Fusing fantasy
and history

Turkey time!

Moorestown High School teacher combines

historical and fantastical war literature
in his high school English class
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
What do historical wars and
fantasy have to do with each
other? As far as Moorestown
High School English teacher
Lewis Lazarow is concerned, a lot
more than one would think.
Lazarow created the War and
the Fantastic class, which combines literature about wars in history and fantastical war literature.
The kids like reading both of
them. Talking about them back
and forth, conversation style, we
make connections between the
books, Lazarow said.
Lazarow, a Marlton resident,
and his War and the Fantastic
class will be featured on NJEAs
Classroom Close-up, NJ, modeling a poetry lesson. The segment
will air on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 7:30
a.m. on NJTV.
According to NJTV, Classroom Close-up, NJ is a magazine
program focusing on innovative
education in New Jersey's public

schools. The
series features
the students,
teachers and
communities
who
create
and
participate in successful school
projects and
LAZAROW
events.
Lazarow
was originally asked to be on the
series by the Geraldine R. Dodge
Poetry Festival, an event for
teachers and students to visit
poets throughout the country.
Many of the poets are war veterans, poets with physical disabilities and more. Dodge Poetry Festival hosts days for teachers as well
as students and allows them to go
to panels to speak and ask questions to various poets.
It is a remarkable experience.
There is nothing like it. Ever
since I first went to the festival,
every two years it comes around

turkey-themed stories, songs and crafts.

The Moorestown School District went out for bonds on Nov. 18

for the Building Excellence Referendum that passed in September
in regard to school improvements.
Voters approved two referendum questions on Sept. 30 one
for a $37.6 million project that includes improvements to aging infrastructure at schools for exterior renovations, interior renovations, HVAC upgrades, electrical/security and technology upgrades, and one for $5.2 million
that includes patching and paving
of driveways and parking lots at
the schools, cafeteria table replacements at George C. Baker

School, carpeting and flooring replacements at UES, theater improvements and athletic fields improvements.
The state pledged $13.7 million
to help fund the projects through
the ROD grant program.
It was announced at the
Moorestown Board of Education
meeting that a bond sale was
made earlier that day with a result of a 3.376 percent interest
rate, less than the 5 percent that
was originally projected.
Im very pleased with those
rates. We wanted to go sooner
rather than later. So we were very
pleased with this rate, said Lynn
E. Shugars, business administrator and board secretary. We
havent calculated how this affects the individual homeowner

yet, but the $37 or so we had anticipated costing the average homeowner would actually be less than
that. So we are very pleased about
that.
Board President Don Mishler
explained that before the school
district went to bid, it still needed
to get an architect and construction manager for the projects. The
bidding process could take somewhere between 30 and 60 days.
It is possible that some things
would be able to be done this summer, but we havent identified
what they are and if we are at this
point doing anything, Mishler
said.
If the construction projects
end up coming in under budget,

This holiday season, support local businesses

Dan McDonough Jr.

is the season, as they say. Tis

the season to be jolly. Tis the
season to bundle up and drink
hot chocolate. Tis the season to spend
extra time with loved ones. Tis the
season to start your holiday shopping if you havent already. And tis
the season to shop local.
This week marks the official start to
the holiday shopping season, but if
youve been out and about this month,
you have noticed holiday decorations
and specials at stores throughout our
area.
Much of the attention of the holiday
shopping season falls on two days
Black Friday and, now, Cyber Monday but dont forget to shop local for
your holiday gifts.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the region, has immense benefits on the

local economy.
Even companies as large as American Express are touting the importance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Last year, a study reported an estimated $5.7 billion was
spent at small businesses on that day!
A vibrant and successful local business community has a trickle-down effect on our own pockets. Just think:

letter to the editor

Writer questions how
water situation handled
Regarding the letter to the editor concerning well closures:
Mr. Mullin stated the leaks were first detected in March 2013, which doesnt mean
that was the beginning of something that
may have been brewing for decades. There
have been questions and concerns about
the water table around the old RCA plant
on the east side of town.
Knowing about the questionable chemicals and taking action are two very different things. The EPA described them as
likely carcinogens. Those folks do not
like to make definitive statements about
what causes cancer. Hey, theyre a government agency and need to play both sides of
the political fence, so the term likely is

actually the word yes.

