PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
It is hard to believe that the holidays are here, and that 2014
is coming to a close. Each year, Dunn Loring Woods
transforms itself into a Winter Wonderland for the holidays
its truly a sight to see.
There are many activities happening over the next few
months to help get you into the holiday spirit, including a
cookie exchange, holiday decoration contest, and even an
opportunity to purchase a White House ornament and
support our local high school. More information on these
opportunities is included in this issue.
A big Thank You to Syracuse Circle residents who handled
the DLWCA Neighborhood Watch duties for the month of
Oct. These residents have been doing this each Oct. for a
number of years and serves as a great example of service to
the DLWCA community. How about other DLWCA
blocks matching the Syracuse Cr. contribution? Its a good
way to get to know your neighborhood and provide a
valuable community service and requires little time.
Individuals are also always needed for this important
program. Please contact Mark Hann (703-489-9463)
(mghann@verizon.net) or Ken Quincy (703-573-7919)
(ken_quincy@hotmail.com) for more information and if you
are interested in participating.
I hope that you have a safe and joyful holiday.

BOWLING GREEN ISLAND UPDATE

November/December 2014

WHITE HOUSE ORNAMENT SALE

Please consider purchasing a 2014 White House Ornament
from Marshall High School which will help fund the All
Night Graduation Celebration (ANGC) for our Class of 2015
Seniors. This lock-in event will help to underwrite an
alcohol and drug-free celebration at the Spring Hill
Recreation Center on the evening of graduation. In the past,
the event had a remarkable 90% participation rate by each
graduation class and continues to keep our seniors safe and
off the roads the night of their graduation.
Decorated with gold tones and enamel finishes, the 33rd
annual White House Christmas Ornament makes great
holiday gifts as well as memorable corporate gifts for clients.
You can order ornaments online at www.gcmptsa.org. For
more information, please email who@gcmptsa.org, or call
Patty at 703.362.9553.

AGING IN 2014

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

According to the Administration on Aging, the older

population, persons 65 years or older, numbered 41.4
million in 2011. It is predicted that by 2030 there will be
about 72.1 million older persons in the United States. Those
are staggering numbers and give everyone something to think
about.
Whether you are aging yourself, or are caring for aging
parents or grandparents, there is always a sense of worry in
thinking of who will be able to care for you or your loved
ones. There are many struggles that accompany the constant
care that is necessary when crisis hits, and you and your
family take on the responsibilities of elder care. The stress
does not only drastically affect that of the person in need of
care, but the family as well. Prioritizing parents' care can ease
their pain and worry, but might impact your own family life,
health, time and resources. Whether companionship, daily
care or simply transportation is necessary, everyone is
affected by the difficult changes. Though the situations may
differ from family to family, the end goal is to help our loved
ones remain independent, have a continued sense of
importance, encouragement and love.
In the United States alone, in 2009 a census was completed,
recognizing that over 25.7% of the population is of the age of
65years or older. Over the past five years that percentage has
risen and is predicted to continue to rise as years go by. Due
to these statistics, there will be an increased need for
attention to the elderly in our community and continued help
to those families beginning the journey of caring for their
aging loved ones.
Joanne McCarty is a Geriatric Care Manager who works in
Fairfax.

Currently, 44% of the Residents in Dunn Loring Woods

have joined the Civic Association. Our Goal is 85% and I
believe it is within reach.
Thanks to all the Block Captains that have completed the
canvassing of their appointed homes.
We do have a few Captains trying to wrap up their routes. If
you have not been approached by someone personally, had a
brochure left in your door or by mail please feel free to stop
by my home at 2545 Villanova Court with your $15.00
check.
Thank you in advance for helping the Board to reach our
goal of 85%.
