Black History Celebration

The theme for this years celebration night was especially significant as its the
100th Anniversary of the start of World War 1. 100 years together in War and
Peace was the focus of the event and it was important to promote and commemorate the immense contributions and
impact of soldiers from the former British commonwealth countries especially the West Indies and India where many of
our students roots lie. More than 4 million men and women from Britains colonies volunteered for service during the First
and Second World War. We at Kingsbury School and Sports College felt it was very important to highlight the sacrifices
made by these men and women and to commemorate their part in History on this very special and poignant year.
We were especially honoured to have renowned military Historian Jahan Mahmood who
kindly brought in his travelling collection of World War 1 and weaponry, artefacts, and
memorabilia to the library to show the students and community on the night. The students
were very impressed and fascinated by the powerful weapons on show including British
and Russian World War 1 rifles and rather scary World War 1 Gas masks.
The BHM celebration evening was another great success for the school and the
community. It was a fantastic celebration of the schools cultural diversity and an
evening that was enjoyed by all that attended. The diverse performances
included drama pieces which focused on the changing cultural face of Erdington
through the decades and an emotional play based on Rosa Parks devised and
acted out by Year 11 students. Moreover, the African and West Indian dance
routines all designed and choreographed by the students themselves were some
of the highlights of the evening. The student enterprise group held a raffle and
supervised a mehndi workshop which were very popular and there were a variety
of ethnic foods to enjoy. All in all an amazing night was had by all. Thank you
very much to the following for their very generous donations of raffle prizes for the
event: Smyth's Toy Superstore, Mobolicious, WHSmith's, Greggs , Boots and
parents of two Yr 11 students: Cameron Thompson & Ellen Ratcliffe

Ms ODriscoll

We are a school that is committed not only to helping

our students to achieve their potential but also to the
development of our workforce. Following a recent
Investors in People Assessment, KSSC has maintained
its impressive Investors in People (IiP) Silver award.
Investors in People is the national standard which sets
a level of good practice for training and development of
staff to achieve the goals of the organisation.
Assessor Pauline Price spent two days at the School
speaking to a wide section of staff before making her
judgement. Her report stated that 'Staff genuinely have
a desire to do their utmost for the students'... The
philosophy is one of 'what is best for the student and
helping them to reach their full potential'. The final
report
also
outlined
that
'everyone
is encouraged to develop leadership capabilities', and
this is in line with our philosophy for students too.
The assessment included taking consideration of areas
such as Learning and development; People
Management;
Leadership
and
Management;
Involvement and Empowerment; Performance and
Continuous Improvement etc. Commenting on the
positive feedback, Ms ODriscoll, Head Teacher, said: "I
am delighted in the result for the School which reflects
the hard work staff put in to ensure that our internal
processes meet the current standard. The formal report
is extremely positive and gives us hope that we can
soon apply for and achieve the Gold IiP
standard. School will address the development issues
indicated in the report in the spirit of continuous
improvement. This is a very positive outcome for the
school.

Rainbow Scars

Students in Year 11 GCSE PE were given the

opportunity to
see a professional dance
performance live at the Midlands Art Centre. As part
of Black History Month and their 'Afrovibes: Mana/
Dark Cell' collection,
Miss Milward

On 23rd October 2014 our year 11 drama students

visited the Midlands Arts Centre in Cannon Hill Park
to watch a performance of Rainbow Scars. The
show was set in the era of reconciliation when
Nelson Mandela encouraged South Africans to reach
out and touch each others lives. The purpose of the
theatre visit was to facilitate part of their GCSE
course in which they have to evaluate a live
performance and write a 2,000 word essay. It was a
enjoyable evening and after the show the students
were able to meet and chat with the actors (Jennifer
Steyn, Kertrice Maitisa, Mbulelo Grootboom) from
Artscape Theatre Centre about the characters they
portrayed in a post-show discussion.

I really enjoyed going to see this performance

because it was something different that I had never
seen before. It made me more open minded as to
how emotion and props can be used within a dance
performance. It gave me inspiration and numerous
ideas for different dance pieces that I can now use in
my GCSE PE and various other performances. It
was great for showing diversity and culture. The
dances that were performed gave out very strong
messages and stories and definitely captured the
viewers attention with ease. It was a great
experience and was extremely useful to my dancing.

Heres what you need to be safe:

A white front light (this can be flashing or static)

A red rear light (again, flashing or static)

A red rear reflector

Amber / yellow pedal reflectors front and rear on each pedal.

Shane Dives Deep

On Saturday 25th October, 12yr old Shane Hyland from the

Pype Hayes area of Birmingham, a student at Kingsbury
School & Sports College, achieved the highest possible
accolade, Master Scuba Diver, that can be awarded to a
recreational diver within the PADI system. This he has
achieved in just 128 days from qualifying as a Junior Open
Water Diver.
Given that Shane only did his first dive on 21st June and qualified as a diver on 22nd June 2014, this is quite
a spectacular achievement, especially for one so young. To attain this recognition, Shane has had to
continue his dive education by completing his Advanced Open Water & Rescue courses as well as
complete 5 specialty courses covering a range of diving techniques & disciplines and complete 50
dives. Shane, however, has not spent all his time completing courses. He has joined in dive trips to St Abs
in Scotland & the Farne Islands in Northumberland, as well as diving in Egypt whilst on a family holiday.
To achieve his ambition, Shane has been seen on a very regular basis at Dosthill Quary & occasionally at
Gildenburgh Water. Such is his personality that he quickly endeared himself to Ian Forster (Owner of both
dive sites) and Instructors Louise Priest, Barry Kislingbury & Pete Stewart who have all actively worked with
& encouraged him achieve his goal.
When not diving Shane can be seen helping out at the dive centres undertaking the essential duty of
Surface Cover, ensuring that divers are booked in & out of the water & safely accounted for.
Shane is very fortunate in having massive support from his parents.

Red, White, Blue Day

As part of the Black History Month Celebrations, the Humanities
department hosted the Red White Blue Day competition based on the
theme 'Why is it important to Remember WW1 100 years on? Students
entered some wonderful entries including posters, art work, poems and
letters.
The winning students were announced at the Black History Month
celebration evening. In first place was Jade Vaughan of Ravenhill,
creating an art piece with magazine cuttings demonstrating the power and
impact of war on others. She won a 30 love to shop voucher.
Second place was Adam Hussain of Burkitt, who drew a dramatic pencil sketch of a soldier with his
comrades accompanied by a short piece of writing. He won the prize of 20 love to shop vouchers. In third
place was Batoul Abu-Affar, also of Ravenhill. She created a wonderful art work piece of a remembrance
wreath. It was wonderful to see so many students demonstrating their respect when remembering the
soldiers who fought in World War 1 through these creative pieces. Well done to all the students who took
part!
Miss Masters & Mr Hussain

Bartok Uncovered
The trip to symphony hall to see 'Bartok Uncovered' was amazing, it
really showed us how famous composers put their pieces together;
for the first half they talked us through the 5 parts of the piece of music, this made us see how important each note and instrument really
was and how they all played a significant part.
The second half the CBSO played the piece of music all the way
through, We got to hear each instrument and we even got to see the
part our instruments played within the performance.
I found it amazing to see how so many people can be in time with
each other and for all of them to be organised by one person. The
performance was inspiring and made me want to carry on with music
in the future.
