why certification is important

The certification of plant stocks is vitally important to fruit growers and is essential for the supply of healthy material. We are fortunate in
England and Wales in having the benefit of the best certification system in Europe, The Plant Health Propagation Scheme (PHPS) which is
administered by the NSA and run by FERA who carry out independent inspections of all entered stocks.
The basic principles of this scheme are:
That the site must meet rotational and isolation requirements
Every mother plant is inspected twice during the growing
season by trained inspectors
That the parent material is derived from virus indexed
pedigree stocks and meets the scheme specifications
Any suspect plants are sent to the laboratory for further testing
No disease masking pesticides are allowed (especially
There are published tolerances for any non-quarantine pests
relevant to Blackspot and Raspberry Root Rot)
and diseases which must not be exceeded

..
.

.
..

Certification is a genuine safeguard but it is not a guarantee

PHPS - Certified Stock
research and
Virus Tested Pedigree Mother Plants are produced by
the Nuclear Stock Association (NSA) at East Malling by
testing for all important viruses, pests and diseases
using a full range of PCR and graft based tests. This
Virus Indexed material is then used by commercial
propagators to produce Elite and A Certificate plants
for sale.

Plant Passport

development

In order to be able to offer all our customers ever better varieties we need to
invest and support non-proprietary breeding programmes. R. W. Walpole Ltd
are actively involved in the East Malling Strawberry Breeding Club, the UK
Raspberry Breeding Consortium at JHI and the Hansabred Gmbh & Co Ltd
European breeding initiative at Dresden. In addition our commitment to
Meiosis offers us the opportunity to work with the leading breeding
programmes from around the world.

When the most stringent requirements of PHPS are not

met Rubus and Strawberries are inspected once only by
FERA against a much reduced set of criteria in order to
meet the EU Plant Passport standard.

PHPS - Approved Health

When a variety is first released and before pedigree

material is available from the NSA we offer stocks that
have been entered and inspected at the Approved
Health Grade. This grade is part of the PHPS and uses
the same criteria as the A Certificate Grade with regard
to the health of the stocks but offers no safeguard with
regards to trueness to type.

Vibrant produces beautifully shaped, uniform, conic

berries which are medium to large in size and with
virtually no Class II fruit. The berries are glossy,
brilliant red in colour and are carried on strongly
erect, long, flowering peduncles. Vibrant was bred to
give a high 60-day yield by producing a large number
of flowering trusses in succession thus cropping over
an extended period. Each truss carries only 4 to 5
flowers thus maintaining a larger fruit size (72% of
the Vibrant crop exceeded 35mm compared to 56%
for Elsanta in the Hoogstraten trial). Maincrop yields
have been consistently good and have normally
exceeded 1kg per plant. Picking speeds are
exceptional due to the good presentation of the
berries and the fruit is easily handled and packed
being firmer than both Clery and Elsanta. Flavour is
excellent and Vibrant was the top rated selection for
flavour in the HDC Substrate Trial in 2011.
A genuinely early variety with a 50% pick date at
least seven days ahead of Elsanta. Picking
commenced in Suffolk under plastic on 22nd April in
2011 and in Kent on the 15th April 2012. The plants
are moderately vigorous with good resistance to
Powdery Mildew and Crown Rot but are susceptible
to Verticillium Wilt. A second crop can occur if the
crop has been forced and up to 400gms of good
quality fruit can be produced from July onwards.

Snow White
In response to the renewed interest in white strawberries
the lead breeder at Hansabred, Dresden, Dr. Klaus Olbricht
has released a new and much improved white strawberry.
Snow White is a vigorous selection, much higher yielding than existing white fruited
varieties, producing attractive, medium sized, uniform and conical berries. This
selection is June-bearing, ripening mid-season, is winter hardy and has excellent
disease resistance/tolerance. The flavour is characteristic of white fruited strawberries
being very aromatic with a unique fresh fruit flavour reminiscent of pineapple.

Christine

Sweetheart

Christine is an early season variety cropping

some 5 days ahead of Elsanta and responds
particularly well when covered with fleece. The
berries are large, bright, orange-red and easily
picked. Class I percentages are good with few
small or misshapen berries. Fruit quality is
excellent and in an HDC trial Christine was
recorded as the firmest variety with high skin
strength and little bruising. Flavour is excellent
with good levels of sugar. This variety will give
three full crops when grown on a traditional
matted row and is the only early variety that is
resistant to Verticillium Wilt; it also has good
resistance to Mildew and is untouched by Two
Spotted Spider Mite.

Bred at East Malling Research, this elegant selection is another outstanding variety
that can be successfully grown without high input costs. Cropping at the same
time as Elsanta, Sweetheart has attractive berries which are uniformly conic, larger
and slightly darker than Elsanta, with good skin strength. Sweetheart is far less
susceptible to bruising than Sonata and is easy to handle in the packhouse. Brix
levels are higher than Elsanta and the flavour is very pleasant with a good balance
of sweetness and acidity. Yields well in excess of 6 tonnes per acre and Class I
percentages in excess of 90% have been achieved from commercially grown, open
ground production, over a long picking season. 60-day yields are modest. The
variety has a compact but vigorous habit, with a denser canopy than Elsanta but
with well displayed fruit. The variety has reasonable resistance to Powdery Mildew.
Sweetheart is susceptible to Crown Rot but appears to be tolerant to Verticillium
Wilt under field conditions.

Honeoye
Cropping 4-6 days ahead of Elsanta and
producing attractive, conical, orange-red fruit.
Fruit firmness is slightly below the standard set
by Elsanta and the berries have a tendency to
darken. Honeoye is susceptible to Verticillium
Wilt and needs frequent picking to produce the
best results.

