Introduction

The ADA iBase 2.0, iBase eXtender, and iBase WP (Wall Plate) are designed to permit your
Apple iPod to play through, and be controlled by, an ADA multi-room system. These systems
include ADAs Suite 8x8, Suite 16 and Suite 8000 Receivers. The ADA iBase System is designed
specifically for iPod 3rd generation and above units, including the iPod Touch. Users can
control and navigate the iPods music database from ADA keypads, making it easy to select
music (or audiobooks) by playlist, genre, artist, album or song (or audiobook). You can also
navigate the video playlists on newer iPods. The iBase 2.0 works with all ADA keypads and
touch screens. To get the full benefit of the iBase 2.0 system, we suggest using the TS-5000
Touch Screen. The iBase, when used with the iBase eXtender and iBase WP will display iPod
information in real time on ADA keypads that feature a display.
When using an ISO-E (ADA Bus to Ethernet), ISO-CAT-II (ADA Bus to RS-232), or ISO-USB
(ADA Bus to USB) converter device, the iBase provides control and feedback to touchscreen
control systems. The iBase has several address settings that permit multi-line text feedback
specifically for touchscreens. When using both ADA keypads and touchscreens together in a
system, specific address settings can be used to provide feedback to both single line display
ADA keypads and multiple line touchscreen feedback windows.
The iBase with the optional iBase eXtender and the iBase WP can be used in any number of
different installation scenarios. Also, multiple iBases can be used in a single installation (up to
eight). Finally, the iBase can also be used on its own as an attractive and functional docking
base for the iPod family of music players.

The 10 pin iBase eXtender port (RJ-50

connector) provides DC power, ADA
Bus communication and balanced
audio in a single wire, which affords
neat installations. Using the RJ-50
port allows the iBase to be placed long
distances (tested up to 600 of Cat. 5
wire) from the main equipment rack
while maintaining audio quality and
remote data control. When using the
iBase in this manner, the ADA iBase
eXtender and iBase WP (Wall Plate)
accessories must be used. The iBase
eXtender should be placed at the audio equipment end of the wiring run,
converting the balanced audio back to
unbalanced audio (RCA jacks) and the
control data to ADA Bus data.

Whats New in the iBase 2.0 System

Setup Options
Authentication for video works on all current models except the iPhone. Video browsing is now supported from keypads, touch screens and control systems.
When using an iPod with video, the iBase 2.0s video output configurations permit the
selection of either the component or composite video output, 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio,
and fit or fill screen options.
Docking setting allows the iBase 2.0 to begin in Auto Dock mode (automatically engages
keypad control) or Manual Dock mode (iPod control) when the iPod is first inserted into
the iBase. The user can still toggle between these two modes by pressing the Control
Mode button on the iBase 2.0. Both this and the video configurations are set using
the 2nd (new) rotary address switch on the iBase 2.0.
Metadata and Navigation:
Touch screens and keypads which feature an alphanumeric pad, permit users to advance to an alpha or numeric character. The words The or A are ignored if the title
or artist name begins with these two words.
ADA keypad feedback for the single-line 12 character window now scrolls up to 50
characters (was 24) of album, artist, title and navigation metadata.
While in NAV (navigation) mode, multi-line controls will display the current choice on
the top line and the following three choices on the multi-line feedback below.
Once a song is selected, NAV database will track that level unless Shuffle is on or a
different navigation level is selected.
Podcasts are now a top level category (previously under Playlists).
New Address Options:
Address 0 - Provides single-line scrolling text at 1200 baud. All characters are UPPER CASE
permitting the iBase 2.0 system to be incorporated into legacy ADA Bus systems featuring
keypads with segment LED displays (MC-3000 series keypads). Use Special CD 1 address.
Addresses 1-8 - These correspond to Special CD Addresses 1-8 and provide both scrolling
single-line and multi-line text feedback. These addresses operate at 19,200 baud.
Addresses 9, A, B, & C - These correspond to Special CD Addresses 1-4 and provide only
multi-line text. When using non-ADA keypads, bus traffic is minimized by eliminating the
single-line text. These addresses operate at 19,200 baud.
Addresses D, E & F - These correspond to Special CD Addresses 1-3 and provide only scrolling single-line text for MC-4500, MC-5000, MC-5500, MC-6011, MC-6011 and all outdoor ADA
keypads. Bus traffic is reduced for systems with only these keypads by eliminating the multiline text. These addresses operate at 19,200 baud. Use addresses 1-8 when incorporating
with systems containing MC-7000, TS-8611, TS-5000 controls.

Setting the iBase Lighting Mode

The inner button on top of the iBase
switches between the light display modes
that illuminate the plexiglass against which
the iPod sits. You can create two different
lighting setups - one for when the iPod is
docked and one for when it is removed from
the iBase.

Light Mode Button

Set when iPod is
undocked.

When removed, there are eight settings.

You can select one of seven solid colors or
off.
When the iPod is on the iBase, there are
twelve settings; four audio controlled modes
(light organ), seven solid colors, and off.
Each time you press the Light Mode button
it changes to the next mode.

