Jeff and Marci moved to Sun City Festival in July 2013, from Davis, California.
They wanted to retire away from the snow, and after looking at most of the over55 retirement communities in Arizona, they selected Sun City Festival because of
the quality of homes, the newness of the community, and the fitness amenities.
As residents of Sun City Festival, Jeff is the founding president of the Festival
Swimmers Club, and swims laps on most days. Jeff is chairman of the safety
committee for the Pottery and Ceramics Club, and he belongs to the Metaphysical
Club. Marci is focusing on painting and clayarts, and is learning to swim. Marci
belongs to the Fine Arts Club, the Festival Swimmers Club, and Pottery and
Ceramics Club, and the Metaphysical Club.

With all of todays technology and knowledge, the process of human aging is
still somewhat of a mystery. While we know a lot about the results of aging,
we dont clearly know the cause(s). Theories of the causes of aging include
cellular damage due to free radicals and ongoing chemical reactions, accumulation of DNA mutations, or that humans have a programmed biological clock
designed to last only a certain period of time.
Despite the mystery of the causes of aging, we clearly know its effects. The
heart becomes less efficient and cannot pump blood as effectively. Our blood
vessels become less elastic and are less able to carry blood and open and
close effectively. We lose muscle mass, bone mass, brain cells, and balance
skills. All of these losses lead to physical inactivity and contribute to hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, obesity, osteoporosis, and diabetes.
While father time may bring only bad news, exercise and a healthy lifestyle
provide good news. Exercise is the best tool we have to slow down, and in
some cases, reverse the aging process. Whats more, we know exercise
specifically helps so many of the challenges brought on by aging.
Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise helps reduce
blood pressure, control weight and lowers
cholesterol. Taking many forms, aerobic exercise
includes brisk walking, swimming, cycling, and
hiking. At a minimum, aerobic exercise should
be done three times per week for 20 minutes
each time. Ideally, aerobic exercise lasts 30-60
minutes and is done most days of the week.
Strength/weight training helps maintain bone
density, muscle strength and mass, and minimizes risks of falls. Strength training should be
performed 2-3 times per week, making sure to
have a rest day between sessions. This rest day allows muscles to rest and
recover. The necessary amount of weight or resistance varies with each
person. Appropriate resistance will require a struggle (honest effort) to
perform 12 consecutive repetitions of an exercise. The goal is two sets of 12
repetitions separated with 60 seconds rest.
Stretching is important to maintain muscle elasticity and joint range of motion.
Stiff, tight muscles are prone to pulls and tears and make movement difficult.
Stretching should be performed after exercise without bouncing. Each stretch
should be held for about 30 seconds with mild to moderate tension.
Maintaining health and fitness is critical to slow the aging process and keeping
the body functioning at its peak. Always consult a physician prior to starting
exercise and gradually increase amount of exercise over time.