Certified Stock : 155 per thousand

Sonata

Certified Stock : 155 per thousand

Released by Fresh Forward in Holland. Sonata is an Elsanta Polka cross that has rapidly become the most widely planted
June bearer in the UK.
Sonata produces a very high Class I grade out of attractive,
uniform, conical berries that are bright and glossy with
superior flavour and texture compared to Elsanta. The variety
is not susceptible to splitting but is not quite as firm as Elsanta
and is more sensitive to bruising and ripens quickly in hot
weather. Overall yield is less than Elsanta but Sonatas Class I
yield is superior. The variety crops five days later than Elsanta
under tunnels and two days later in the open. Sonata has
good resistance to Powdery Mildew but is susceptible to
Verticillium Wilt, Rhizoctonia and Crown Rot, the latter
needing careful management.

Elsanta

Elsanta is still one of the UKs most important varieties thirty-two

years after its initial release by the Dutch breeders. Superb fruit
quality and excellent shelf life make this the supermarkets
favourite. Susceptibility to fruit splitting and malformation, a
compact picking season and poor disease resistance, particularly
to Verticillium Wilt and other soil-borne diseases, limit the
profitability of this variety in many situations. The medium to
large, firm, orange-red fruit are the varietys greatest asset.
Susceptibility to Two Spotted Mite and Powdery mildew also test
the growers competence.
Fresh dug plants are available from mid-September through to
mid-April. Bench graded cold-stored plants are offered from
January until end June.

large crowned plants with excellent disease resistance.
Marshmello was selected on the basis of its superb flavour and
large fruit, although too soft for some uses this variety has been

Elegance

Hapil is a large, vigorous plant producing a heavy crop of

very large, bright, glossy mid-season fruit. The easily

appeal to the PYO customer. Susceptible to Verticillium
Wilt.

High yielding, Red Core resistant maincrop.

Bred and selected at East Malling Research by Dr. David

varieties to be released by that programme. Outstanding
60-day performance, fruit quality, shelf life and yield make
this an exceptional selection.

Elegance was named after its elegant, bright and glossy berries which
are orange-red in colour and uniformly conic. The berries are firm and
hold on the plant for several days with no darkening in colour. The fruit
is easy to pick and pack with no susceptibility to finger bruising and with
exceptional shelf life. Elegance has a sweet strawberry flavour with a
pleasant juicy texture. The berries are well displayed with virtually no
Class II fruit resulting in impressive picking speeds. Elegance was
specifically bred for good 60-day yields and its performance in trials has
been superb. Elegance was the highest yielding variety of the 19 trialled
by the HDC (project SF92a) on Mr George Busbys farm in 2010-11. At
Tongeren in Belgium, Elegance topped the 2011, 2012 and 2013
Maincrop Trials where the varietys yield and exceptional shelf life created
real interest. Elegance has been the highest yielding variety on our farm
when grown without protection for the last four years.

Bred at East Malling, Alice is a main season selection

producing bright, firm and attractive berries with a sweet
flavour and juicy texture. The variety does not perform well
as a 60-day plant but subsequent yields surpass those of
Elsanta. Alice has good resistance to Verticillium Wilt and
to Crown Rot.

Malwina produces glossy, dark red, firm berries that have a lovely
aroma, exceptionally high Brix readings and a really excellent
flavour. The berries are large to very large with over 85% of the
crop exceeding 35mm in diameter. The variety is self fertile and
very late, cropping 10 days later than Florence. Yields are less
than Elsanta. The berries have a good tolerance to rain and are
further protected by a vigorous leaf canopy. Regular picking is
recommended to maintain fruit firmness. Malwina is robust,
hardy and vigorous, it is resistant to Mildew, tolerant to
Verticillium Wilt, Crown Rot and Red Core and shows only a
limited susceptibility to Botrytis. Nitrogen fertilizer should be
applied carefully and sparingly to avoid excessive vegetative
growth. The variety needs to be protected against Blossom Weevil
and Thrips.

Symphony

Bred at The James Hutton Institute (JHI) (formerly SCRI),

Symphony is a well established late season variety with a 50%

regular and glossy with good flesh and skin firmness and a
pleasant, slightly acidic flavour. Maincrop yields are excellent; the
variety has good field resistance to Red Core and some tolerance

Production peaks midway between Elsanta and

Florence with a season similar to Symphony. The
variety produces a lush, vigorous plant with a
compact, upright habit and long trusses,
displaying the fruit well. Fenella has very good
resistance to Verticillium Wilt and to Crown Rot
and the fruit stood up to the torrential rain of the
2007 and 2012 seasons.
This unique combination of disease resistance,
vigour and rain tolerance allows for the reliable
production of good quality, low cost, unprotected
fruit for a full range of marketing outlets.

Exceptional yield, superb disease resistance and large attractive

berries have made this one of the most widely grown varieties in
Europe with over 15 million plants sold annually. The berries are
sweet with a particularly good flavour but darken if allowed to
become over-ripe. Florence is resistant to Crown Rot and most
leaf diseases including Powdery Mildew and has good tolerance
to Vine Weevil and Verticillium Wilt. Florence is a late season
selection with a prolonged picking season and a 50% pick date
12 days later than Elsanta.

Cupid is one of the most interesting varieties to emerge from East

Malling Research in that it is the only selection to carry
commercially useful levels of resistance to four major diseases,
namely Verticillium Wilt, Crown Rot, Black Spot and Powdery
Mildew. This variety crops at the same time as Florence and
produces a high yield of attractive, uniform, conic berries with
good skin strength and shelf life. The fruit remains firm with no
finger bruising even under the hottest conditions. Cupid is a
vigorous variety and produces a good leaf canopy that is effective
in protecting the fruit from adverse weather. This variety should
be tried where disease problems normally limit yield.