The DEP used the word prudent to
shut the wells down, which means discreetly shrewd. You bet.
With that in mind, Scott Carew patted
himself on the back and said wells were
closed voluntarily. Thats because the
stalling time was running out; they had to
do something. If not, the issue would have
gotten bigger and a forced closure would be
eminent. And we all know something as
egregious as that would provoke negative
publicity, thus casting a dark shadow over
The Best Place to Live in America story
published by Money Magazine. As for substituting bottled water when in doubt
about contaminants, I cant help but wonder if the town officials dealing with the
delays in this matter allow their children
to drink tap water.
Jean Steuernagel

Successful local businesses make

other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more ratables, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attractive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, support your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
fighting an uphill battle against the
marketing dollars of the big box
stores.
Lets all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.

Candlelight Night
returns on Dec. 5
Moorestown hosts its Candlelight
Night on Dec. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m., sponsored by the Moorestown Business Association members Fox & Roach, Berkshire Hathaway and South Jersey Federal Credit Union.
As the holidays approach, the Main
Street business district opens its doors
for a fun, family-shopping night filled
with the sounds and tastes of the season.
Percheron Park will be filled with the
sound of sleigh bells as the Percheron
horse carriage rides roll down Main
Street for the second year. These strong,
gentle horses were first bred in
Moorestown in the 1800s and soon will
be commemorated in the park. Buy tickets early for this wonderful old-fashioned entertainment.

women. It was named in honor of
Dr. Howard M. Curtis, a pediatrician at what is now known as Virtua Memorial.
This facility is widely used by
members of our community who
undergo
cancer
treatments
through Virtuas Fox Chase Cancer Program. The renovations
will enhance the privacy and
healing environment for patients
and their families. The renovated
center will help provide patients
battling cancer with the best experience possible during a very
difficult time.

Teams record a first

for coach, too
TEAMS
Continued from page 4

Maryellen Heeneke, the team finished with a 14-0 record for the
2014 fall season. Overall, the team
finished its middle school career
with an amazing record of 28-0.
Even more impressive is that the
team did not allow a goal in any of
the 28 games played during their
seventh- and eighth-grade seasons. This has never been accomplished before in the school's history, according to Heeneke.
Heeneke, who coaches the
eighth-grade team but not the seventh, was unaware of the accomplishment initially.
I didnt realize it, but as the
season went along we noticed that
we hadnt been scored upon yet
and the girls said we werent
scored upon last year either. Its
an amazing group of girls,
Heeneke said.
The majority of the teams roster was the same as last years
seventh-grade team, and Heeneke

Email us at news@moorestownsun.com

said its their dedication that

makes the difference.
Its such a love of field hockey
that they have. They are so dedicated and so committed to the
sport, Heeneke said. We have
excellent feeder programs and
most if not all of the girls play for
travel teams.
Even in her 31st year of coaching field hockey, this was a first
for Heeneke.
Ive had undefeated seasons
but never a season when the team
wasnt scored upon, Heeneke
said. Its a special group. Its
going to be interesting to follow
them going forward. Im hoping
this group stays together. I cant
wait to watch them play at high

NOV. 26DEC. 2, 2014 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 15

Second annual tree lighting is Dec. 1

Come one! Come all! The board
of trustees and staff of the Community House are excited to kick
off the 2014 holiday season with
our neighbors, friends and family
at the second annual tree lighting
celebration.
CBS 3 and Moorestowns own
Kathy Orr will once again join us
on the front lawn of the Community House to continue this memorable tradition celebrating the
most wonderful time of the year.
On Monday, Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m.,
the holiday season will officially
begin in Moorestown as our community gathers on the front lawn
of the Community House for the
2nd Annual Tree Lighting Celebration.
Last year, more than 1,000
friends and families shared this
memory with us and we hope to
see even more of you this year.
We were amazed at the
turnout to last years celebration.
Clearly, this is something everyone in town was excited to experience, and we expect this years

event to be even better, said

George Schulmann, board president.
The Community House represents Moorestowns unity and
focus on giving back. Our mission
is to bring people together and
bond them to our town. The tree
lighting unites friends, families
and organizations in such a positive way, and I am thrilled that we
are able to bring this tradition to
our community, Laurie Palko
said, trustee and chair of the Tree
Lighting Committee.
Festivities will begin on the
front lawn at 5:30 p.m. and will include:
Childrens story by Timothy
R. Hollybottom
Musical entertainment by the
Madrigals and the Philly POPS
Warm clothing collections by
MooreKids
Hot chocolate donated by
Brandywine Senior Living
Cookies and water donated by
Wegmans
Toy collection by the Salva-

tion Army
Candy canes passed around
by Community House board
members and staff
The event will culminate with
the lighting of our 20-foot Norway
Spruce generously donated last
year by Pete Palko in honor of his
mother.
The tree will once again be decorated with beautiful lights graciously donated by Moorestown
Hardware with the labor to hang
the lights being donated by Hyperion Tree Service.
The tree lighting, which will be
broadcast live around 6:15 p.m.,
will be followed by a drive by visit
from Santa on a fire truck!

