1. SOURCE OF IDEA:
A thermometer is a device that measures temperature or temperature gradient, using a variety
of different principles. The word thermometer is derived from two smaller word fragments,
thermo from the Greek for heat and meter from Greek, meaning to measure. Generally there
are mercury thermometers which are brittle and have chances of getting damaged. This
project will deal with this drawback of mercury thermometer and would be easily carried and
less chances of getting damaged and economical.
2. INTRODUCTION:
This LED temperature thermometer project will display the room temperature where it is
placed using 10 LEDs, with each LED representing 2 degree Fahrenheit step, forming a bar
graph display. Electronics students will learn how to use Temperature sensor and LM3914
LED driver. Another method of doing this project is using a low cost microcontroller if one is
familiar with it. Otherwise, this is a good project for beginners to electronics. The LM3914 is
a monolithic integrated circuit that senses analog voltage levels and drives10 LEDs,
providing a linear analog display. Current drive to the LEDs is regulated and programmable,
eliminating the need for resistors. Much of the display flexibility derives from the fact that all
outputs are individual, DC regulated currents. Various effects can be achieved by modulating
these currents. The individual outputs can drive transistor as well as a LED at the same time,
so controller functions including "staging" control can be performed. The LM3914 can also
act as a programmer, or sequencer.

temperature on home application such as the refrigerator or swimming pool.
(c) Laboratory use: includes monitoring experiments and chemical reactions as well as
maintaining an optimal laboratory environment.
(d) Food services use: Food services use thermometers in identifying completeness of
cooking and sanitation of ingredients.
(e) Meteorological thermometers are used to give air, atmosphere and water temperature
readings.