Bred and selected by Dr. David Simpson at

equal to the best mainstream June bearing varieties.
Yields have been similar to, or higher than, Everest in
trials to date with 1.2kg per plant recorded in 2007 at
EMR and 50% of the crop greater than 35mm.
Picking commenced in week 26 and peaked at week
31 a few days later than Everest but significantly
ahead of Flamenco.
This variety has been extensively tested at EMR and
has shown good resistance to Verticillium Wilt and to
Crown Rot. As a consequence Finesse has excelled
when planted into the soil including when secondhand
beds and bags have been used. Plant vigour is good
and runnering is limited.

raspberries

R. W. Walpole Ltd offer a full range of raspberry varieties which includes the very best floricane and primocane
selections available to the commercial grower.
Planting healthy cane is crucial to the success of your crop. In order to achieve the highest possible standards of
health we restrict our propagation to sites which have never previously grown raspberry and, wherever possible,
our stocks are entered and inspected under the Plant Health Propagation Scheme (PHPS). Our Certified Stock
are grown from virus tested parent material supplied by the Nuclear Stock Association (NSA) and sourced from
JHI or Naktuinbouw (NAKT).

We recommend

1. Planting Dates - We strongly advise customers to wait until the leaves have dropped in the autumn before

planting. November and December are the ideal planting times for raspberries but good establishment can also be
obtained in early spring. Later planting is less reliable and we cannot take responsibility for the performance of fresh
canes supplied after 1st March.
2. Cold Storage - Customers wishing to take delivery after 1st March are requested to contact us to arrange
for the short-term cold storage of their canes which will be charged at 3.50 per week per thousand canes. Please
note that cold-stored canes are slower to break bud than those held at ambient temperatures.
Charges - The prices quoted in this catalogue apply to quantities of 250 canes or more for an individual
variety. We are pleased to supply smaller quantities across our range but, unfortunately, need to charge an
additional 25/1000 to cover the additional handling and packaging costs for orders between 50 and 250
canes. Orders of 50 cane or less are subject to our Small Order price list which is available on request. Any
payment made by Credit Card will be subject to a 2.0% surcharge.

Long and Standard Cane

Elite Spawnbed - Narborough, Norfolk

Bare Root Cane: standard & long

Bare root field grown cane are graded, tied and labelled in the field and supplied cut back to a
length of approximately 40cm. All long cane are lifted when fully dormant and bench graded to
ensure uniformity and quality. If required long cane can be root wrapped and packed ready for
storage in lined bulk bins at a charge of 40 per 1000 cane inclusive of the cost of the bin. Long
cane will be invoiced when put into the cold store.

Potted Plants

Using our own certified root and heated beds we are able to supply potted plants in either 104 or
60 cell trays as required for delivery from early April onwards. These plants are recommended for:

Root

The use of root to establish fruiting plantations of raspberry has been

pioneered in Europe by Driscolls and is now a widely accepted
technique. All established varieties are available as root and rates of
225-250Kg/hectare (200-220lbs/acre) are recommended. Where root
is being used to establish individual pots an approximate rate of 60gms
per pot is recommended. Roots are washed before despatch and can
be held long term at -2oC. All root supplied carries a PHPS certificate.

Main Season: Listed in order of cropping

Glen Fyne

Early Season: Listed in order of cropping

Glen Moy

A superbly flavoured mid-season selection from JHI with real

potential to supersede Tulameen as the premier quality floricane.
Bred by Nicki Jennings of MRS, Glen Fyne produces firm, bright,
cohesive berries that are attractively coloured and comparable in
size and shelf life to those of Glen Ample. Glen Fyne commences
cropping three days earlier than Glen Ample, continues for a longer
season and has consistently out yielded Glen Ample and is easy to
pick. The variety produces exceptionally fine flavoured, aromatic
fruit throughout its long season and when subjected to professional
sensory profiling was ranked superior to all other selections
including Tulameen.
Glen Fyne is moderately vigorous, producing long and strong spinefree canes with close internodes suggesting that the variety has
potential as a long cane. The berries are well presented on strong
laterals and the canes are easily managed.
LISTED BY SAINBURYS

Glen Moy commences picking in mid-June and produces

medium sized (4gms), well displayed, reasonably firm berries
with good flavour. Yields can be very good. The variety is only
moderately vigorous and good soil and plant management is
needed to extend its effective life. The canes are spine-free,
erect and resistant to the main aphid vector; Glen Moy is very
susceptible to Root Rot.
Certified Stock: Standard Cane: 495 per thousand

Malling Minerva
Bred by Vicky Knight at EMR, this high yielding reliable variety is,
in our opinion, the best early season variety currently available.
Cropping a few days later than Glen Moy but one week ahead
of Glen Ample, Malling Minerva is spine-free with an easily
managed compact plant habit and produces erect new canes in
the centre of the row. The berries are well presented to the
pickers on medium length, ascending laterals, and have an even
and attractive conical shape. The fruit is firm with a good colour,
flavour and shelf life. The medium to large berries are similar in
size to those of Glen Moy but the size declines in the second half
of the season. Disease resistance is excellent but the variety is
susceptible to Raspberry Root Rot. Yields in excess of 3.7kg per
stool were recorded in trials at JHI in 2010.

Glen Fyne

NB: Glen Fyne is susceptible to Raspberry Root Rot and needs to be

grown on clean sites under protection with careful management
including routine fungicides. Where Raspberry Root Rot is a problem it
is recommended that the variety is grown in substrate.