The mission of the Community
House is to continue to strengthen our community by providing a

and it is something to look forward to, to bring students and experience it as a teacher as well,
Lazarow said.
The Dodge Poetry Festival told
him how Classroom Close-up,
NJ was doing a segment about a
teachers experience at the festival and asked if he would be interested, since he had been going
since 1998. Of course, Lazarow
agreed.
It started off with cameras following Lazarow around the festival and then ended with a 10minute interview about his experiences at the festival. Then,
Lazarow received an email from
Classroom Close-up, NJ, saying

it wanted to take this full circle

and see how Lazarow has brought
his experiences at the festival to
his classroom.
Having war poets such as
Brian Turner and Yusef Komunyakaa, what better class to bring
what he had taken from the festival to than the War and the Fantastic literature class?
It was an easy fit to take my
experiences
from
Dodge,
Lazarow said.
On Oct. 30, NJEAs Classroom
Close-up,
NJ
came
to
Moorestown High School to film a
conversation Lazarow had with
his students. Lazarow chose
poems from Turner and Komunyakaa as well as a few others to
have a discussion about the
poems and warrior writers. The
conversation included responses,
reactions and feelings about the
poems and the writers experi-

Lazarow said it felt weird being
on camera, and he personally felt
a little more self-conscious. Although he is used to being in front
of a crowd of students, knowing
he is being filmed was a little
nerve-wracking. But Lazarow admitted that, in the end, it was fine
and he did whatever it is I usually do.
My favorite part was always
my favorite part: listening to the
students. So much of my philosophy, even though I am the educational leader of the room, it is
about their willingness to be a
participant. What they say and
get from it is what I love that they
do. Looking at the material, saying, this is what I saw or this is a
question that I had. Im glad that
people will see my favorite part,
hearing
them
offer
their
thoughts. I wouldve been completely happy if they just filmed
the students, Lazarow said.
Although Lazarow expressed a
bit of hesitance about being on
camera, he seemed happy to have
the opportunity for his class and
students be featured. He also expressed his love of teaching his
students as well as his thanks to
the school, allowing him much
opportunity in regard to his class.
I love what I do. I love the fact
that I have the opportunity to
work with the kids I work with. I
love the fact that I work in a place
that was willing to take the
chance to do a war and fantasy
class. I dont know that everyone
would give a class like that a
chance at the high school level.
And here was Moorestown saying
lets give it the full support and
encourage kids to sign up for the
class. That is the progressive attitude that keeps kids wanting to
learn more, that they can apply
that knowledge to other things,
and that means a lot, Lazarow
said.
Lazarow and his War and the
Fantastic class can be seen on
Sunday, Dec. 28 at 7:30 a.m. on
NJTV. Be sure to check your local
listings for the channel number.

of this community is a tremendous gift. The Department of
Parks and Recreation is proud to
serve as a leader in the state for its
progressive special needs programs. Through gifts from Begley
Law Firm, the Special Needs Social Skills Classes were offered at
the Church Street Recreation Center. Additional gifts from the
Moorestown Education Foundation, Bayada Nurses, Quaker
Wealth and Sean Fischel Connect
funded the Summer Special Needs
Program (Day Camp) and was
able to provide full-day coverage
of services to nearly 20 special
needs students. Additional finan-

cial gifts as well as the gift of their

time have been donated by the
Williams and Altschuler families.
In January, a Special Needs
Providers Fair will be hosted at
the Church Street Recreation Center to continue to build the
breadth of opportunities special
needs families and professionals.
The department also thanks
the Friends Enrichment Program, MoorArts and MooreKids
for their generous donation of ongoing scholarships for the Summer Parks and Summer Theater
programs and additional recreation programs throughout the
year. More than 600 lunches were
provided by Live Civilly in 2014 to
many Summer Parks Program
campers attending on these scholarships. The Perfect Game has
joined the ranks of supporting organizations by collecting used
sports equipment and providing
it to families through the Recreation Department offices. Additional gifts for the Summer Parks
Program were donated by Home
Depot for the Picket Fence Project

and Moorestown Hardware for

additional supplies.
Additionally, through the generosity of grant programs, the
Department of Parks and Recreation has been able to make improvements to facilities and parks
without additional burdens to
Moorestown residents. For example, the Burlington County Municipal Grant Program awarded
Moorestown $250,000 for purposes
of Phase I of the Hockey Rink
rehab program for the Wesley
Bishop Hockey Rink. The funding from this program will allow
the DPR to improve the overall
stability and safety of these
rinks, which receive so much use.
Additionally, the Macys National
Recreation and Park Association
partnership awarded $250 to
Strawbridge Lake Park.
The Church Street Recreation
Center, (aka The Rec) after undergoing a year-long rehabilitation,
entered 2014 with big ideas and big
plans. Without the support of

