! Com in! Come greet meh chile!
(One by one the wise men entered end presented the gifts to the baby)
1ST WISE MEN: I give the gift of Gold.
2ND WISE MEN: I give the gift of frankincense.
3RD WISE MEN: I give the gift of myrrh.
JOSEPH: Thank ya! Dis chile is ah blessin tuh all men.
NARRATOR: And so the Messiah was born in the town of Bethlehem, wrapped in swaddling cloths and
laid to rest in a manger.
(Angels enter and stand with everyone.)
EVERYONE: Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth and goodwill towards men.