Glen Ample

Glen Ample is a mid-season summer fruiting spine-free raspberry

raised at JHI. The variety has produced exceptional yields of firm
fruit in trials and has established new standards in raspberry
production. Glen Ample produces large fleshy fruits of about
4-5gms, which are round-conical in shape, attractive and with an
excellent flavour. The fruit 'holds' well on the cane resulting in
significantly reduced picking costs. The 50% pick date is some 10
days later than Glen Moy but with a considerably longer picking
season. The variety is spine-free with very upright canes. Spawn
production is prolific making cane number control essential. The
fruiting laterals are upright and present the fruit well. Glen Ample is
susceptible to aphid transmitted viruses, Root Rot, Spur Blight and
Cane Rust. Yields can decline over time when husbandry conditions
are less than ideal.

Glen Lyon
An early season variety from JHI cropping a few days later than
Glen Moy, Glen Lyon produces very glossy orange-red fruit of
medium size and excellent firmness and shelf life. The variety
has good resistance to Spur Blight but is susceptible to aphidborne viruses. Glen Lyon is a very heavy yielding variety when
grown on fertile soils with good management. Preferred variety
for early season protected cropping.

Glen Rosa
Tulameen
Glen Rosa is a high yielding, mid-season, spine-free
cultivar picking 10 days later than Glen Moy but
with a longer season. Bred at JHI, Glen Rosa
produces high quality, brightly coloured fruit of
medium size (3-5.5gms) with good shelf life. Good
disease resistance including RBDV. Ideal for organic
or low input production.

Cascade Delight

This mid-season variety picks over a long period and produces attractive, glossy
fruit with a distinct conical shape and excellent flavour. The berries are large
(5-7gms), firm and cohesive. Tulameen has few spines and produces easily
managed canes of up to 2 metres. It is susceptible to Root Rot and cane
disease but superior to most other varieties with regard to Botrytis. These
canes are derived from the German Stock which was identified by the recent
HDC Trial as having superior fruit shape and cohesion.
Certified Stock
Standard Cane: 475 per thousand
Long Cane 1.2m+: 735 per thousand

Selected by Dr. Pat Moore of Washington State, USA.

Cascade Delight produces high yields of very large,
very firm, fruit. The berries are glossy, with a long
conic shape, easily detached and with an excellent
flavour. The variety picked over a 46 day period in the
HDC Trial at Oxford in 2012 and was the highest
yielding selection in that trial. The season is similar to
that of Tulameen but the berries are firmer and 20%
larger, averaging 5gms throughout the season in the
2012 HDC Trial.
The variety is vigorous with long fruiting laterals
which benefit from a support system and produces an
adequate number of primocanes. Cascade Delight is
slightly spined with most of the spines located on the
basal portions of the cane. It is susceptible to the
Large Raspberry Aphid, which is the vector for
Raspberry Mosaic Disease complex and to Raspberry
Bushy Dwarf Virus. American trials have shown field
resistance to Raspberry Root Rot and this has
been supported by UK growers over the last four
growing seasons.

Bred by Vicky Knight at EMR, Octavia has made the biggest impact on the UK
raspberry industry since the release of Glen Ample, and is named after the
Roman month of August. Its commercial potential derives from the combination
of a very late season with high quality firm fruit of excellent flavour.

The berries are large, uniform, firm and easily detached. Fruit size is similar to, or larger
than, Tulameen averaging 6.6gms per berry in Scotland last year. The flavour is pleasant
and the colour good, if a little dull. Detailed tests at EMR East Malling have highlighted
the varietys excellent shelf life, yield is excellent with 3.3kg per stool recorded by JHI.
Listed and accepted by all the major multiples.
Octavia is a moderately vigorous, thorny selection producing upright, leafy laterals with
well presented fruit. Bud break is good and the variety crops to the base of the fruiting
canes. Susceptible to Root Rot. Resistant to biotypes 1-4 of the large Raspberry Aphid,
Cane Botrytis and Cane Spot. The 50% pick date of Octavia has consistently been 11 to
12 days later than that of Glen Ample. Octavia has exceptional winter hardiness and
survived -30OC in Poland in the 2006/7 winter.

Glen Magna

The dark red berries are of excellent size, ranging from 4g to 7g and have intense
colour, excellent flavour and score highly on visual attractiveness. The season is at least
7 days later than Glen Ample. Glen Magna carries few spines and the canes are upright
and vigorous, frequently exceeding 2 metres in height. Disease resistance is excellent,
the variety is resistant to RBDV with some tolerance to Raspberry Root Rot.
Recommended for PYO situations and where vigour is at a premium.

East Malling Research have an enviable reputation for

raspberry breeding and the last variety to be selected
by Vicky Knight before her retirement, Malling Juno,
is now available. The release of this promising early
selection has been delayed due to a low level of virus
in the initial stock which has now been eliminated.
A very early season selection. Picking
commences at the same time as Glen
Moy but the condensed season gives a
50% pick date five days earlier.
Firm, medium to large, cohesive berries.
Attractive mid-red colour similar to Glen
Ample with a good, sweet flavour.
Spine free, reasonably vigorous, easily
handled cane. Laterals are of medium
length and strongly attached.
Good disease resistance but susceptible
to Raspberry Root Rot.

Autumn Treasure

Himbo-Top

EU PVR: Var. Rafzaqu

This variety has large, very bright, attractive and

cohesive berries weighing 6-8gms. The fruit is
well displayed on long, strong laterals, is easily
detached, has good flavour and does not darken
after picking. Individual canes are strong with few
spines.
The primocanes of this variety can be very tall
(1.8m) and require a good support system. When
grown in the open Himbo-Top reaches peak
production in late September - early October and
a month earlier when grown under protection.

