BDS Subsystem
BDS subsystem serves as the CBTS communication control center. In
addition, it implements baseband signal processing such as baseband
signals modulation and demodulation, linear summation, Abis interface
functions, and cell sharing.
BDS subsystem contains the following boards:

Channel Processing Module (CHM)

Data Service Module (DSM)

Remote Interface Module (RIM)

Communication Control Module (CCM)

GPS Control Module (GCM)

SDH Network Module (SNM)

Baseband Interface Module (BIM)

Site Alarm Module (SAM)

FIGURE 8 - BDS SYSTEM BLOCK DIAGRAM

Note:
Above figure does not shows the BIM board. BIM board functions as an interface
unit, which either connects BDS with BSC or extended BTS.

BDS subsystem performs the following functions:

BDS Forward Signal Processing

BSC transmits voice and data IP packets to the CBTS through Abis.
DSM board performs Abis protocol termination. SNM board is an
alternate way to receive voice and data packets from BSC. SNM board
converts Abis low-speed data and SDH STM-1 frames to long-distance
Abis data and sends it to the DSM board. DSM board transmits Abis
data to the CCM board for switching towards the relevant CHM board
of primary BDS subsystem or secondary BDS subsystem for CDMA
baseband forward modulation. RIM board multiplexes the forward data
and transmits it to the RFS system. GCM board supplies reliable clock
sources for CBTS boards.

BDS Reverse Signal Processing

RFS system sends reverse signals to the RIM board for baseband
demodulation. RIM board demultiplexes reverse signals and transmits
these signals to the CHM board. CHM board converts the reverse voice
and packet data into frames, and transmits data as IP packets to the
CCM board. CCM board switches IP packets and then routes them to
the DSM board for Abis protocol processing. Finally, DSM board

28

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 1 - CBTS Cabinet

transmits data to the BSC either directly using the Abis interface or
through the SNM board.

RFS Subsystem
Radio Frequency Subsystem (RFS) implements forward/reverse link
processing, which converts forward baseband signals into amplified RF
signals, and reverse RF signals to baseband signals.
RFS subsystem consists of following board types:

Transmitter and Receiver (TRX)

RF Management Module (RMM)

Digital Pre-distortion Power Amplifier (DPA)

PA Interface Module (PIM)

Radio Frequency End (RFE)

Block Diagram
Figure 9 shows the RFS subsystem block diagram.

ZXC10 CBTS CDMA2000 Compact Base Transceiver Station Hardware Manual

Note:
Above figure does not shows the PIM board. PIM board functions as a monitoring
unit, which collects the RFE and DPA running status information.

RFS subsystem performs the following functions:

RFS Forward link

Receives signals from the RIM board, performs D/A conversion,
filtering, median-frequency I/Q modulation, band pass filtering,
transmitting link gain control, signal amplification, and up-conversion
on forward data.

RFS Reverse link

Receives signals from the RFE, performs down-conversion, signal
amplification, band pass filtering, AGC, and median-frequency I/Q
demodulation on reverse data.

Note :
Chapter 2 describes the boards in detail.

Dimensions
Cabinet dimensions: 850 mm (33.46 inches) x 600 mm (33.46 inches) x
600 mm (33.46 inches) (Height x Width x Depth)
Mounting base Dimensions: W x D x H = 600 mm (33.46 inches) x 600

Power Supply
CBTS cabinet can support AC or DC power supply input.

If power supply is AC, then an additional AC to DC converter cabinet is

required. ZTE provides the AC to DC converter cabinet (PWS cabinet).

If power supply is DC, connect directly to the power interfaces located

at the CBTS cabinet top.

Provide CBTS with uninterrupted power supply (diesel engine generator

set and storage battery), so that it can work normally in case of main
power supply failure.

CHM0
CHM0 board is based upon ASIC chip (QUALCOMM CSM5000) and supports
CDMA2000-1X Release A service.
CHM0 board provides the following basic functions:

Completely
supports
modulates/demodulates
requirements.

CDMA2000-1X
RTT
standard,
and
baseband
signals
based
on
system

Provides CCM board communication interfaces, including media stream

interface and control stream interface.

Forward link converts voice frames distributed from the CCM board
through the Ethernet interface into a standard format required by
the baseband processing chip. After baseband processing such as
convolution coding, element repetition, interleaving, WALSH
orthogonal spread, long code scrambling, PN code complicated
orthogonal expansion, and QPSK modulation inside the baseband
processing chip, baseband signals are output to the RIM board
based on system configuration of carrier and sector.

Reverse link receives antenna data distributed from the RIM board,
performs processing opposite to that of forward link, such as
demodulation, and converts them into voice frames. After CPU
processing, CCM board receives them through the ethernet
interface for switching.

At most, the CHM0 board supports 512 forward (Channel Element) CE

and 256 backward CE.

CHM0 board supports CDMA2000-1x baseband processing in nearly six

sectors.

It supports remote board software download, remote soft reset control

and remote power management.

Multiplexing/demultiplexing unit multiplexes the forward baseband
signals into high-speed signals. It demultiplexes reverse high-speed
signals into baseband data formats.

