Making Measurements Using Gravity- Lab report

Introduction:
Gravity is the force that attracts an object or a body towards the center of
the earth, or towards any other physical body having mass. The objective of this
lab is to measure the height of the clock tower, from the ground to the second
balcony using two different methods.

Materials:

Stop watch

Ruler

Pencil

Stone

Black iPhone cover

Purple iPhone cover

Shoes

Notebook

Pen

Outline of method 1:
For the first method, our team decided to measure the length of one block
and then count the number of blocks up until the second balcony of the clock
tower, in order to find the height of the clock tower and the distance between the
ground and the second balcony.
Outline of method 2:

Due the rules of the experiment, only one of our teammates went up the
second balcony of the clock tower. After the countdown, they would drop and
object from the second balcony to the ground and the people who werent on the
balcony would record the time and write it down on their papers. Then they
would take the average of the time. Next, we used the formula delta X=
ViT+1/2(a)(t)2 to calculate the distance between the ground and the second
balcony.
Procedure:
Method 1:
1. Place the long ruler on the block, then measure and record the length of
the block.
2. Count the number of blocks, and record the number.
3. Multiply the number of blocks to the length of one block to get the total
length in centimeters.
4. Divide results by 100, so the people carrying out the experiment can be
able to compare the first method to the second one.
Method 2:
1. Collect the objects that the group wants to drop from the balcony.
2. Only ONE person should climb the stairs and stand in the balcony to drop
the objects.
3. Set the stopwatch
4. Countdown, so when the person who is counting down reaches one the
person in the clock tower should drop the object.
5. Record the time on your notebook.
6. Calculate the average of the time, and record the results.

Data:
Method 1:
Length of one block: 85cm
Number of blocks: 33
Method 2:

Object

Time

Purple cover

2.53 seconds

Pencil

2.7 seconds

Shoes

2.6 seconds

Black cover

2.47 seconds

Stone

1.8 seconds

Average:

2.42 seconds

Results:
Method 1: 33 x 85= 2805cm
2805/100= 28.05
Method 2:
Given:

T= 2.42 seconds

a= -9.8 m/s2 (Going in the opposite direction)

Vi= 0 m/s

X=(0)(2.42)+1/2(-9.8)(2.42)2= 28.7

Conclusion:
The results are not the same, however they are close. In conclusion, the methods
used were precise but not accurate because the answers were not the same.
However, we know that the accurate answer is within the range that our team
found.
