Dear Parent/Guardian

th

A Level English Language Student Conference in London: Thursday 12 February 2015

The English Department is arranging a trip for AS and A2 students to see and hear many famous
names in English Language. The conference is very popular and is always oversubscribed. The
timing is perfect coursework will be nearly finished and students will be starting to think about
exam topics.
The highlight will be:
Professor David Crystal, author of countless books on the
English Language and spokesperson on all things language.
Crystal always talks with humour and wit about new
developments in language - an antidote to all those who tell
you that texting is making students illiterate! Hell be speaking
about Pragmatics: The Final Frontier. He is available
afterwards for book signing.
We are also excited about the other great speakers for this years event:

Professor Deborah Cameron, speaking about gender stereotypes (a key AS topic)

David Marsh, on The Sounds of Syntax

Chief Examiners, discussing the Texts and Contexts aspect of the exam, and finally

Akala performing Hip Hop Shakespeare

It will be an action-packed day. There will be language activities and a dedicated blog in the
weeks prior to the event. Students can get directly involved by submitting questions in advance.
It will be a very rewarding event. One student even said that it had inspired her to study English
Language at University!
