The RENESIS rotary engine: smooth, high-revving power delivering pure driving
excitement right up to the rev counter’s red line. It’s the result of Mazda’s long
history of rotary engine development. As the world’s only mass-manufacturer of
rotary engines, Mazda has innovated a host of performance-enhancing
technologies which reach full fruition with RENESIS, making it the heart of Mazda
RX-8’s uniquely soul-stirring drive. An experience like none you’ve ever had before.

Innovative engineering for enhanced performance

It starts with the side exhaust port system. Locating the exhaust ports in the
engine’s side housing along with the intake ports eliminates intake/exhaust port
timing overlap. And this combines with other refinements such as enlarged intake
and exhaust port area to give you both higher power and improved fuel efficiency.

Powerful, linear response for ultimate driving pleasure

Enjoy instant, powerful response under any driving circumstances thanks to a
torque curve that is extremely flat across the engine’s entire speed range. The
secret is the Sequential Dynamic Air Intake System (S-DAIS) that continuously
optimizes charging efficiency according to engine speed. Together with the
lightweight rotors and flywheel, electronic throttle and a host of other engineering
advances, this lets RENESIS bring you the sports performance you want along
with the instant response only a naturally-aspirated engine can deliver.
And to assure the lubrication performance hardcore sports driving demands, the

Mazda RX-8 responds to your every wish, almost before you think of it. And key to this
exhilarating response is a drivetrain layout with near-perfect 50:50 front/rear weight
distribution and a low centre of gravity, achieved by mounting the RENESIS engine
low, behind the front axle in an advanced front midship configuration. Placing all the
weight between the wheels results in superior cornering with extremely sensitive,
linear response to driver inputs. In addition, the open-section Power Plant Frame
(PPF) locks the entire powertrain, from the engine to the differential, into a single,
ultra-rigid unit that sharpens acceleration response.
6-speed Activematic transmission featuring a newly-developed Direct Mode. This
allows you to shift down using the steering wheel-mounted switches when driving in
the “D” range, and instantaneously selects the right gear to match the driving
conditions. Typical scenarios include using the engine to brake when entering a corner
or running downhill, or changing down to accelerate when overtaking. Normal “D”
range automatic transmission resumes as soon as the particular driving scenario has
ended. What’s more, Active Adaptive Shift (AAS) gives optimum shift selection

body rigidity. At the front, a trapezoid bar links the suspension strut towers with the

Suspension features a race-proven double wishbone layout at the front and a multi-link
configuration at the rear, with dampers, bushes and stabilizers tuned to deliver a
beautifully-balanced blend of exciting handling and ride quality. The rear suspension is
also optimized for superior stability when braking. Enhanced aerodynamics further add
to ride stability. The corner sections of the front bumper and the rear combination

New Mazda RX-8 takes the original model’s design theme of athletic tension and
refines it according to the principle of sophisticated dynamism driven by function.
The results are both functional and sporty, with improved aerodynamics and engine
cooling, newly-designed headlamps, fender side turn lamps and LED rear
combination lamps.

Designed to delight
The comfortably snug interior is remade with more dynamic forms and an enhanced
feel of quality. The centre stack broadens towards the top to give a thrusting sense of
movement. The sporty blackout-type 3-meter cluster features a unique variable red
zone in the tachometer that moves according to engine conditions, helping to prevent
over-revving when engine temperature is low. The leather material used for the
steering wheel cover is selected to give a higher tactile quality with an optimized,
reassuring feeling of grip. The seats are monotone leather for a more mature cabin
ambience, and the audio system receives Action Illumination to offer both visual
confirmation of operation and a greater sense of delight.

unique freestyle door system with pillarless design and rear-hinged rear doors opens

24.2% compared to fiscal year 1990. We introduced our unique Three Layer Wet
Paint System featuring water-based painting technology to all our factories. In
combination with Mazda’s e-coating base paint process, this reduces emissions
of both CO2 and volatile organic compounds (VOC). We also co-developed the
world’s first plant-derived plastics (bioplastics) suitable for injection moulding for
automotive interior parts. Our RX-8 Hydrogen RE runs on hydrogen and has only
water as its exhaust making this rotary engine a leading candidate for the
environment-friendly engine of the future. As for recycling of manufacturing
byproducts and waste, Mazda has achieved an outstanding recycling ratio of
99.7%.
