FACULTY OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

BFC32803 - REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN 2

Project instruction:
This project must be carried out by group of maximum four (4) members only.
This project contributes 20% to the coursework mark.
1.0 Introduction
New multi-story building for College of Structural and Design will be be developed in UTHM,
Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor. An area of 30 m x 20 m has been allocated for the development
purpose. As appointed structural engineering consultant, your team is ordered to prepare the
design and details of the building including a complete report of the following scopes:
a) Illustration of the building in three-dimensional.
b) Description of proposed building and details of project.
c) Layout of building for each floor, side and elevation views complete with location of columns,
beams and footings.
d) Analysis of design actions subjected to all probable combinations of loads.
e) Frame analysis, design of columns and foundations.
f) Detailing
g) Discussion and a clear recommendation of the design.

2.0 Details of the project

a) Site: The proposed building will be constructed in UTHM, Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor.
The location can be considered as sub-urban area with flat topography, slope < 0.05 and
dense terrain. Other information can be referred in the figure below.

All variables and permanent actions must follow the recommendation of Eurocode.
However, any relevant assumptions can be made to calculate the wind action.
The number of story is five (5) with maximum height of floor is 3.6 m. First two floors
and the latter three floors must be designed in the separated purposes (example: floor
1-2 as lecture hall while the rest are laboratory).
The dimension of beam and thickness of slab must be designed based on relevant
requirement for the multi-story building.
The distance between two columns must not more than 4m, or 7m if supported by
secondary beam.
Foundation to ground floor (stump) has height of 2 m.
The foundation must be designed according the soil condition in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat,
Johor.
Any relevant assumptions can be employed where ever necessary.

3.0 Report
a) Report should include all information/parameters, analysis, design and drawing of structure
and structure plan arrangement.
b) Computer drawings using a CAD system are highly encouraged. Illustration of the building
can be produced using Google Skethup
c) Frame analysis can be performed using civil engineering computer application such as
Staad.Pro, Esteem, SAP and so on. However, frame analysis under wind loading must be
conducted manually.
d) Analysis and design of specific structure should be conducted as scheduled, which is can be
referred in Part 5.0.
e) A compile report must be submitted upon completing the course. Report must be submitted
in Microsoft Word format (softcopy and binding version).
f) All drawing of layout and detailing must be produced and printed in A3 paper.

4.0 Assessment
The assessment of this project will be based on three concepts, cognitive, psychomotor and
affective. Brief criteria of the assessment are:
-

Structural system and idealization, concepts and assumptions

Plan and layout
Analysis and design
Detailing
Report and organization of report
Professionalism, ethics and creativity

5.0 Important date

If the project is submitted late without sufficient cause, a penalty shall be applied. A
deduction of 15% of the maximum mark available from the actual mark achieved by the
group shall be imposed upon expiry of the deadline. A further deduction of 5% of the
maximum mark available from the actual achieved by the group shall then be imposed of the
next subsequence days.