A good quality mid-season primocane from the EMR

programme, Autumn Treasure produces large (3.5-5.0gms)
conical, cohesive berries that have an attractive, bright
colour. The fruit is firm with a pleasant flavour and plugs
easily at an early stage of ripeness. Picking commences
slightly later than Autumn Bliss and the 50% pick date
varies between 26th August and 8th September in Kent.
The canes are strongly erect, self supporting and spine free.
Autumn Treasure is resistant to Verticillium Wilt and
Powdery Mildew and is highly resistant to Raspberry Root
Rot. Autumn Treasure withstands adverse weather
conditions better than other primocane. Recommended for
organic and low input growing systems.

Joan J
Joan J is a high yielding, large fruited primocane selection
from Medway Fruits. It is an early season selection,
commencing picking at end July/early August, similar to
Autumn Bliss, and cropping for a seven-week season. The
variety crops heavily in the first half of its fruiting period.
The berries are 30% larger than Autumn Bliss and are both
brighter and firmer. Flavour is superb. Fruit weights are
typically 6gms and yields of 6-7 tons/ha (2.3 - 3 tons/acre)
should be anticipated. The fruit freezes exceptionally well
without any increase in acidity that occurs with most other
varieties. Daily picking is recommended to optimise the
performance of this variety as the fruit tends to darken and
soften if left too long on the plant.

Autumn Treasure

Autumn Bliss is the first primocane variety to crop

from the end of July through to the first frosts in
October, overlapping in August with the late
varieties Magna and Octavia and producing most
of its fruit in September. The fruit is medium
sized, typically 3.3gms, mid to dark red with a
pleasant flavour and a good shelf life. Fruit size is
maintained well throughout the season. The
short, erect, spiny canes of this variety need only
the minimum of support and perform best on
sheltered, irrigated sites. Autumn Bliss is resistant
to Raspberry Root Rot.

firm and have an outstanding shelf life. The fruit is uniform, attractively
coloured and easily picked. Imara is less prone to darkening than Polka but
does need picking on a regular basis. The variety is vigorous and strong
growing, producing branched canes with small, unobstructive spines. No
significant problems have been identified to date with pests or diseases.

of Class I fruit to that of Imara. The berries are an attractive orange-red
and do not darken after harvest. Kweli has an exceptional shelf life being
the firmest of the ABB varieties. The berries are large (averaging 5gms),
well flavoured and easily picked. The variety is vigorous and produces well
branched canes with no evident pest or disease problems to date. Kweli has
performed particularly well in the UK trials in 2012 when grown under
polythene and glass and has consistently produced a high quality product
that has been well received by the customer and will be planted more
widely in 2013. Kweli is suitable for double cropping and is capable of
producing a significant and very early floricane crop. Well managed
substrate crops have produced fruit that have equalled the top floricane
varieties for flavour throughout the season.

slightly acidic when picked under ripe or grown in
cool climates. Yields in trials in New Zealand have
been outstanding and the variety has performed
well under commercial growing conditions in the
UK. Karaka Black is one of the earliest high
qualities available. Picking commences in early July
and extends until mid-August. The variety produces
canes of moderate vigour and although spiny are
reasonably easy to manage. Spacing of 1m is
recommended.

Loch Tay

Main Season: Listed in order of cropping

Loch Maree

Bred by JHI, Loch Tay is the second major selection to emerge from
the breeding programme that produced Loch Ness and is now
widely planted in both the UK and Europe. Three weeks earlier than
Loch Ness and with significantly better flavour Loch Tay is rapidly
becoming a preferred variety by the multiples particularly Waitrose.
Fruit firmness is comparable to Loch Ness but the berries are slightly
smaller at 4.5-5gms average. The variety has a semi-erect thornless
habit similar to Loch Ness, but with significantly improved vigour and
better resistance to Downy Mildew.

Bred by JHI, Loch Maree is semi-erect, thorn free and

vigorous. This selection is earlier than Loch Ness and
produces moderately firm, attractive berries of a similar size
to Loch Ness but with a markedly superior flavour. Yields are
very good and have been consistently better than Loch Tay in
trials. The variety produces unusual, pink coloured, double
blossom making it attractive for amateur use.
Loch Tay

LISTED AS A BETTER EATING VARIETY BY MAJOR MULTIPLES

Black Butte

Black Butte is an early season variety, ripening in mid-July and

producing attractive, well presented, uniform berries of good flavour
and exceptional size (over 11gms/berry). The variety is thorny and
the trailing canes are vigorous and winter hardy. Black Butte has
particular appeal for PYO growers and those supplying specialist
local outlets.

Black Pearl

Asterina

Bred in Switzerland and the result of a cross between Loch

Ness and Chester. Asterina has exceptional flavour, even
when picked less than fully ripe and produces plenty of
primocanes for the following year. This variety is thornless
with a good level of vigour. The fruit is very large, bright and
shiny with an excellent blackberry aroma; the first berries
ripen in mid-July and picking continues over a prolonged
period. No particular susceptibility to pest or disease has
been noted to date.

Loch Ness
Black Butte

A thornless, trailing variety producing conic fruit of excellent flavour

and reasonable firmness over a short, 20 day picking season. Black
Pearl has superb processing characteristics and is machine
harvestable.

