4)
After working, restore the equipment according to the above mentioned contents of memory if
necessary.
5)
2-9
After completion of work, put back the peripheral devices to the original condition.
DANGER
The electric charge has remained in CRT after the power switch is turned
off. Because the high voltage is usually used for CRT. So make the
electric charge escape with a grounding stick which is connected to the
ground of the chassis and through the resistance for high voltage (Approx.
1M) before removing the anode cap.
Some electric charge remain in CRT after escaping with a grounding
stick. Do not touch the metallic part of the anode cap with bare hands,
when detaching the anode cap directly.
2) CRT with the deflecting yoke is already adjusted to the best condition. Do not touch the
deflecting yoke and the magnet of the neck part.
3) Be sure to detach the metallic goods such as a wrist watch from your body before doing the
repair work.
To prevent the secondary damage and the electrical shock, the matters above should be taken
into careful consideration.
2 - 3
MN2-0218
SECTION 2 PRECAUTIONS
2-10
[REMARKS] PCB does not need repairing or modifying in the field as a rule.
1)
2)
3)
4)
Peeling of patterns (especially those for mounting the parts) together with chip devices since
those patterns are rather fragile compared with PCBs used before now, and
5)
Damage to parts on the reverse side in the case of PCBs of both-side mounting type.
Also, a PCB mounted improperly or a warped PCB mounted as it is may cause the chip devices to
come off and the fine patterns to be cut.
Additionally, reuse of chip devices (including resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc.) is strictly
inhibited because of the following reason: Since the chip devices are lacking in lead wires, such
as those found in the traditional component parts, heat given to the PCB will be directly conducted
to the inside of chip devices. As a result, a thermal stress will occur due to a difference in thermal
expansion coefficient between each chip device and PCB, giving rise of the possibility of cracks
inside of or on the surface of chip devices or the possibility of thermal breaking (internal burning).
Very thin wiring patterns require extreme care in handling of the PCB
Be sure to observe the precautions mentioned above also to prevent the secondary accidents.

SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
The transmission pulses are converted to high-voltage in the driver circuit that drives the
oscillator and are then supplied to the selected probe.
The transmission voltage is detected by the transmission power supply voltage monitoring
circuit on the TX / PRE AMP board and this data is sent to the system control unit. The
system control unit immediately stops transmission if it receives abnormal transmission
power supply data.
The electronic scanning probe has a maximum of 128 Tx/Rx lines, allowing it to
simultaneously drive up to 32 transducers. Up to 32 of the 128 Tx/Rx lines can be selected
by the selector circuit, which comprises 16 HVSs (8-channel High Voltage Analog
Switches).
The received echoes are received by the transducers that transmitted and are amplified in
the pre-amp circuit. The received echoes are analog processed after received dynamic
focusing, then A/D converted and transferred to the DIU.
With an electronic probe, phase compensation is conducted in the matrix switch and delay
line because the phases of the echoes received by the multiple transducers are displaced
from each other.

The ultrasound image data received from the Tx/Rx unit as a digital signal is sent
for pre-processing. Pre-processing involves input selection of the ultrasound image data
sent from the Tx/Rx unit, frame correlation, and storing in frame memory.
Post-processing involves the interpolation and correlation of the B-mode image in the TV
horizontal scan direction, addition of gray-scale bar, characters and graphics, and output to
the D/A conversion circuit.
After D/A conversion, TV synchronization and blank signals are added and the signal is
output as a composite video signal.

