TUTORIAL 4
Assignment 3:Hand in your calculations for Questions 1, 2&3 (NOTE 3
QUESTIONS ARE DUE)
TIME/ DATE: 5pm Friday June 2 2014 PLEASE WRITE YOUR TUTORIAL
DAY ON THE COVER (Wed, Thu or Fri)
LOCATION: The handing in boxes on Level 3 in ME building (outside Purcell
room)
LATE PENALTIES will be applied.
This assignment should take each student about 5 hours to complete.

Question 1
a)
The 30 kg wheel rolls without slipping. If it has a radius of gyration KAB=1.2 m
about its axle AB, determine its angular velocity so that the normal reaction at C
becomes 600N.

b)
The motor weighs 50kg and has a radius of gyration of 0.2m about the z-axis. The
shaft of the motor is supported by bearings at A and B, and is turning at a constant
rate s=100k rad/s, while the frame has an angular velocity of y=2j rad/s.
Determine the bearing forces at A and B exerted on shaft due to this motion.

Question 2
The first stage of two-stage rocket weighs 100kg when empty, carries 750kg of fuel,
burns fuel at a rate of 20kg/s and has an exhaust velocity of 2000 m/s. when the first
stages fuel is used up, its shell (the 100kg) is discarded and the second stage is
ignited. The second stage weigh 75kg when empty, carries 550kg of fuel, burns fuel
at a rate of 20kg/s and also has an exhaust velocity of 2000m/s. If this rocket is used
to launch a 50kg payload, assume g is constant and determine
1. The initial thrust force exerted on the payload and the initial acceleration of
the rocket.
2. The velocity of the payload after 40 second
3. The velocity of the payload after 40 second assuming that the rocket is a
single stage rocket (single tank). Which design is more efficient; a single stage
or multistage and why?

Question 3
A uniform disk of radius r and mass md rolls without slipping on a cylindrical
surface and is attached to a uniform slender bar AB of mass mb. The bar is attached
to a spring of constant K and can rotate freely in the vertical plane about point A as
shown in the figure . If the bar AB is displaced by small angle and released,
determine

a) The energy of the system in terms of and .

..

b) The equation of motion in terms of and using Lagranges equations.

c) The natural frequency of vibration of the system.

Question 4
The top consists of thin disk that has a weight of 8 N and radius 0.3 m. The rod has
a negligible mass and a length of 0.5 m. If the top is spinning with an angular
velocity s=300 rad/s, determine the steady state precessional angular velocity p
when
1. =90o
2. =40o
y

Question 5
A 1.5 Mg test rocket carries 6.5 Mg of fuel and stands vertical ready for liftoff. Due
to a miscalculations in the design of its boosters, the fuel burns at only 150 kg/s and
the relative exhaust velocity ue=450 m/s, assume gravitational acceleration is
constant g =9.81 m/s2 and determine:
a) The time t at which liftoff occurs.
b) The maximum speed that will be attained by the rocket.

Question 6
A uniform rod ABC of mass mR is supported by a pin at B and is attached to a
spring at C. It is connected at A to block DE of mass md which is attached to a
spring and can roll without friction, each springs can act in tension or compression.
If the rod ABC is given a small rotation about its longitudinal axis, determine
1. The kinetic energy of the system after a small rotation.
2. The equation of the motion using Lagranges equations.
3. Verify the equation of motion by using a different method.
4. The natural frequency of small oscillation.