Cacanska Bestrna

Bred in Serbia this early season thornless blackberry variety is

remarkable for producing some of the largest fruit of any blackberry.
The berries average over 9gms in weight and can exceed 15gms.
The berries are shiny black, firm and with a sweet aromatic flavour
and are suitable for fresh, frozen and processed use. The variety is
very vigorous producing 4 to 5 semi-erect primocanes annually,
exhibits excellent tolerance to low temperatures and resistance to
pest and disease. Yields are high; mature, individual plants can be
expected to produce in excess of 4kgs.
30

Loch Maree

Cacanska Bestrna

This thornless blackberry, bred at JHI, produces a very high

yield of top quality fruit. The fruit is large, typically 5gms or
more, very firm and glossy black with an excellent flavour
when fully ripe. Yield is good with picking commencing in
early August and continuing until first frosts. Loch Ness has
good resistance to Purple Blotch and Botrytis but warm, wet
weather in June can highlight the variety's susceptibility to
Downy Mildew (Peronospora rubi). The inherent quality of
this variety and, in particular, its winter hardiness, make it
one of the best adapted for the northern European climate.
Loch Ness produces strong semi-erect and erect canes which
are a pleasure to train compared to other cultivars. On well
established plants, tip pruning of newly emerged primocanes
is recommended. Planting distances vary from 1.25m to
2.0m depending on soil fertility and irrigation.

achieve its full yield potential.

Chester

All hybridberry plants are offered at Plant-Passport grade only

Buckingham Tayberry

Bred in Maryland, USA, Chesters combination of high

quality fruit, excellent flavour and a late season has
resulted in its becoming one of the most popular varieties
in the UK.
Well presented, shiny black fruit of 5-6gms with an
attractive fruity flavour and superb shelf life are typical of
this variety. The berries do not soften or lose their
attractive shine under hot conditions. The picking season
begins in mid-August in the UK and normally continues
until the first frosts, although quality declines in early
October. The yield potential of this variety is unequalled.
The variety is extremely vigorous producing semi-erect
thornless canes. In our experience, Chester thrives on
heavy, non-irrigated soils. Disease resistance is excellent
with no evidence of Downy Mildew or Purple Blotch. Plant
spacings of 2.0m to 2.5m are recommended. Tip pruning
of newly emerged primocanes is essential.

The most exciting new hybridberry for many years - a tayberry

without spines. Buckingham Tayberry is believed to be identical in
every respect to the original Tayberry except for its spinelessness.
Strong canes, a high yield and uniquely flavoured fruit will make
this selection the first choice for growers wishing to offer their
customers something special.

Loganberry LY654
LY654 is the thornless clone of the best known of the
hybridberries. Its distinctive flavour and reputation make
Loganberry a popular addition to many PYO units. The fruit
ripens from mid-July and picking continues until the end of
August.

Tummelberry

Triple Crown

Chester

This Maryland bred variety is a semi-erect, spine free, late

season, quality blackberry and was selected as a
successor to Chester. The berries are significantly larger
than those of Chester at 6.5gms and have a bright shiny
appearance and excellent shelf life. Flavour is superior to
Chester and is considered to be the best flavoured of all
the erect, thornless types, although the fruit is a little
softer. Cropping commences towards the end of August
and continues until the first frosts. The canes are frost
hardy and vigorous.

A hybridberry from JHI, Tummelberry produces a very attractive,

large, rounded fruit with a bright red colour and superb flavour.
Picking commences one week later than Tayberry and continues
until the end of August. Yield, vigour and winter hardiness are all
good. Excellent addition for specialist PYO units.

Boysenberry
This thornless selection carries large round or oblong fruit,
purplish black in colour and with a characteristic, attractive
flavour similar to a wild blackberry. Drought resistant and hardy.

Tayberry

Oregon Thornless

Oregon Thornless or Evergreen Thornless is a very late

season, thornless selection with characteristic deeply cut
leaves that are carried throughout the winter. The fruit has
a good blackberry flavour and is of medium size with a
bright, shiny appearance. Now restricted to the amateur
market.

Triple Crown

32

Buckingham Tayberry

Blackberry x Raspberry hybrid bred by JHI, Tayberry produces

consistently higher yields than Loganberry and the fruit is large,
up to 5cm in length, deep red with an excellent flavour. The
cropping season is from early July through to mid-August and the
berries freeze well, making Tayberry an attractive choice for the
PYO grower. Resistant to Raspberry Root Rot.

gooseberries

Interest in gooseberries has grown in recent years and the crop is a success on most PYO units and is valued by the
amateur gardener. We have put together a comprehensive range of the best modern varieties and can offer one and
two year old bushes grown on our farm.

Early Season
Invicta - RECOMMENDED VARIETY

This vigorous, easily grown, high yielding variety is justifiably the most widely planted gooseberry variety. The berries are large, oval, smooth
skinned and ripen to a pale yellow colour. Flavour when both green and fully ripe is excellent. The growth is very vigorous, spreading and
thorny; the variety rapidly reaches its full potential as a bush and can be successfully grown on wires. Invicta has a yield potential double that
of Careless and has some resistance to American gooseberry mildew but is vulnerable to Phytophthora infection.

Rokula

An early, red dessert gooseberry producing dark red round fruit (average 9-9.5gms) with excellent flavour. Rokula produces a very compact
bush with a characteristic, slightly drooping habit and a typical yield of 1.5kg. Resistant to American gooseberry mildew and recommended
for growing as a hedge system on wires.

Mid Season
Pax - RECOMMENDED VARIETY

A virtually spine-free red dessert gooseberry. Bred at East Malling Research, Pax produces dark red fruit of medium size (7.4gms) and good
dessert flavour, with a similar cropping season to Careless. Yields in trials have averaged 1.7kg/bush. The plants produce occasional spines
on young wood. The variety is very vigorous and spreading. Pax is moderately resistant to American gooseberry mildew and Leaf Spot.

Brigitta

This is the earliest variety available and is widely used for very early forced crops as well as for producing early
outdoor rhubarb in February and March. In both situations the yield is not high but is compensated by the
earliness of the variety. The sticks are red at the base grading to green at the top, with good thickness and length
as the season progresses. Flavour is good. This variety must be ordered and planted before Christmas.
Uncertified: 100 per hundred crowns

The bush grows up to 180cm, it has stout

shoots and large glossy, green leaves. A very
early variety, ripening at the beginning of
July. The berries are large, light blue, sweetly
flavoured, gathered in medium sized clusters.

