Literature Survey and Research Seminar
University of Texas at Dallas
Fall 2007
This course is a part of the requirement for the PhD program in Economics. Thus, it is open only for PhD
students in the Economics program at UT-Dallas who have completed their first year of study and who
have done at least some coursework in their field of specialization.
Course Description
This seminar serves two groups of students: (i) those who write a literature survey required for the PhD
program in Economics, and (ii) those who write the research paper required for the PhD program in
Economics. The purpose of the course is to provide a forum for feedback and joint learning while each
student works on his/her own project.
Unless the student is continuing a project (i.e., a literature survey or a research project) from a previous
semester, the first order of business is to define the project. This is done in coordination with both the
instructor and a faculty member in the field under which the project is headed.
During the semester, each student makes regular presentations. These presentations reflect aspects of
work towards completion of the project, as well as coverage of the textbooks of this course.

Grading Policy
If a student cannot present at a scheduled session, he/she must find a substitute and inform the instructor
and scheduled discussant of the change. Do this as early as possible, so as to be fair to the substitute and
the discussant (and the rest of the class, which as always is reading the paper ahead of time).

procedures regarding travel and risk-related activities. Information regarding these rules and regulations may be