Community-Sing of Messiah is Dec. 7

On Sunday evening, Dec. 7,
from 5 to 8 p.m. the First United
Methodist Church, Camden and
Pleasant Valley Avenues, will celebrate the Advent season by presenting the Community-Sing of
Handels Messiah for the 33rd
consecutive year, under the direction of Donna Banes. Accompanying on the organ will be Glenn
Rodgers, organist and director of
music.
There are no rehearsals before
the event and there are no fea-

tured choirs or soloists, making

this particular Messiah-Sing
unique. Everyone is seated together with others who sing the
same vocal part (soprano, alto,
tenor or bass) and the solo numbers are sung by the entire vocal
section, thus giving everybody
the chance to sing a solo. Even
though the primary intent of a
Messiah-Sing is for those who
come to sing, there have been
those who just come to listen and
sit in the middle of a choir of a

few hundred singers.

The program will begin at 5
p.m. in the church sanctuary,
break for an intermission with
light refreshments, and end at approximately 8 p.m. with the Hallelujah Chorus. Individuals my
bring a music score or purchase
one at the door at a cost of $8.50.
The facilities meet the standard set by the American Disabilities Act for general access. Childcare will be available and a free
will offering will be taken.

Next meeting
is Dec. 9

the money left would be used to
pre-pay the bonds. The district is
only allowed to spend the money
on things voters approved.
Mishler also brought up the
Upper Elementary School roof
that he said a lot of people have
been asking questions about. The
school roof is still under warranty, with five years left, and is
planned to be replaced before it
gets out of warranty. However,
the board put it in the bond referendum thinking about timing,
prices, low interest rates and
state aid.
It was a tough decision. The
board debated it significantly,
Mishler said.
It is something that must be
planned and organized, as financially responsible as we can for
the voters, Mishler said.
In other news:
According to the board, there
has been some confusion in regard to the PARCC tests and opt
outs. In New Jersey, there is no
opting out for the PARCC test.
The next BOE meeting will be
Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the William
W. Allen Middle School.

WORD
Continued from page 24
businesses, schools and individuals, these plans would still be on
the shelf, but now, as 2014 comes to
a close and 2015 is right around the
corner, these plans are ready to be
unveiled. Generous donations
from Philip J. Hiller Tandem Associates Plumbing Contractor, Bruce
Gargano and Carpenters Local
255, and PMH Engineering, to
make the Rec Center third-floor
kitchen functional, has prepared
the Rec Center for the unveiling its
commercial kitchen plans and
culinary classes. Eagle Scout
Brendan Hillman will be painting
the newly renovated art and music
rooms on the third floor as part of
his gift to The Rec. The donation
of two pianos from Mary Roberts
Elementary School and the tuning
services of Anthony Darrow have
prepared the third-floor music studio for instructor Dante Covert,
and the first students have already

enrolled.
Every afternoon The Rec hosts
more than 40 youth in its Open
Gym after school program.
Through a generous donation of
bus service through Moorestown
Township Public Schools, students receive transportation from
WAMS daily to find activity and
security with rec staff and their
peers. Through the generous provisions of Live Civilly and its
partnership with the Moorestown
Ministerium, Moorestown Jewish Association and MEND
(Moorestown Ecumenical Neighborhood Development) every afternoon these youth receive
healthy snacks. Ministerium
partners include: First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown,
First
Baptist
Church
of
Moorestown, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Trinity Episcopal
Church, First United Methodist
Church, Second Baptist Church,
Our Lady of Good Counsel, The
Religious Society of Friends in
Moorestown and HOPE Community Church. With more than 200

bodies in the building each week,

the Live Civilly ExCELS Snack
Program helps to maintain not
only healthy bodies, but also a
healthier atmosphere. Additionally, the Live Civilly ExCELS
Homework Help Program is available to all Moorestown youth.
This free, after-school, academic
assistance program reaches
young people in need of a helping
hand. Sean Fischel Connect also
generously donated the funds to
provide WIFI at the Church Street
Recreation Center so that program participants or parents of
participants have ease of access.
The Rec has adopted a Word of
the Month program, and this
months word is gratitude. Encouraging the youth and Rec Center participants to embrace this
word brings our Thanksgiving article to a close. Many thanks to
the organizations, businesses,
programs and individuals who
support the many activities provided by the Department of Parks
and Recreation. Thanksgiving
blessings to our community.

Be social.
