fewaddedtwiststoincreaseyieldsofalcohol,givemore
options,etc.Whatis
primarilydifferentistherecipesforBeer,andhigheralcohols;

ex:distilled
alcohols.Youwillreadhowtobuildabasicdistillation
apparatusfordistilling
higheralcohols.
Pleasetakenote,though,thatwhileitisperfectlylegal
tobrewyourown
alcohol,itiscompletelyillegaltodistillyourownalcohol.
Thisisacrime,no
matterhowyoulookatit.Now,astowhetherornotthatcrime
isenforced,ornot,
isanotherissue.Butbeawarethatdistillingalcoholis(for
somereason),illegal.

qualitywinethatisbyallmeansverypalatable.
Also,Ihaveaddedamethodtomakingadistillation
apparatusathome.Itisnot
themostfancyapparatus,butitwillgetyoustarted,ifyou

wanttogothatdirection.
Inthepreviousversion,Icoveredthebasicsofdistillation,
butdidn'tgoonabouthow
tomakeyourownstill.Buildingastillisverysubjective,so
it'salluptoyou,how

Ihavereceivedafewemailsfrompeopleaskingsomesimple
questions.Themostfrequentquestion
Iget,though,isifyouwillgoblindordiefrommakingthe
alcoholcoveredinthistextfile.
Theanswerisaflatno;youwillnotdieorgoblind.Let
meexplaintheoriginofthismyth,and
whyitdoesnotapplytoyou:
Theideathathomemadealcoholcancauseblindnessisrooted
intruth,buttypicallyappliestoalmost
noone.Whenyoumakealcohol(beer,wine,whiskey,whatever),a
byproductismethanol.Thisgoesforany
alcohol;eventhelargestcompaniesmakingalcoholhavethese
byproducts,thereisnopossiblewayforyou
topreventthem.Methanolisthepoisonouscousintoethanol
(drinkablealcohol).Methanoliswhatis
primarilyresponsiblefornastyhangovers,andisthecauseof
theblindnesslegend.
Thefactisthatyes,youcangoblindfromdrinking
methanol.Butthisistheproductofabsolute

unequivocalcarelessnessonthepartofthepersonmakingthe
alcohol.Wearetalkingcarelessnessbeyond
measure.
Here'swhathappens:Youmakeyourbatchofalcohol(beer,
wine,whatever).Thedrinkismadeupmostly
ofwater,thenabout510%ethanol(drinkablealcohol),andthen
about0.2%methanol(orless).Ifleftin
thebeerorwine,thenyouhavenoproblematall;it'snot
enoughtoevenbegintoaffectyourhealth.Even
ifyoudrank50ofthesebeersyoumade,thealcoholisgoingto
killyoubeforethemethanoleverwill.All
themethanolisgoingtodohereisincreasehowbadthehangover
is.
Theproblemcomesupwhenyougotodistillthestuff.Since
youareconcentratingthealcohol,youare
alsoconcentratingthemethanol.Becausethemethanolboils
beforetheethanol,itisthefirstliquidtodrip
duringdistilling.Anyonewhodistillsalwaysknowstothrowaway
thefirst1/4cupofliquid,sinceitcontains
mostofthemethanol.Buteventhisisnotenoughtohaveany
negativehealtheffects;it'lljustmakethe
hangoverworse,andmakeyouralcoholtastekindofbad.Ifthis
isleftmixedinwiththerestofthedrinkable
alcohol,thenyou'lljusthaveabadhangover,alongwithsome
nastyaftertasteswhiledrinkingit.
TheREALproblemcomesfrompeoplewhodobig(andImean
BIG)distillations.Ifyouhavea1000gallonstill,
thenthefirstgallonthatcomesoverwillbemethanol.Onrare
occasions,moonshinerswhoarecompleteidiotswill
justrunthatmethanolintoagallonjug,andconsideritgoodto
go.Theother99jugsofmoonshinearefine,
drinkablealcohol.Butthatfirstjugisjustpurepoison.
Ifheweretomixthat1gallonamongtheother99gallons,
itwouldjusttainttheother99gallonsand
leaveyouwithamoonshinethatdoesn'ttasteright,andgiveyou
abadhangover;butitwillnotkillyou.It's
dilutednow.
Ifheweretobesmartaboutit,andflushthat1gallon
downthetoilet,thentheother99gallonswouldbe
alright.