4-5-6. DIU
The B/W DIU (Digital Imaging Unit) fetches ultrasound wave digital data coming from
the GEU in synchronized with the DIU clock, writing ultrasound wave data to the display
memory in XY writing method, then reading out the ultrasound wave data in synchronized
with the TV signal. After this, gradation conversion of display data, addition of gray scale
bar and other post processing are executed by this block.
In the writing system, ultrasound wave scanning data are thought of as scanning line
vectors, and from the starting point indicated by the vector (X0, Y0) and the time it takes to
pass the boundary (X), (Y), one scanning line can freely be written to main memory.
Also, through the dynamic focus area signal (DFAREA), multi-level dynamic focused
ultrasound wave data can be written to memory.
The boundary passing signal (INCX, INCY) is detected by the XY Boundary Calculator
from the boundary passing time (X), (Y) in 1 pixel units. If the boundary passing signal is
detected, data are written to the line buffer the following system is used to determine if the
signal is INCX or INCY by the scanning address and register setting.
(a) XY Sampling Writing System (X and Y System)
In this system, writing to the line buffer is done each time either INCX or INCY is
generated. This system is used for all scanning lines.
(b) X Sampling, Y Sampling Writing System (X or Y System)
In this write system, the line buffer write area (X system) is set when INCX is
generated and the line buffer write area (Y system) is set when INCY is generated.
Data are written to the area specified in the X system each time INCX is generated,
while writing is not performed when INCY is generated. INCY information is held until
INCX is generated, then writing of both is done simultaneously. For this reason, the
number of times INCY is generated must be fewer than the times INCX is generated.
Accordingly, the area which can be specified in the X system is limited to 45 or more left
and right. In the same way, the area which can be specified in the Y system is limited to
45 or less left and right.
Also, the area setting is stored in X0 and Y0 (16-bit) in the parameter table.
The boundary pass signal (INCX, INCY) is written to the line buffer simultaneously
with the ultrasound wave data, and is used to increment the main memory write address.
PRE PROCESS
This block is a circuit that executes various types of processing of ultrasound image
data sent and received at the GEU for writing to MEMORY.
Test Pattern Generation
Generates the various types of test pattern.

MN2-0218
SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
Echo Erase
In order to make physiological signals easy to see, the bottom portion of ultrasound
M image data is erased. The erased portion of ultrasound image data is written to
image memory as "0" level. This differs from USERASE and ERASE in the point
that it is executed when ultrasound image data are stored in image memory.
Memory Erase
In order not to display unnecessary data when changing modes, etc., either a portion
or all of the image memory is erased. The erased portion of ultrasound image data is
written to image memory as "0" level.
Except in the point that Erase is executed in screen units, which image memory is
configured into, this function is the same as Echo Erase.
Black and White Frame Correlation
Correlation between two frames is executed in order to reduce noise.
CPU Access
When making a histogram, etc. of ultrasound image data, the CPU can access image
memory. Access by the CPU is limited to times when the ultrasound image is
frozen.
MEMORY
This block is capable of storing enough ultrasound image data for two screens after
they have been processed by the pre process block.
Scanning conversion in the DIU is executed during writing to or reading from this
block.
Main memory is used as M image display memory during real operation and as frame
memory for frame correlation. During B image display and when the image is frozen,
CINE memory is used as display memory.
Memory Configuration
2 x 2 pixels is the smallest configuration element and 2 screens of 512 x 512 pixel
x 8 bit ultrasound image data are stored.
Black and White Main Memory
bits 0-5
bit 6
bit 7
Write/Read Speed
Writing to or reading from RAM is carried out by RMW at 320 nsec/1 pixel.
However, by shifting the access cycle one half period, apparently, RMW is done at
160 nsec/1 pixel. On the other hand, reading from the SAM block is by serial Read
at 160 nsec/1 pixel. By doing 2 pixels simultaneously, apparently, serial read can be
done at 80 nsec/1 pixel.
Erase
Using the Dual-port RAM flash write function, the image memory can be erased.
4 - 41
MN2-0218
SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
Erasing is executed by flash write at 160 nsec/1 Row, but when 4 chips are working
simultaneously, erasing can be done at high speed, with one 512 x 512 pixel screen
erased in approx. 45 sec. Furthermore, since it is not dependent on ultrasound
image data write operations, it differs from USERASE, ECHO ERASE and Memory
Erase.
POST PROCESS
This block carries out various types of processing of ultrasound image data read from
image memory.
H Interpolation
Spaces between lines of ultrasound B image data are interpolated in the TV H
direction. The area which can be interpolated is from 1-11 pixels, and selection of
the number of pixels to be interpolated is set by the register.
Ordinarily, the linear interpolation method is used. For black and white and
dispersion, linear interpolation is used.
Also, since the display area of ultrasound B image data is dependent on the
display format, it is controlled by TV synchronized signals.
Furthermore, ultrasound M image data do not pass through this processing
system.
H Correlation
In order to show connection of ultrasound image data in the TV H direction
smoothly, the arithmetic sum is taken between pixels in the TV H direction. The
system is equipped with independent correlation circuits for ultrasound B image data
and for M image data, with selection of whether these circuits are switched ON or
OFF being set by the register. Also, since the display area of ultrasound image data
is dependent on the display format, it is controlled by TV synchronization signals.
Gray Scale Bar Generation
A gray scale bar with 64 gradations ranging from the white level to the black level is
generated in the TV V direction. The display width of each gradation is fixed at 16 pixels
x 2 lines. Also, the display position is dependent on the display format, so it is controlled
by TV synchronization signals.
View
Gamma correction is carried out in accordance with the imaging device's
brightness characteristics. The following three types of gamma curve can be
selected.
(1)