Duke

Growing to a height of 180cm with an open

habit and firm shoots Duke flowers late,
escaping most spring frosts. The crop is
consistent and heavy with large blue berries
growing in open clusters. Picking begins in
mid-July. The variety requires heavy pruning
to maximise yield.

Regarded as the best commercial variety

Bluecrop is resistant to spring frosts and
drought tolerant. The light blue berries are
large, firm and gathered in clusters, often
bending the bushes under the weight of
fruit as ripening starts at the beginning of
August.

Bluegold

This is a mid-late season variety. Fast

growing, medium sized bushes. Large, firm
and richly flavoured berries with good shelf
life, especially in CA. Recommended for
light soils.

Upright bushes grow to 180cm with fewer nutrition and soil

demands. This late season variety ripens towards the end
of August. The berries are large, firm, gathered in loose
clusters, very tasty and richly flavoured with a crisp texture.
The fruit retains its freshness well when kept in cold
storage.

Ozark Blue

A late season, vigorous and upright variety growing to 2m

in height when mature. The berries are large, averaging
over 1.8gms, with an attractive light blue colour and
outstanding flavour. Ozarkblue is a consistent and very
high yielding variety producing up to 6.8kgs (15lbs) of fruit
per bush on five year old plants. Listed by most multiples.

Mid Season
Victoria
A highly productive mid-season variety first introduced in 1837. This variety produces long, thick, red stalks of high
quality giving a high percentage of Class I product with excellent flavour. Victoria is high yielding and easy to grow.
Uncertified: 100 per hundred crowns

Late Season
Stockbridge Arrow
The variety of the connoisseur. Stockbridge Arrow produces the best quality rhubarb of any variety when grown
outdoors. The long evenly sized sticks are an attractive dark red and have a fine and delicate flavour when
cooked. Whilst this variety was bred for forcing it performs very well when traditionally grown and crops heavily
over a long season. Highly recommended where a quality product is required.

We have brought together a unique selection of fruit varieties that offer, above all else, superb flavour and will have
particular appeal to the gardener and lover of fine food.

Strawberries

This white-fruited strawberry is a very old form of Fragaria ananassa. This particular variety has
survived in France on account of its aromatic flavour and interesting colour and is closely related
to the Pineberry variety which was marketed by Waitrose in 2010 with considerable publicity. The
berries start off green and turn paler as they ripen to produce a sweet and juicy fruit with white
flesh studded with attractively coloured seeds. Anablanca has a memorable aromatic flavour
reminiscent of pineapple.

Anablanca

Cambridge Favourite

An early season, apricot coloured, summer fruiting raspberry from East

Malling Research. Bred by Vicki Knight, Valentina is an exceptionally high
yielding selection with a season similar to that of Glen Moy.
The berries are medium to large with a bright and attractive pink-apricot
colour. Flavour is good but the skin is soft and shelf life inadequate for sale
to the multiples. Carrying only a few spines, Valentina produces tall upright
canes and has excellent pest and disease resistance. Resistant to Raspberry
Root Rot. Recommended for amateur and PYO use.

Valentina

Approved Health : 650 per thousand

Bred in 1938 and nursed through the war as a numbered seedling, Cambridge Favourite became the most widely grown variety in the
1960s. Excellent disease resistance and a vigorous free runnering habit makes this an easily grown variety that crops heavily and reliably
under a wide range of conditions. The medium sized fruit hangs well on the plant but is too soft to stand much travelling. Still
unsurpassed as a processing variety and valued by the PYO customer.
Certified Stock : 120 per thousand

Royal Sovereign

Well over 100 years old this variety has always had
a reputation for fruit quality and was the most
widely grown variety from 1920 until 1960. Its
reputation has survived amongst knowledgeable
gardeners and it maintains a substantial and
enthusiastic following.

Glen Coe

This specialist variety is the result of a cross between a black raspberry and
Glen Prosen. The deep rich purple fruits have a waxy bloom and an
excellent intense flavour and, similar to the Black raspberries, makes superb
jams, sauces and wine. Mid-season with yields comparable to red
raspberries.
Glen Coe is a significant improvement compared to other black varieties in
being spine-free. The variety is vigorous producing a moderate number of
semi-erect canes from the stool and does not sucker like a normal
raspberry. Good disease resistance. This variety is extremely difficult to
propagate and availability is limited. This unique raspberry was bred by Dr.
Derek Jennings at JHI.

3. Prices
3.1 Except as otherwise stated under the terms of any quotation and specifically agreed in writing between you and us, all prices
are on an ex-farm basis and are as detailed on the Confirmation of Order. Where we agree to deliver the plants otherwise than at
R W Walpole Ltds premises, you shall be liable to pay R W Walpole Ltds charges for packing, insurance and transport and for any