Sonowyouknowthereason.
Doesthisapplytoyou?No.Justthrowawaythefirst1/4
cupofliquidyouaredistilling,andquitworrying
aboutit.Ifyouaremakingbeerorwine,thendon'tworryabout
it.

DANGERS
========
Therearesomethingstoavoid.Thebiggestdanger,inmy
opinion,isdrinkinganalcoholthatyoumade
thatisnotpoisonous,buttasteslikeshit.Try,ifyoucan,to
makeyouralcoholgoodonyourtastebuds.
Thefirsttruedangerthatyouwillrunintoisinfection.
Sinceyouarefermentingalcohol(rotting
sugars,insuchaway),youopenupthepossibilityofyourdrink
becominginfectedwithabacteria.Ifyou
seesignsofabacterialinfection,thenyouneedtoclean
everythingout,andstartover.Thisdoeshappen,
eventopeoplewhohavebeenbrewingforyears.It'seasyenough
tospotaninfection;ifanythingisgrowing,
thatlookslikemold,it'sbad.Offcolors,suchasgreen,black,
yellow,white,etc;theyarebad.Infections
willalwaysstartsmallinonelocation,andthengrow.It'snot
likeonedayyouwillcheckonitandthe
wholejugwillbeblack.Again,ifyouspotanyofthis,start
over.Don'tevenconsiderdrinkingit;it's
poisonous.
Theseconddangerisindistilling.Ifyoustartbuilding
yourownstill,andyougettothepointof
soldering;donotunderanycircumstancesuseleadsolder.You
mustuseplumber'sleadfreesolder.When
distilling,alcoholleechesthemetalsintotheliquid,whichis
usuallyfine.Butifthereisleadpresent,
thenitwillgiveyouleadpoisoning.Thisalsomeansthatyou
cannotuseacarradiatorasacondenserfora
still;theyareloadedwithlead.Theyalsohavesmallamountsof
antifreezeleftover,whichwillpoisonthe
alcohol.Don'tbestupid.

Anotherdangerisreallynonexistentanymore.Butitis
stilladanger,technically.Thatdangeriswhen
peopleaddundrinkablepoisonstothedistilledalcoholto
increasethequantity.Thisdoesn'thappenanymore,
asitwasonlyaprobleminAmericanProhibition.Itwas
perpetuatedbygreedypeoplewantingtosellmorealcohol
thantheycouldproduce.Moralhere:Don'taddanythingtoyour
alcoholthatisundrinkable.
Somethingtoremember,too,ifyouaretrulyseton
obtainingalcohol.Donotthinkthatpharmacybought
alcoholsaredrinkable."Isopropylalcohol"(rubbingalcohol)is
adifferenttypeofalcohol,andispoisonous.
"Methanol"isadifferenttypeofalcohol,andispoisonousas
well.Sometimesyouwillfind"ethylalcohol"
atthepharmacy,butthis,too,hasbeenmadepoisonousbyadding
smallamountsofanundrinkablechemicalto
it.Thewarningissimple:Donotdrinkalcoholsboughtatthe
pharmacy.ThisalsogoesforMouthwash;don't
drinkit,ithaspoisonsinitwhichwillmakeyouverysick,or
evendie.
Thelastdanger,whichismorecommon,isalcoholpoisoning.
Thisreferstoconsumingtoomuchdrinkable
alcohol.Pleaseknowyourlimits.Donot'chug'alcoholasfast
asyoucan.Justdrinkyourdrinkandenjoyyour
time.Immaturekidsaretheoneswhodoshotaftershot,andchug
theiralcohol.Itmakesforashortlivednight,
baddecisions,andterriblehangovers.Youcangetplentydrunk
bydrinkingyourdrinklikeasodathroughout
thenight.Justknowyourlimits,andtreatyouralcoholwith
somerespect.Don'toverdoit,becauseitcanhave
badconsequences.

