FIBER REINFORCED GLASS MATRIX
COMPOSITES WITH SECONDARY
MATRIX REINFORCEMENT
Tredway William; Musson Craig W; Chen Otis Y;
Manchester, CT, UNITED STATES assigned to United
Technologies Corporation
A fiber reinforced glass matrix composite has a glass matrix
or glass ceramic and a plurality of primary and secondary
reinforcing fibers dispersed in the matrix. The primary
fibers may be continuous or discontinuous. The secondary
fibers are discontinuous. The secondary reinforcing fibers
which are shorter than the primary fibers fill regions of the
matrix not filled with the primary reinforcing fibers. The
composite may be made by uniformly distributing the
secondary reinforcing fibers in a dispersant. A glass powder
is mixed in a carrier liquid to create a slurry and the
secondary reinforcing fibers and dispersant are slowly
added to the slurry so the fibers uniformly disperse as they
are added. A binder is also added to the slurry. A
continuous fiber is impregnated with the slurry and the
impregnated liber is dried to remove the carrier liquid. The
impregnated yarn is cut to a suitable length and molded by
a suitable molding method to form a fiber reinforced glass
matrix composite.

COMPOSITE INSULATOR AND ITS
MANUFACTURING METHOD
Hayakawa Koji; Kashiwagi Hiroshi; Handa, JAPAN
assigned to NGK Insulators Ltd
A composite insulator includes a FRP core rod and a sheath
which is formed by integrally molding an insulating
polymeric material to cover the core rod over substantially
the entire length thereof. The sheath is composed of a
plurality of molded portions which are aligned with each
other in the axial direction of the core rod. Adjacent molded
portions of the sheath are arranged relative to each other so
that a gap is left between the opposite ends of the molded
portions. The gap is filled by a joint insulating material
which is integrally united to the polymeric material of the
adjacent molded portions.

A method of manufacturing a composite material which
comprises ceramic fibers in a matrix of a ceramic material.
A woven mat of ceramic fibers having an electrically
conductive coating thereon is immersed in a sol. The sol
comprises surface-charged ceramic particles. A potential
difference is applied between the fibers and a second
electrode placed in the sol. The applied potential difference
is continued until the mat is permeated by the ceramic
particles in the sol. The mat is removed from the sol and is
then heated to sinter the permeated ceramic particles.

PADS PARTICULARLY ADAPTED FOR
AIRCRAFT/TRUCK/TRAIN/ AND OTHER
HEAVY DUTY APPLICATIONS
Atmur Steven; Strasser Thomas E; Riverside, CA, UNITED
STATES assigned to Northrop Grumman Corporation
A structural fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite
material adapted for high temperature brake use is disclosed
as used for the entirety of components of a brake system and
as brake pads which can be used in the normal manner for
brake pads. Also disclosed is a method of integrally
molding the brake pads to the surfaces of metal brake parts.