MN2-0218
SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
This function makes the B image display area narrow and increases the
frame rate. This is accomplished by varying BOF/, EOF/ and DSCADRS (8:0)
in the GEU. Data from BOF/ to EOF/ are written as DIU.
Freeze Function
This function stops the writing of an image to display memory.
Freeze is executed by setting the register. In the case of freezing of a real
display simultaneous with B/M, it is necessary to set the Freeze Register in
advance.
Forced Freeze, where writing to memory is forcibly stopped, and
synchronous freeze mode, which is synchronized with the ultrasound write
image, are also provided.
B image synchronous freeze stops motion after one frame of B image data
has been written. Ordinarily, the sweep image in the B/M sweep motion mode
is frozen as a B image. Also, synchronous freeze which is independent of B
and sweep can be set. Sweep image synchronous freeze stops motion after
writing of one line of sweep image data is written. When in the B Mode, the
image is frozen after writing of the B image is completed.
When in the Sweep Mode, the image is frozen when writing of a sweep
image line is completed.
When in the B/M Sweep Mode, B is frozen after writing of one frame, and
the M sweep image is frozen after freezing of B is completed.
WRITE CONTROL
This block is configured from a block which generates write control signals and
addresses when image data read from the line buffer is written to display memory and
which controls erasing of display memory.
Image data (8-bit) read from the line buffer contain pixel border passing signals (INCX,
INCY) in the X and Y directions. Write addresses are generated by operating the address
counter for each direction by means of this signal. Setting of this address counter's initial
value and controlling the up-down count makes it possible to control the image direction.
Line Buffer Interface Function
This function returns a Write End signal for handshaking in response to
memory write request signals from the line buffer.
Write Control Signal Generator Function
This function generates a write memory cycle (Read Modify Write) which
writes ultrasound data sent from the line buffer to memory. There are two
systems which generate this cycle, making it possible to repeat writing of the
next requested pixels in a 160 nsec. cycle. This is accomplished by
overlapping the 320 nsec. cycle of the two Read Modify Write systems by half.
Off Screen Function
The write address in both the X and Y directions is 12 bits, and a virtual
4 - 44
MN2-0218
SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
image can be developed in a 4096 x 4096 area, but in reality, the memory area
where ultrasound data can be written is only 512 x 512 in size. Therefore, the
virtual write area is regarded as off screen area and the writing operation is not
performed. However, since the virtual write area also operates the address
counter, the XY Boundary Calculator's INCX and INCY are used as is in the off
screen area. After entering the memory area (on screen area), fetching from
line buffer memory begins and writing to actual memory is done, and INCX and
INCY, which are added to the memory write data, operate the write address
counter.
DISPLAY CONTROL
This block reads image data written in main memory in synch with the TV signal and
carries out TV display.
Since main memory uses dual port memory, writing to RAM and reading from SAM is
done asynchronously. Therefore, TV display of image data can be done according to the
predetermined display format, reading of the contents of the SAM block can be executed
and can be displayed by Serial Reading.
Display Mode (One Screen Display Function, Complex Display Function)
The following display controls can be performed.
1B
2B
Wide 2B
1M
Left-Right B/M
Wide Left-Right B/M
In the case of one screen display, in accordance with the display address determined
by the display mode, transfer to the SAM block of memory is executed before TV
4 - 45
MN2-0218
SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
display begins, then in accordance with the display area signal, reading of display data
from the SAM block is carried out.
In the case of complex display, in order to display Left-Right 2 screen main
memory according to the display format, while TV display of screen 1 is being carried
out, data for display of screen 2 are being transferred to the SAM block (Real Time
Read Transfer) to carry out complex display.
TIMING GENERATOR
This block generates synchronization signals for TV, TV display area signals, memory
read control signals, latch signals for fetching data from PARAMETER ROM under
GEU I.T. F and WRITE CONTROL, and PARAMETER ROM address signals.
D/A CONVERSION
This is for operating conversion again for digitally processed 8-bit image data and
outputting TV Composite Video signals.
OPTION DETECTOR
This is to detect the attachment of optional unit (Mechanical probe scanning unit) and
send data to CPU
4 - 46
MN2-0218
SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
CLOCK GENERATOR
The reference clock generated by the crystal oscillator is divided and 25 MHz, 12 MHz
and 6 MHz synchronization clocks are generated. An A/D conversion clock is also
generated as a countermeasure for jitter during A/D conversion.
Jitter during A/D conversion occurs because the operating frequencies of the GEU and
DIU are not synchronized. The A/D conversion fetch clock synchronized with the GEU
(synchronized with the USBLK_ signal) is created from 50 MHz on the DIU side,
resulting in a reduction of jitter. Accordingly, it is possible to settle the deviation by the
asynchronous portion with the deviation of 1 pulse in 50 MHz. Also, the same kind of
situation occurs when fetching VTR data, so a synchronized clock is generated in HD/.

SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
A/D conversion
The signals sent from the unit are ECG signals, ECG signals plus offset, and PCG
signals plus offset. These signals and divided into plane mode display data and
sweep mode display data. Offset is not added to the plane mode display.
The
signals with offset are used in the sweep mode display. The unit receives the data
with offset and raw data. The data is converted (A/D conversion) separately for
display in each mode.
The sampling
Scroll display
The board only supports the scroll display.
Write control
The memory can handle data for two (display) screens and eight (store) screens.
Memory is managed by screens so that more data can be stored. The CINE
managers control the write memory.
4 - 76
MN2-0218
SECTION 4 Principle of System Operation
Display mode
By setting the reading memory, data can be displayed randomly. The left and
right channels can also be displayed. The memory can also handle a 2B display
request.
The horizontal display position is fixed but the vertical display position
screen number (of the real display) and the display address, and sets the stored
screen to display. The CINE memory manager controls the screens in a store
operation.
Erase
This function erases one line (512 pixels) of line memory. The function can erase
data by units of screens. This cycle is also executed during display blanking
(same as a memory write). One screen is erased in 41us.
Signal interpolation
The board has an interpolate circuit to display the easy-to-look waveforms on TV.
The data is sampled by the sweep image write rate, but the PCG waveforms have
high-reflected frequencies and the waveform regeneration capability is decreased.
As for the PCG signals, the highest and lowest values during the sampling period
are erased to improve the waveform regeneration. Interpolation is done to the data
read from the memory.

