Course Description
This course center on the basic concepts
of Mental Hygiene, personality
development and its dynamics,
psychological and behavioral disorders as
well as prevention and therapeutic
interventions

GC 504 MENTAL HYGIENE


Goals
To gain insights on the different concepts of
mental hygiene and become aware of the
different psychological and behavioral
disorders. It is also expected that they will
acquire the skills in prevention and
interventions, through collaborative and
cooperative participation like oral
presentations, socialized and panel
discussions.

Prelim Period
Basic concepts of Mental Hygiene and
Personality Dynamics
Midterm Period
Different maladjustments and disorders
Final Period will be the practice of
Prevention and Therapeutic Measures

Mental Hygiene
It is a science, which deals with the
adoption and application of a set of
hygienic principles, directed toward
prevention of serious maladjustment, and
the maintenance and promotion of sound
mental health (Gaerlan et. al., 1998)

Mental Health
is not just the absence of mental disorder.
It is defined as a state of well-being in
which every individual realizes his or her
own potential, can cope with the normal
stresses of life, can work productively and
fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution
to her or his community (WHO, 2007)

Mental Disorder

is a syndrome characterized by clinically


significant disturbance in an individuals
cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior
that reflects a dysfunction in the
psychological, biological, or developmental
processes underlying mental functioning.
Mental disorders are usually associated
with significant distress or disability in
social, occupational, or other important
activities

Mental Disorder
An expectable or culturally approved
response to a common stressor or loss
such as death of loved one, is not a
mental disorder

1. Connect with others. Develop and
maintain strong relationships with people

well these help maintain a healthy
body. Physical and mental health are
closely linked

take on a challenge to meet a goal.

7. Deal with stress. Be aware of what
triggers your stress and how you react.
8. Rest and refresh. Get plenty of sleep.
Go to bed at a regular time each day and
practice good habits to get better sleep.

moment to notice each of your senses
each day.

10. Ask for help. This can be as simple as
asking a friend to babysit while you have
some time out or speaking to your doctor
(GP) about where to find a counsellor or
community mental health service.

National Center for Mental Health


is dedicated to delivering preventive,
curative and rehabilitative mental health
care services.
NCMH was established in 1925 through
Public Works Act 3258. It was formally
opened on December 17, 1928 and was
originally called the INSULAR
PSYCHOPATIC HOSPITAL.

National Center for Mental Health


It was later called the National Mental
Hospital. On November 12, 1986, it was
renamed NATIONAL CENTER FOR
MENTAL HEALTH (NCMH) through
Memorandum Circular No. 48 issued by
the Office of the President.