Throughthisdocument
I'llexplain,asyouneedthem,whatyou'llneed.Afewthings
thatwouldbeagood
ideatohave,though:

Takenotethatifyouareseriousaboutmakingalcohol,you
willreadthis
textfile,andthengetongoogleandstartsearching.Thereare
hundredsofbooksand
websiteswaybetterthanthistextfilethatwillgiveyouway
moreindepth
information.Thistextfileislegitimate,allofthesethingsdo
work;butitisthe
barebonestarterforsomeonewhoisjustmessingaround.
Ifyouareunderage,tryingtomakealcoholunderyour
parentsnose.Thenyouwillrequireasmall
spaceinyourroomtomakethealcohol.Justrememberthatmaking
alcoholputsoffanodor.Thisodor
isn'tbad(somethinkitis;mywifeandIlovethesmell),so
youaregoingtohavetobemindfulof
it.Ifyouweretryingtohideit,youcouldn'tkeepitinyour
room,you'dbeabletosmellitassoon
asyouopenedthedoor.Youwould,ontheotherhand,probablybe
abletokeepthejuginyourcloset.
Youwouldn'tsmellitinyourroom,butassoonasyouopened
yourclosetyouwouldgetanoverwhelming
smellofalcohol.Ifyouhaveashedsomewhere,thenyoucankeep
thejug(s)intheshedtoferment.But
rememberthatthetemperaturehastoberight.Ifitiswinter,

beagoodidea.Alcoholneedsabout80degFtofermentproperly.
Sothesummermonthsareideal.Youcan
fermentduringthewinter,butitwillbevery,veryslow.You
canalwaysinsulatethejug(s)with
blanketstokeepthemwarm.Justgetinventive,andfigureit
out.
Personally,Iusedtomakealcoholinmycloset.Myparents
cameinmyroomsometimes,andtheynever
smelleditcomingoutofmycloset.Ihadfourjugshiddeninthe
backcornerwithsomestuffinfrontso
youcouldn'tseewhatwasgoingonbackthere.Whenyouopenedmy
closetdoor,youcouldsmelltheextremely

overwhelmingsmelloffermentingorangesandgrapes;butitnever
leechedpastthecloset.
Togetmymomtopickupsomeyeastwhileatthestore,I
convincedherthatIwantedtomakesome
bread.ItoldherIneededabout8packages,becauseIdidn't
knowhowmanytimesIwasgoingtoscrewup
thebread.Ididmakesomebreadusingapacketofyeast,butthe
other7wenttomyalcohol.
WhenIwasabout14,Iwasintown,andwenttoawine
making/beermakingshopthere.Ibought$10
worthofwinemaker'syeast.TheguywhoownedthestoreknewI
wasunderage,butjustgiggledthatIwas
buyingthisstuff.HeknewwhatIwasgoingtodowithit.But
it'snotillegaltosellakidyeast,and
thosestoreownersenjoyknowingthatsomekidsaredoing
somethinginteresting,sotherewasnoproblemthere.
Justbecareful,ifyou'rehidingitfromyourparents.
Asfarasdormrooms;youcanbrewalcoholinyourdorm
room.Mostplaceshaverulesaboutrunningahot
plateinthebedroom,orsimilarrules,sothiswouldprobably
forbidyoufromdistillingalcoholinyour
dorm.Butjustbrewingwine/beer;noproblematall.

ALCOHOLINTHECABINET
===============
Thisismorefortheunderagekidswhowanttogetdrunk,
butdon'thavethetimeand/orabilitytomake
theirownalcohol.Ifyoucannotfindawaytomakealcoholin
yourcloset,thenyouareeitherlazy,ordumb.
Butinanycase,thisworksjustaswell.
Allofthoseextractsthatarekeptinthecabinet,
typicallywiththebakingstuff;theyallcontainalcohol.
ExceptforVanillaExtract,thatusuallydoesnotcontain
alcohol.ButifyougetRumextract,RootBeerextract,
Orangeextract;theyareallperfectlydrinkable.Theyarevery
potentextracts,sotheydon'ttasteverygood
rightoffthebat.Soifyoumasktheminacocktail,itshould
workoutfine.Forexample,ifyouweretogeta

bottleofOrangeextract,whynotpouritinwithasmallglass
oforangejuice?
Thisisauselessmethod,inmyopinion.Ionlywriteit
becausewhenIwasabouttwelveyearsold,Isnuck
someextractsoutofourcabinet,andgotdrunk.It'slaughable.
Butit'sthere.

