MEAM110: Homework #2 - Due Fri. Sept. 12, 2014

Portion of Homework Assignment on MasteringPhysics (due at 8:00 am on the due date):
See the Mastering Physics Website: http://www.masteringphysics.com
Hand-in Problems. These are due in lecture, at the beginning of class on the due date. If
you are coming from a prior lecture far away, you must have permission from Prof.
Carpick in advance, in which case you can hand in the HW 5 minutes after lecture starts.
Otherwise, your HW will be considered late and will be penalized by 20%. After 24
hours, you get a zero on the HW. So hand in what you have, on time.
For peace of mind, complete and hand this in earlier to Dr. Carchidis office, 208 Towne
slip it under the door.
For full credit show all steps. You must use a systematic problem solving approach, such
as the ISEE method. Examples using ISEE have been posted on Canvas consult these
examples closely.
Please note:
- Write your name and recitation number on the top of the front page
- Make sure your name is clearly written on the top of each page
- Use 8.5 x 11 paper
- Do not rip paper from notebooks (i.e. the left edge of the paper should be clean)
- Staple all sheets together do not fold them together
- Box, underline, circle, or highlight your final answer to each part of a problem
- Final answers should include units. You can avoid errors by carrying units
through your calculations
- Use proper number of significant digits see the textbook for guidance
- Write clearly and in an organized manner. It is hard to give proper partial credit to
messy HW
1. [20 points total]. An object moves along a line with position x versus time t according
to the following equation:
3
!
= 2sec ! + ! ! + 5!! ! + 2 ! !! +
1 + ! !
where t0 is a constant with units of time.
(a) [10 points] Find an expression for the instantaneous velocity vs t.
(b) [10 points] Find an expression for the instantaneous acceleration vs t.

2. [50 points total]. Consider Figure 2.9 in the textbook. Assume that the values
(t [s], x [m]) on the graph are as follows:
P: (1.0, 1.0)
Q: (2.0, 2.0)
R: (3.0, 0.0)
S: (4.0, -1.0).
(a) [10 points] What is the average velocity attained between the origin and point P,
the origin and Q, the origin and R, the origin and S, and between P and R? For
each answer, indicate if your answer is exact, or is an estimate, and explain why.
(b) [10 points] What is the instantaneous velocity at the origin, and at points P, Q, R,
and S? For each answer, indicate if your answer is exact, or is an estimate, and
explain why.
(c) [10 points] What is the instantaneous acceleration at the origin, and at points P, Q,
R, and S? For each answer, indicate if your answer is exact, or is an estimate, and
explain why.
(d) Sketch a plot of the instantaneous velocity vs. t [10 points], and the instantaneous
acceleration vs. t [10 points]. Be sure to use values you determined from part (b)
in generating your plot