SECTION 6 TROUBLESHOOTING
6-1
Introduction
This trouble shooting makes integral part of the Service Manual. And it has been prepared for
the persistent purpose of providing for repairing guidelines.
What has been described herein, moreover, is subject to the prerequisite for a repair to be made
by replacing a PCB.
6-2
Precautions
To prevent a new problem (secondary disaster) from taking place in the process of trouble
shooting as described herein, every engineer concerned should duly take the following precautions:
1)
Never remove any part from the electric system, including PCB, probe, cable, etc., before
powering off the equipment.
2)
3)
4)
To ground a measuring instrument probe or the like, it is naturally necessary to know where a
signal to determine is grounded. Before using the instrument, moreover, make certain for
which the grounding terminal is intended, analog, digital, alternating current, direct current,
high voltage or low voltage.
CAUTION Failure to ground properly might result in an incapability of
observing an accurate voltage or waveform or in a probability of
burning out the measuring instrument or ultrasound diagnostic
equipment or both.
5)
Do not fit a measuring instrument probe or the like to a measuring point before turning off
the ultrasound diagnostic equipment.
CAUTIONTo determine an especially high voltage, it might rupture a circuit in
the ultrasound diagnostic equipment. Besides, it might endanger a
engineer or engineers concerned.

SECTION 6 TROUBLESHOOTING
6)
To replace or repair a PCB, make certain of its compatibility, etc, in accordance with the
"History of SSD-1000".
If a wrong ROM should be mounted on a PCB, employ the ROM originally employed in the
user's equipment or select an appropriate one in accordance with the History.
CAUTION If an incompatible PCB should be inserted into the equipment, there are
possibilities that the equipment may be burnt out. If such
incompatible PCB should remain inserted in the equipment after
completion of a repair, moreover, it should be fully noted that another
problem may take place newly.
7)
Without definitively knowing that failure has taken place, do not unnecessarily change any controls
and/or switches on a PCB from their original settings.
To determine whether or not a problem is the failure, see Section 8 "Performance Check."
If a readjustment is required, see Section 7"Adjustment Procedure."
CAUTION An unnecessary change of controls' or switches' settings might bring
about a new problem, probably making the equipment unrepairable.
8)
While you are shooting trouble in accordance with the present procedure, it may be necessary
to consult with Technical Support. In such a case, provide at least the following information:

CAUTION Resetting the backup memory will erase presettings, hospital name and so
on.
To set them all over again after resetting the memory, it is necessary to
record the set information by the use of a printer, such as "Echo Copier"
or the like, or to copy the set information in the "PRESET DATA
SHEET" described in 6-4-11.
Do not use customers printer, meanwhile, before obtaining consent to do
so.
1)
When the software has been altered for an upgrade or for any other reason,
2)
3)
When the system fails to start up even if the equipment is powered on.
Under such a circumstance, resetting the backup memory is a mere provisional action
consistently. To make a substantial repair, refer to 6-4-9 and 10. In such a situation,
moreover, it is impossible to store the set information, such as presettings, etc.
WARNING Never use the RAM resetting method effective on our conventional
equipment. In other words, never short circuit the RAM power supply
pin with the grounding pin to reset the backup RAM. If so, the backup
battery will break down.

(1) First, check the output voltage from the power supply unit.
Whole of system is controlled by MPUs (Micro Processing Unit), If these MPUs
should not be supplied with +5V power from the power supply unit or should have
an abnormal voltage, it will bring about a problem affecting the entirety of the
system.
Even if the power supply unit has a normal output, cabling may be disconnected on
the way or a problem may have taken place in distributing the power in PCB to be
powered.
The EP399000/EP43050* CPU board is equiped with a CPU.