4.4.2 Save as provided for in clause 4.1 above, you can have no further claim whatsoever against us under that Contract.
5. Warranties and Liability
This section sets out our warranties and liabilities and particularly the limits to our liabilities.
NB: The reason for these limitations of liability is that whilst we, and other propagators from whom we have purchased plants, have
taken all reasonable care and have managed our crops according to current accepted husbandry practices this does not guarantee
trueness to type in all circumstances nor freedom from pests and diseases. The price of our goods reflects these limits to our
liability. Anyone wishing to purchase plants with specific guarantees is invited to make their requirements known to the company
and we will, if possible, provide a quotation that meets these requirements.
5.1.1 When shown on our paperwork as PHPS certified, R W Walpole Ltd warrant that the strawberry plants and raspberry canes have
been grown and produced to FERA Plant Health standards and inspected and certified under the Plant Health Propagation Scheme
(PHPS). Details of the PHPS certification scheme, including the tolerances for visible signs of pest(s) and disease(s), are published
on the following website www.fera.defra.gov.uk/plants/plantHealth/phps.cfm and are available from R W Walpole Ltd on request. PHPS
grades Elite and A Certificate for both strawberries and raspberries are inspected and certified as true to type based on visual
assessment of botanical characteristics, but the inspections do not guarantee the identification of possible genetic mutations.
Material certified at the PHPS grade, Approved Health(AH), is inspected and certified as to health but not in respect of trueness to type.
5.1.2 When shown on our paperwork as UK Plant Passport Grade, R W Walpole Ltd warrant that the strawberry plants, raspberry canes
and other Rubus plants have been grown and produced to UK Plant Passporting regulations as inspected by FERA inspectors.
Details of UK Plant Passport Regulations including pest and disease tolerances are available on request from R W Walpole Ltd.
5.1.3 For all other plant material, the country of origin and relevant certification or passporting status, where applicable, is shown on our
paperwork. Full details of these protocols are available on request from R W Walpole Ltd. Plant material not eligible for EU Plant
Passporting Regulations or Certification, e.g. Rhubarb, blueberries, redcurrants etc is shown as uncertified and is not subject to any
official inspections.

5.4

The above warranty is given by R W Walpole Ltd subject to the following conditions:
5.2.1 The Company accepts no liability whatsoever for plant material not eligible for EU plant passporting regulations or
certification as it is not possible for the Company to guarantee the quality of such plant material.
5.2.2 R W Walpole Ltd shall be under no liability for latent diseases or latent defects which may be present but not detected by any
inspectors when inspecting plants under PHPS or any other certification or passporting scheme either in the UK or the
country of origin of the material, and such certificate or passport shall not be challenged in any subsequent test or inspection.
5.2.3 R W Walpole Ltd shall be under no liability in respect of any problem arising from wilful damage, negligence or failure to
follow the accepted tenets of good husbandry by you or any other party including the use of inappropriate fertiliser or
pesticide treatment applied to the plants, substrate, or soil in which the plants are growing.
5.2.4 R W Walpole Ltd shall be under no liability whatsoever if the total price of the Goods has not been paid by the payment due date.
5.2.5 The yield a plant will produce is dependent on many factors, many of which are outside of our control. Guidance on likely
yields and the timing of those yields in favouable conditions can be found in our brochure, and we are confident that the
goods that we supply are true to type, healthy and free from pests at the time of Delivery however, R W Walpole Ltd does not
guarantee the yield of the plants in any respect whatsoever. It is the Buyers responsibility to ensure that the Goods are
suitable for his particular purpose, and we cannot be held liable for any failure of the Goods to produce the expected crop.
5.2.6 Where a Laboratory test for any pest, disease or virus has been carried out by the Company or any third party on harvested
plants prior to delivery and found to be negative, this result shall be deemed to be conclusive and cannot be challenged by
any subsequent customer instructed tests.
5.2.7 Our liability to you shall be limited:
i) where the loss or damage, however sustained, is in respect of all the Goods delivered or collected, to the invoice price of
the Goods;
ii) where the loss or damage, however sustained, is in respect of part of the Goods, to the appropriate proportion of the
invoice price which that part of the Goods bears to the total invoice price of all the Goods. We shall not in any case be liable
for wasted expenditure, loss of profit, increased cost or any other indirect, consequential or economic loss, injury or damage
without limitation.
5.2.8 Under no circumstances will R W Walpole Ltd consider valid or be liable for any complaint relating to quality, pests, diseases
or other alleged disorders of plants supplied unless notified to us at Ivy Farm, Terrington St. Clement, Kings Lynn, Norfolk
PE34 4PX within 72 hours after Delivery and subsequently confirmed to us in writing within the next 48 hours either by post,
fax or email (upon confirmation of the message read acknowledgement). In the event of a written complaint,
R W Walpole Ltd has the right of access to your premises to inspect the plants and to take samples and to inspect and take
copies of your inspection records if relevant. Time is of the essence for the purposes of this condition.
5.2.9 Where a valid claim exists in respect of any Goods, based on any defect in the quality, condition or specification,
R W Walpole Ltd shall be entitled, at our own discretion, to refund to the customer the price of the Goods or to replace the
Goods. R W Walpole Ltd will have no further liability to the customer.
5.2.10 R W Walpole Ltd does not hold Product Liability Insurance. All customers should hold their own insurance for consequential loss.
5.2.11 The warranties given in these terms and conditions apply to the Customer and cannot be assigned without our written agreement.
All warranties, conditions and other terms implied by statute or common law (save for the conditions implied by section 12 of
the Sale of Goods Act 1979) are, to the fullest extent permitted by law, excluded from the Contract.
5.3.1 Nothing in these conditions excludes or limits our liability:
a) For death or personal injury caused by our negligence; or
b) Under section 2(3), of the Consumer Protection Act 1987; or
c) For any matter which it would be illegal for us to exclude or attempt to exclude its liability; or
d) For fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
5.3.2 a) Our total liability in contract, tort (including negligence or breach of statutory duty), misrepresentation, restitution or
otherwise, arising in connection with the performance or contemplated performance of the Contract shall be limited to the
Contract price; and
b) We shall not be liable to the Customer for loss of profit, third party claims, loss of business, increased costs or depletion of
goodwill in each case whether direct, indirect or consequential compensation howsoever caused which arises out of, or in
connection with, the Contract.
Liability for any latent defects or latent diseases is specifically excluded.
