Current Research and Background:
I am working as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW),
Center for Marine Science (CMS), Aquaculture Program from May 2005. Before coming to UNCW, I had
spent about 8 years in the Lab of Aquatic Animal Nutrition, Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University,
Japan and completed my Masters, Ph. D. and JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Major: Aquaculture
Nutrition). I have completed executive MBA in May 2007 from the Cameron School of Business, UNCW
sponsored by the MARBIONC (Marine Biotechnology in North Carolina). Presently, I am involved with
MARBIONC Aquatic Animal Nutrition, an aquaculture nutritional research and feed development
program under the CMS, UNCW and collaborating with other scientists in several project funded by
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), USDA and North Carolina Sea Grant. My
main research and publication focuses on finfish and crustaceans nutrition and feed technology. I have
presented several papers in some national and international aquaculture and fish nutrition related
conferences in USA, Japan, Australia, China, Greece, Thailand and Malaysia. My research interest is
development of nutritionally balanced, environmentally sound and cost-effective diet for commercial fish
culture. My ongoing researches are alternative protein and lipid sources for fish feed, replacement of live
feed by formulated microdiet, optimization of macronutrient (protein, lipid and carbohydrates) in the diets
and their interaction, and supplementation of crystalline amino acids with plant protein based diets for the
maximum growth of black sea bass and southern flounder, two commercially important food fish in the
Southeastern United States.