Control unit
Control unit decodes and controls board peripherals.

Clock unit
Receives and distributes GPS clock required by each board component.

CHM1 board has two external 100 MB Ethernet interfaces, for media
and control streams.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 69

ZXC10 CBTS CDMA2000 Compact Base Transceiver Station Hardware Manual

Provides CCM board communication interfaces including media and

control stream interfaces.

Forward link converts CCM board data frames through forward CPU
into a standard format required by CSM5500. After baseband
processing such as convolutional coding, element repetition,
interleaving, WALSH orthogonal spread, long code scrambling, and
PN code orthogonal expansion, baseband signals are output to the
RIM board based on carrier-sector configuration.

Reverse link receives data distributed from the RIM board through
the baseband data interface. Reverse baseband processing part
converts them into voice frames. After reverse CPU system
processing, CCM board receives frames for switching through the
Ethernet interface.

Supports the CHM0 mixed insertion.

At most, supports 192 forward CE and 96 backward CE.

CHM0 board supports CDMA2000-1x EV-DO baseband processing in

nearly three sectors.

OIB
OIB is a RMM6 subunit that provides optical/electrical conversion channels
for exchanging data between the RFS and BDS subsystem.

Principle and Functions

Reverse signals (From RMM6 board)

Receive reverse signals from the RMM6 board.

By using multiplexing chip, the OIB subunit multiplexes reverse

parallel data into a pair of serial differential signals.

By using an electrical/optical converter, it converts serial line

electrical signals into optical signals.

Send optical signals to BDS through the optical interface.

Figure 44 shows the OIB subunit reverse transmission block diagram.

FIGURE 44 - REVERSE SIGNAL TRANSMISSION BLOCK DIAGRAM

Forward signals (FROM BDS)

Receive forward optical signals from the BDS.

By using an optical/electrical converter, it converts optical signals

into a pair serial line electrical signal.

By using demultiplexing chip, the OIB subunit demultiplexes a pair

of serial differential signals into forward parallel data.

Send forward parallel data to the RMM6 unit.

Figure 45 shows the OIB subunit forward transmission block diagram.

GCM
GCM board generates synchronous timing and frequency reference signals.
It receives signals from the GPS/GLONASS satellite system, extracts and
produces 1PPS signals and navigation messages. In addition, it produces
PP2S, 19.6608 MHz and 30 MHz signals and relevant TOD messages using
1PPS signals as the phase-locking reference. GCM board works in
active/standby mode, and provides suitable interfaces for GPS/GLONASS
receiver unit.

Principles and Functions

GCM3 and GCM4 perform the same functions.
CBTS provides mutual backup between the GPS clock and circuit clock in
the circuit area. If E1 or fiber link fails, the GPS 1PPS signal provides
timing reference clock to maintain system operation. MCU uses algorithm
and compensation mechanism to meet system clock requirements.

Principle and Functions

Different types of DPA principle and functions are almost same.
Figure 58 shows the DPA block diagram.
F I G U R E 5 8 - D PA B L O C K D I A G R A M

Different DPA units perform the following functions:

Gain compensation circuit unit

Receives RF signals from TRX unit, stabilizes the RF amplification link
gain against the environment temperature change.

RF amplification link subunit

Amply the RF signal power. RF amplification circuit is cascaded in three
or four stages to meet gain index requirements. Its operation process
is as follows: Small RF signals firstly amplified by the ERA-5SM and
then by the MHL9838 and QPP016. The attenuator improves power
amplifier input standing wave and adjusts amplification link gain. The
ring connected to output protects the DPA from output load change.

Circulator unit
Protects amplifier tube, and calculates RF output port SWR.

Detection circuit unit

Converts sampled RF signals and temperature inside the DPA unit to
DC level signals. RF detection circuit is composed of the following
components:

Power splitter

Coupler

Amplification circuit

RF power detection chip

Peripheral circuit

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 137

ZXC10 CBTS CDMA2000 Compact Base Transceiver Station Hardware Manual

Power splitter and coupler couple RF signals and provide coupled

signals for the detection circuit.

Monitoring circuit unit

Monitors DPA running status, and reports the related alarms to TRX
unit.
DPA board generates an alarm in the following cases:

138

DPA board generates component failure alarm if any component

inside the DPA unit is faulty.

DPA board generates standing wave alarm if the antenna feeder or

RF cable becomes faulty. In addition, it also generates standing wave
alarm if the antenna feeder or RF cable is loose.

DPA board generate an excess temperature alarm if temperature is

high inside the DPA.

Lightning Arrester
Lightning arrester efficiently prevents lightning strokes that may lead in
through the base station feeder. A 1/4 short-circuit lightning arrester
employs 1/4 short-circuit principles and has a coaxial cavity inside the
protector. It is similar to a short circuit in parallel with the coaxial
transmission line. Its one end connects to the core and the other to
ground. For thunder current, it is similar to a 1/4 metallic conductor
directly short-circuited to the ground for lightning protection.
