SECTION VII: PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

`
Goals

Objectives

Description of Evaluation

Goal 1:
Establish connections with the greater
library and education community by
involving all constituent groups in the
development, support, and use of the
library media program to improve
student learning and program function.

Objective 1a:
As a strategy for promoting
stakeholder involvement in
the ATES media program,
the SLMS will develop a
library advisory committee,
made up of at least one
member from each
stakeholder group (teacher,
administrator, student, and
parent) which will meet
monthly to discuss media
program use and function.
Committee members should
be appointed no later than
the end of the first quarter so
that monthly meetings may
begin.

Evaluation 1a:
Monthly meeting notes
will be submitted to the ATES
principal for his review.
A copy of meeting notes
will also be filed by the
SLMS in a designated Library
Advisory Committee
notebook to be kept in the
media center.

Objective 1b:
At the beginning of the year,
the SLMS will update the
school media center website
with up-to-date information
including media center
hours, links to stakeholder
resources, access to digital
resources, and library goals
and newsletters (after
second quarter). The SLMS
will update the website
weekly.

Evaluation 1b:
The ATES Library Advisory
Committee will use a rubric
created by the SLMS to
evaluate the function of the
media center website. This
evaluation will take place
after their first committee
meeting and will continue
quarterly. In addition, a
survey will be administered to
students, staff and parents
mid-year and at the end of the
year to evaluate the usefulness
of the media center website.
The survey will be available
in print and digital format.

Objective 1c:
Beginning second-quarter,
the SLMS and library

Committee will develop a

addition to providing a

the information provided in
the monthly newsletters.
Initial surveys will be
administered to the school
community at the end of the
second quarter; the survey
will again be administered at
the end of the year. Surveys
will be available in both print
and digital format.

Objective 2a:
In support of the ATES
Vision and Mission, the
SLMS will build staff
proficiency with digital
assessment tools by
providing at least one
professional development
opportunity per quarter
related to assessment
technology. These tools may
include, but are not limited
to: classroom response
systems, virtual corkboards,
and online polling.

Evaluation 2a:
After each quarterly
information session, the
SLMS will administer a
Ticket Out the Door
assessment asking teachers to
evaluate the effectiveness of
the digital assessment strategy
sessions, highlighting
information they found most
useful and addressing any
questions they still have.
Teacher feedback will be used
to drive future information
sessions.

Objective 2b:
The SLMS will attend at
least one grade level
meeting per quarter per
grade to collaborate with
classroom teachers on
creating rubrics for student
work that integrate
curricular, informational,
and critical thinking

Evaluation 2b:
The SLMS will maintain
thorough notes of all gradelevel meetings attended.
Copies of meeting notes, as
well as copies of all rubrics
created during these sessions,
will be kept in a designated

At the end of each quarter,
the Teacher Collaboration
notebook will be submitted to
the ATES Principal for his
review.
At the conclusion of a unit,
work samples will be
collected and added to a
Student Assessment notebook.
Grade-level teachers will
evaluate their experience
collaborating with the SLMS
through an informal
interview.
The SLMS and building
administrators will review
notes from the informal
surveys and work samples at
the end of the year.

Objective 2c:
The SLMS will utilize at
least two performance-based
assessment strategies per
collaborative unit.
Assessment strategies may
include, but are not limited
to: rubrics, checklists,
portfolios, journals,
observation, conferencing,
and self-questioning

Rationale for Established Goals:

Based on our survey results, the greatest needs for improvement are communication between all
stakeholders, collaboration with teachers and students, and promoting the library program
throughout the educational community.
.

Goal 1:
To address the need of improving communication amongst stakeholders, the media
specialist will utilize a variety of tools to keep students, teachers, parents, and administrators
informed about current happenings in the library. The first objective, implementing a library
advisory committee, lays the foundation for future communication objectives in which all
stakeholders will be involved in the development and evaluation of the media center website and
monthly newsletters. According to the Empowering Learners (2009) text, using a variety of
communication tools is one way the librarian can increase awareness of the school librarys
role (p.28). Hopefully, the variety of tools used to initiate communication, as addressed in Goal
1, will forge partnerships, keep stakeholders connected, and bring about positive change for the
ATES media program and school.

Goal 2:

The results of our stakeholder survey recently administered shed light on the fact that
ATES teachers would like more collaborative efforts made to monitor and assess students
progress. The Empowering Learners (2009) text emphasizes the importance of this collaboration:
Working collaboratively with the classroom teacher, the school librarian identifies benchmarks
and indicators to be addressed during a unit of study and determines what instruction students
need to achieve these goals (p. 28). Goal 2 was designed to intentionally address opportunities
for assessment collaboration, and to specifically highlight a variety of tools and strategies that
can be used to assess student performance.

Goal 3:
Our third and final goal was written to address the need for promoting available media
resources in a way that advocates for the safe, legal, and responsible use of information and
technology. Not only is it our job to promote new and exciting tools for teaching and learning,
but it is also our job to educate users about their appropriate use. According to Doug Johnson
(2013) in The Indispensable Librarian, [s]chools should be taking a proactive approach to
dealing with ethical issues surrounding technology use (p. 155). Taking this into consideration,

we developed three specific objectives that proactively address the need to create a technology
environment that clearly articulates, models, and evaluates ethical behavior.