Probe
Confirmation by Use of Another Probe or Unit.
Make a checkout of performance, using a probe of the same model number as that in which the
failure has taken place, if possible. To check from performance, moreover, connect the
apparently failed probe with a system of identical type available as a substitute, if any.
Coin Check (refer to the SECTION 8 PERFORMANCECHECK)
Set the system in B mode and slowly move a fine metal bar, such as a resistor lead or the like,
from end to end while fitting it to the probe lightly on the surface. Then, observe the ultrasound
image on the screen. There are possibilities that the probe may have ailed if the problem should
fall in any of the following cases while moving the metal bar:
[Faulty state]
If any of the following matters is found while the metal bar is moved, the
probe is suspected to be faulty:

If the faulty symptom is peculiar to that monitor and if it is impossible to replace the monitor,
repair it according to SECTION 5 SCHEMATICS.
Check the following items
(1) Check the contrast and brightness potentiometers for proper setting.
(2) Check whether normally images are printed out by video printer or not.
Printed image is normal.Proceed to (3).
Printed image is also abnormal.Refer to C6.
(3) Referring A3, Check the voltage supplied for TV monitor.
NormalIf there is no trouble in C6, TV monitor has trouble.
AbnormalPower supply unit is trouble.
(4) When you connect a external monitor with Composite output, check whether normally

Image on external monitor is normal.Proceed to (3).
Image on external monitor is also abnormal.Refer to C6.
REFERENCE An impression of an ultrasound image depends largely on setting of contrast
and brightness. Users complaints about insufficient sensitiveness or
resolving power may be sometimes solved by adjustments of contrast and
brightness potentiometers.
Remember the fact that excessively high setting of those potentiometers
would cause characters and graphics to flicker.

SECTION 7 ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
7-1
Introduction
The adjustment points shown in this adjustment procedure are points where the actual ultrasound
image is directly adjusted.
7-2
Attention
In order to avoid some new trouble created by this adjustment procedure manual, the person
performing this adjustment should be restricted to someone who has undergone the Aloka approved
training course and who has a high level of technical expertise and knowledge.
Also, by all means investigate beforehand whether the trouble you are attempting to solve by
adjustment is caused by faulty adjustment or by the failure of one of the circuits. Since
indiscriminate readjustments can be a hindrance to restoring the equipments original performance,
please exercise great caution in performing adjustments.
Begin the operation only after switching on the power and letting it warm up sufficiently.(30
minutes or more have passed after throwing the power switch ON.)
2)
When adjusting variable resistors, do not exert greater force on the PCB than necessary.
3)
Some of the variable resistors used in S.M.T. (Surface Mount Technology) may be smaller in size
than those used in the past. When adjusting these devices, be sure to use a driver that is
appropriate for each specific variable resistor.
4)
Do not touch any variable resistor or any variable coil, etc. which is not specifically indicated in
these procedures. There is danger of altering the circuit to the point where restoration of function
will become impossible.

SOUND
Changes (ON/OFF) the sync beep tone for ECG sync.
ECG SYNC
When ECG wave rises, SYNC mark is displayed. B mode image must change itself in
synchronization with SYNC. And SYNC mark is moved by ,switches.
8)
B MODE
The transducer in the mechanical sector probe symmetrically moves left and right.
The image is not inclined.
The images are free of unnecessary display, noises and similar abnormality.
DEPTH/RANGE
Scaling up/down of the images in each mode.
Change the range. Then, the image must be erased once.
LINE DENSITY
Change MS LINE DENSITY (in MENU) from LOW to HIGH. Then, the movement of
a mechanical sector becomes slow and the image becomes fine.
2)
3)
SCAN AREA is returned to the center of the screen by pushing MARK REF
switch.
4)
The frequency of the probe can be changed 5MHz (7.5MHz) to 7.5MHz (5MHz)
by ELEMENT SELECT switch and it is displayed properly.
EXTERNAL INPUTREPLAY
The image from VCR can be replayed on the monitor by EXT (Function) switch.
And the image is displayed properly without the lag of the synchronization.
