DABCOMediated Regioselective Primary Hydroxyl

Protection of Carbohydrates
Bhart K. Gadakh, Premanand R. Patil and K. P. Ravindranathan Kartha*
Department of Medicinal Chemistry, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and
Research,
Sector 67, S.A.S. Nagar, Punjab-160062, India
Selective protection of the primary hydroxyl group in hexosides and nucleosides by bulky
acid-labile group like Trityl (Tr) is very widely applied in synthetic oligosaccharide and nucleoside chemistry. The conventional procedure involves use of environmentally unfriendly
solvents such as pyridine, DMF, etc. besides expensive catalysts/reagents such as DMAP
and triethylamine, N-trityl pyridinumfluoroborate and 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylpyridinium perchlorate.1-4 As a cheaper and environmentally friendlier alternative herein we report a simple, efficient procedure for the regioselective tritylation of primary hydroxyl of carbohydrates using trityl chloride in the presence of DABCO in dichloromethane (DCM). Thus,
when a glycoside substrate (for example, 1, Scheme 1) is reacted with trityl chloride (2 mol
equiv) in the presence of DABCO (2.0 mol equiv), regioselectively protected trityl ether
(for example 2 from 1, Scheme 1) was obtained in excellent yield. In addition, continuation
of the reaction in the presence of added Ac2O and catalytic DMAP led to the successful
acetylation of the remaining OH groups of the sugar. This one-pot two-step procedure will
be further discussed in the presentation to elucidate its wider applicability.

Welcome to the 29th Carbohydrate Conference:

CARBO-XXIX
Carbohydrates as predominant metabolic targets, transient or enduring storage
nutrients, structural and functional bioorganic constituents, etc. constitute a common
feature across the three kingdoms of life: microbes, plants and animals, and it could
not have been a mere accident! Such commonalities are not only of immense
significance in learning lifes various processes but are also opportunities for
expanding the diversity of uses of carbohydrates. Indeed, it may be possible to
perceive philo-sophically that metabolic network of lifes processes originate with
carbohydrates, or-ganizes through carbohydrates, diversifies with carbohydrates (for
multiple cellular/systems functions and processes) and are greatly governed
(functionally, physiologi-cally, etc.) via carbohydrates.
Apart from forming a subject matter for investigation for gathering information on their
role in lifes processes, carbohydrates have continued to offer, since antiquity, growing
opportunities for their use/practical applications. This trail of knowledge-translation for
beneficial applications, began from food, fibre and fuel and after traversing through
various industrial products such as paper and medicine has reached the field of biocomposites, smart materials, etc. Exploring and realizing these paths of opportunities
have been facilitated by develop-ment of processes and technologies built around
carbohydrates. These technologies may have originated from work rooted in chemistry
but had better impact on integration with biological and engineering approaches from
one or more perspectives. Thus, the chemistry and technology of carbohydrates can be
seen as an interesting platform for amalgamation of sciences.
Therefore, we cordially invite you to CARBO-XXIX to catalyze and promote this
inter-disciplinary scientific arena of carbohydrates by your esteemed participation in
this forth coming Carbohydrate Conference (29th in the Series): CARBO-XXIX.
Through this event, we seek your support and intellectual views on/inputs to the theme
ChemBio Innovations for Bioproducts at the conference. We wish to enrich the
scientific colloquium through your participation and sharing of views on experienced as
well as young talent presentations on the subject.

About Mohali
Mohali is a rapidly growing town just across the road to Chandigarh, the City Beautiful. In
fact, Mohali (Punjab), Chandigarh (Union Territory) and Panchkula (Haryana) are not only
geographically next to each other but are also scenically so similar that one does not feel
any discontinuity in the beauty, openness, system and facilities while driving through. It is
no wonder therefore, they are together referred to as the Tricity. Mohali, after its fame for
the global cricket competition venue (Mohali Cricket Stadium) is acquiring many new fame
points. For scientists, academicians, scholars and students it is a cluster of national institutions of learning, research, technology and business, etc. These include IISER, ISB, INST,
NABI, CIAB, NIPER, IMTECH, PGIMER, PBTI and the Biotech Park. The togetherness of
these institutions of higher learning is reflected in the formation of a common platform
under the umbrella of Chandigarh Region Institutions Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) that also includes some of the other pride institutions of the region such as Panjab University,
CSIO, PEC, NIITR, TBRL, GMCH and IIT Ropar.
Mohali and its surroundings offer an excellent and exciting tour and entertainment opportunity of life time memory. To mention a few, besides the best shopping experience, are the
Rock Garden, Rose Garden, Sukhna Lake, Morni Hills, Pinjore Garden and the Golden
Temple at Amritsar. For hill tourism, Shimla, Kasauli and Kufri are close by.

How to Reach Mohali: Mohali is well connected by rail, road and air. This connectivity is
largely served through Chandigarh (from New Delhi). Besides the rail and air connectivity
through Delhi (about 250 km), some direct trains and air services from Chandigarh Railway
Station (about 20 km from CIAB, Mohali) and Chandigarh Airport (about 30 km from
CIAB, Mohali) are also available.
Weather: December end is winter season in this region and the weather conditions are similar to those in Delhi during these days. Expected minimum and maximum temperatures are
8 C and 15 C, respectively. Sufficient warm clothing is recommended.

Accommodation
Chandigarh is one of the best places to have an excellent hotel stay experience and a variety
of hotels to suit to the visitors plans, budget and liking are available. Limited accommodation in guest houses would be attempted on applicable charge-basis, subject to their availability. As per availability, this would be served on the first come, first served basis. Twinsharing of the guest house facility is also an option open to us.

Registration
The registration fee for the conference will cover the cost of conference material, attendance
of the lectures/discussion, tea/coffee and food during the conference.

The request for registration should be submitted in the form provided herewith or by e-mail