ABASICALCOHOLRECIPE
===============
Wemakeethanol(drinkablealcohol)bythefermentationof
sugarusingyeast.
Inthisrecipe,youwillneedthreebasicingredients:
*Sugar
*Water
*Yeast
Letsstartwiththeyeast.YouwillgotoWalMart,or
wherever,andgotothe
flour/sugar/cakesectiontofindtypicalBaker'sYeast.Youwill
findtwoitems,either
theyeastinsmallpackets(soldasthreepacketseach),ora
smallcontainerofyeast.
Isuggestbuyingthepackets.Ifyouwouldlike,though,youcan
orderyeastoffofthe
internetthatwillbebetter.Thethingaboutbaker'syeastis
thebreadtastethatit
haswithit(thisstuffisusedtomakebread),butitis
tolerableandwillwork.If
youordertheyeastoffoftheinternet,searchforanyyeast
usedtomakehigh
concentrationsofalcohol;thisiscalled"TurboYeast."Turbo
Yeastorderedonlineis
exceptionallycheap;alittleover$1.00perpacket.Whenyouuse
turboyeast,youcan
potentiallyproduce18%alcohol;thats36Proofalcohol.
Thesugariseasy;justgetacheapbagofsugar.You'll
onlyneedafewcups
pergallonofalcoholyoumake,sojustgetabigbagandmakea
craploadofalcohol;
simpleasthat.Youcansubstitutenormalwhitesugarwithbrown

sugar,aswell.Ifyou
substitutewithbrownsugar,thenyouareaddingadifferent
flavor.Thismaybe
suggestedforthosewantingtoexperiment.Ifyoudistillthe
brownsugaralcohol,you
willhavearum,ofsorts.
Waterisnotextraordinarilyimportant.Ifyouhavedecent
tapwaterinyour
house,thenthiswillduejustfine.Ifyourtapwateris
suspect,orifyouwouldlike
a"cleaner"tastingalcohol,thenjustbuyafewgallonsof
drinkingwater(theseare
like80centseach).Also,youwillneedthe1gallonjugs
anyway,soyoumayaswell
justbuythegallonsofdrinkingwaterandusethewaterthey
have.
Forthematerials,youwillneedonlyapackofballoons,
andthegallonsize
jug(s).Whenitcomestothegallonsizejugs,Isuggestusing
thedrinkingwaterjugs
ofcourse,butifyouareforcedtouseamilkjug,thenbe
certaintocleanitout
usingbleachandhotwater;youaregoingtobefermentingsugar
inhereforafew
days,soyoudefinitelywanttomakeforcertainthatyoudon't
getanycrapbacterial
growthinthem.Thingsmustbeclean;period!
Thematerialscanandshouldbealtered.Theabove(the
plasticgallonjug,
andballoons)areforthemostbasicthrowntogethersetup.For
someonewantingto
havealittlemoresuccess,Isuggestbuyinga5gallonplastic
pailthesecanbe
boughtatWalMart,Lowes,HomeDepot,orvirtuallyanywhere.
Theyaretypicalwhite5
gallonplasticpailsthathavealid.Thiswillbeusedfor
fermentingyouralcohol
insteadofa1gallonplasticjug.Theyallowformorehead
space,betterfermentation,
andmorecontrol.
Theballoonsareusedtokeepairfromenteringintothe