Light Mode Button

Set when iPod is

Your selection is stored in nonvolatile memory so it will illuminate the same way each
time the iPod is on the iBase or removed.
If you select one of the audio controlled modes while the ipod is stopped, paused, or playing
a quiet track, the plexiglass wont illuminate. The audio controlled modes change in color
based on the audio level, like a color organ. The first two audio controlled modes have fixed
filters to control the colors (different colors assigned to different frequencies) with two different modulation rates (slow light show or fast light show). The second pair of audio controlled
modes are randomized (progressive color changes independent of frequencies) with two different modulation (speed) rates.

The iBase 2.0 features two rotary switches with sixteen

positions labeled 0-9 and A-F. The one on the left sets
docking and video settings and has nothing to do with
addressing. The one on the right sets the address for
the iBase 2.0. Both of these are described in the chart
on the following page. To ensure proper communication
with ADA keypads and/or touchscreen control systems,
the address you select must match the source control
settings of the keypads and/or touchscreen control
system. It is extremely important that both the
iBase and the iBase eXtender be set to the exact
same address at all times.

012

iBase 2.0 & eXtender Addressing

ADA Keypad Text Displays - The iBase transmits the first 50 characters of text information generated by the iPod. ADA keypads that feature a 12 character display require text
feedback to be sent in strings containing 12 characters. If a data field (status, song, artist,
album, playlist, genre or audiobook) contains more than 12 characters, the keypad will scroll
all characters (up to 50) across the display once, then rest on the first 12 characters. When
displaying multiple data fields, the fields display one at a time. There are eight Special CD
address options permitting up to eight iBases to be included in a single installation. Please
note that with each additional iPod/iBase on the system, you will need an additional iBase
eXtender. Also, as the systems data traffic will increase, you may notice a slow down in
control and feedback operations.
Touchscreens - The iBase displays all four data fields (status, artist, album, song) at once.
Touchscreen feedback is limited to 16 characters per field and does not scroll text.
Combination Addresses - For systems using both ADA keypads and touchscreens, there
are eight address options that will provide data to both at the same time.
Control Codes - The control codes are the same for keypad or touchscreen settings. As
such, if you are controlling the iPod via the iBase from a touchscreen and are not getting
any feedback, try the same Special CD address number using the alternate feedback option
(instead of four line, try single line).
Legacy ADA Keypad Systems - Legacy ADA Bus systems typically operated at 1200 baud
and used segmented LED displays that only represent capital letters. For these systems,
you can use one iBase set to address 0. Here the iBase will generate only capital letters and
communicate at 1200 baud.
Settings for Docking mode and Video outputs - This switch involves 4 options - docking
mode, video output signal, aspect ratio and screen fill/fit. The switch has 16 settings (0-F)
so that only one setting has a specific group of options (i.e. Remote, Composite, 4x3, Fill =
switch position 6). Note that if you are not connecting to the iBase 2.0 to a TV, then you only
have to determine if you want your iPod to go into Remote Control mode (0-7) or remain in
Manual mode (controlled by its on touch wheel or screen - 8-F any). If you are using the
iBase 2.0 as a stand alone dock and not incorporating it into an ADA system, then use the
Manual mode settings (8-F).

iBase Standalone & Video Installation

The setting of the ADA Bus Address
switch is unimportant. The setting
of the Dock/Video switch is very important as you want to make certain
that this switch is set to Manual mode
(positions 8-F). If you connecting the
iBase 2.0 to a 4:3 TV using a composite
video cable connected to the middle
(composite) video output, you must
use switch settings E or F. If you are
using a 16:9 wide-screen TV, you will
want to use settings C or D. ADA recommends trying the Fill or Fit settings
while viewing content from the iPod.

The iBase can be used as a standalone docking

station for the iPod. In this case, power, audio
and video (optional) connections are made directly at the iBase 2.0.

you must use switch settings 8 or 9.
If you are using a wide-screen TV but
want to format it in a 4:3 aspect ration, you will want to use settings A
or B. ADA recommends trying the Fill

5 cable is run between the iBase eXtender WP and the iBase
eXtender, wire the four balanced audio wires and the four con15VDC
15VDC
trol wires on the Cat. 5 cable.
In this setup, you can connect a
1000mA
1000mA
DC transformer directly to the
iBase. This option is ideal if the
XFormer
XFormer
transformer cannot be easily connected to the iBase eXtender
WP (wall plate). This wiring option does not power the iBase
off the ADA Bus.

iBase 2.0 PC Program

ADA provides an iBase 2.0 PC Program that is ideal for touch screen control interface developers. Essentially, this program has every available control function possible for an iPod docked
to the iBase 2.0. It also features feedback windows permitting developers to see the type
of text feedback generated while navigating the iPod in Remote Control mode. The program
features two tabs. On the configuration tab, one selects the COM Port or LAN option for
communication. For COM Port connections, the baud rate is typically set to 19,200 and CTS
is Ignored. You can also select the iBase 2.0 Address here. Finally, you can select to show
the View Commands and View Feedback windows. When double-clicking on the command
in the View Command window, you can copy the HEX code and drop it into your program.

The alpha numeric pad advances

to the first numeric/letter in
sequence. After selecting the
search mode (Artist, Album,
Song, Genre, etc.), pressing the
6 button for example, advances
the iPod to the first song beginning with 6. Repeated pressing
of this button goes to the first
M then N and then O. The
words The and A are ignored.
Once on a letter, >> and <<
scroll forward and backward.