container;theyare
useful,butnotthebest.IsuggestthatyoubuyanAirLock.You
canfindairlockson
Ebay,anybrewshop,oranyonlinebrewshopforabout$0.75
centsperairlock.All
theydoiskeepairfromenteringintothecontainerbyusinga
waterbarrier.I
suggestyouhaveoneofthese;theyareworthit.Touseit,
simplydrillaholeinthe
lidofyourcontainer,andslidetheairlockintothehole.When
theairlockis
filledwithwater,itwillallowairtoescape,butnotallowair
tocomein.
Tostart,add31/2cupsofsugartothegallonsizedjug.
Next,fillitwith
13cupsoflukewarmwater.Now,inasaucepan(pot),add1cup
oflukewarmwater,
anddumpapacketofyeastinit.Donotstirtheyeast;itwill
disturbit.Youwant
toactivatetheyeast,sojustletitsitthereforalittle
whiletohydrate.Youwill
begintonoticethattheyeastisfoamingandbubbling.Oncethe
yeasthasdissolved
completelyintothecupofwater,youcanstiritalittlebit,
andaddittothe
gallonjugwiththesugarandwater.
Notethattheaboveprocedureismeantforthegallonsized
jug.Scalethisup
times4ifyouareusingtheplasticpail.Soyouwoulduse14
cupsofsugar,and
31/4gallonsofwater.Youdonotneedtoscaleuptheamountof
yeastadded;stickwith
1packet,anditwilldotheexactsamethingasitdidto1
gallon.
Putthecaponthejug,andshakethelivingcrapoutofit
togetallofthe
sugarandyeastdissolvedcompletelyinthewater.Youshould
noticeimmediatefoaming
action.Nowtakethecapoff,andputaballoonoverthetopof
thecontainer;secure
itwithtape.Nowpokeabout5verysmallpinholesinthetopof
theballoon.Now

it'stimetowait.
Ifusingtheplasticpail,insteadyoushouldpourtheyeast
intoit,thenstir
itwithalargewoodenspoontogiveitsomeairtoworkoffof.
Onceitisstirred
verywell,putthelidonwiththeairlock,andletitwork.
Whenyouaremakingalcohol,abyproductiscarbondioxide.
Thiscarbon
dioxideneedstoescapefromthejugwhilealsonotletting
oxygenin.Oxygenis
damagingtothefermentationprocess,sotheballoonprotects
everythingfromoxygen
whilealsolettingthecarbondioxideoutsafely.Inafewhours,
youwillseethe
ballooninflateandhearthecarbondioxidecomingout.Putthe
juginagoodplace
(likeinyourcloset),andallowittofermentforabout7to10
days.Thistimeis
notspecific,butyoucanjudgewhenthefermentationisdoneby
viewingifthe
balloonhasdeflated.Oncetheballoonhasdeflatedalot,andis
nolongerputting
offanygas,thenyouralcoholisready.
Fortheplasticpail,youcanjudgewhenitisdonebyhow
manybubblescome
outofyourairlockperminute.Whenitstopsblowingbubbles
out,itisdone.
Rememberthatyoudonotwantyourfermenttobetoohot,ortoo
cold;thiswillkill
theyeast.Ifitisreallycoldinyourhouse,theninsulatethe
jug,orbucket,with
somethingtokeepthewarmthinside.Ifitissuperiorlyhot
insideyourhouse,then
stickthebucketinthecoolestplaceinthehouse;likethe
kitchen.Donot
refrigerate;thiswillstoptheyeast'saction.
Youshouldnoticeatthebottomofthecontainersome
sediment;thisisjust
yeastleftoversthattastelikebreadandwillmakeyoufart
(it'strue).Simplypour
thestrangesmellingsugarwineintoanewcontainer,andleave

theyeastbehind.If
youwantittotastebetter,letitsitforaboutamonth.Itis
perfectlyfineto
drink,though.Theconcentrationofalcoholislow,butdrinking
itservesasno
problemwhatsoever.
Ifyouusedtheturboyeast,thentherewillbenobread
smell,ortaste,at
all.Rememberthatagoodtellofwhetherornotthealcoholis
doneiswhetherornot
youcantasteasugarysubstance,orabittersubstance.Ifthe
liquidtastessugary;
thenitdidnotwork.Ifittastesbitter;thenyoumadealcohol.
