Study Habits and Time Management

Chapter 4
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

After the researchers gathered data with the help of the respondents, the results of the
survey were presented in this chapter. It is shown here the opinion and insights of the
respondents in relation to their study habits and time management. The researchers were also
able to know the advantages and disadvantages of the said learning strategies as well as its
effects. The gathered information will help this study become credible and more meaningful for
the readers. The researchers computed for the weighted mean of each question by means of a
formula stated in chapter three. By using a scale, the researchers will be able to determine
whether the respondents agree or disagree to each situation. With the use of a table, the questions
are presented properly with the number of responses, the number of respondents, weighted mean
and the description whether the respondents strongly agreed, agreed, disagreed or strongly
disagreed.

There are actually a lot of study habits and ways that the students can use to become
better students and effective learners. The researchers want to know the study habits that the 2nd
year BSA students use in order to have a good performance in school. As shown is Table 1, the
researchers mentioned some of the study habits that students usually use and the respondents
were asked to rate each question if they strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree.
Based from the results, the situation I usually seek a quiet place to study got the highest
weighted mean which is 3.66 that falls in the range of strongly agree in which 55 respondents
strongly agreed, 16 of them agreed and five disagreed. The respondents prefer studying in a quiet
and peaceful place. The rest of the situations falls under the range of agree. The second is the
situation, in memorizing, I try to use acronyms, symbols, etc. which has 3.38 as its mean, were
strongly agreed upon by 37 respondents, agreed by 32 of them, six disagreed and one strongly
disagreed. I know what time of the day I do my best studying got a mean of 3.32 in which 336
respondents strongly agreed, 28 respondents agreed and 12 disagreed. Part of the study habits of
the respondents is to know the time that they can review and concentrate the best. Next is the
situation in which 23 strongly agreed, 48 agreed, four disagreed and only one strongly disagreed
with the weighted mean of 3.22, I set aside a regular time for studying every day. Following in
the results in which 27 respondents strongly agreed, 37 respondents agreed and 12 of them
disagreed is the respondents want eating while studying. The situation I always have something
to eat when I study got a mean of 3.20. The situation which got a weighted mean of 3.17 is I

Study Habits and Time Management

focus entirely on my work when I study in which 21 strongly agreed, 47 agreed and eight
respondents disagreed. Next is I mark what I do not understand and seek alternatives that has a
mean of 3.14 in which 16 respondents strongly agreed, 55 agreed and five disagreed. 31
respondents strongly agreed, 26 of the agreed, 16 disagreed and three strongly disagreed that
they easily get disturbed by televisions, computers and other distractions in studying. A weighted
mean of 3.12 was computed in the situation, I am easily distracted by computers, television and
etc. Next to that is the situation, I vary my study activities to include not just reading, but also
group discussions and hands-on work having a weighted mean of 3.08 where in 16 strongly
agreed, 50 agreed and only ten disagreed. A situation with the mean of 3.00 which is exact to the
point value of agree and 19 strongly agreed, 42 agreed, 11 disagreed and four strongly disagreed
is, I study the difficult subjects first before the easier ones. Based from the results, the
respondents also know how to estimate their time on how long they are going to take doing their
assignments or other tasks. The situation, before I begin an assignment, I estimate how long it
will take me doing it got a weighted mean of 2.97 where in 18 respondents strongly agreed, 39
agreed, 18 disagreed and only one strongly disagreed. It is followed by three situations which are
I organize and centralize notes and assignments, both in a notebook and on my computer, I
prefer sitting on a couch when studying, and each week, I dedicate short time to review my
notes and assignments all with a mean of 2.91.18 respondents strongly agreed, 34 agreed, 23
disagreed and one strongly disagreed that they organize their notes and assignments. A habit of
sitting in the couch while studying is strongly agreed by 19 respondents, agreed by 33 of them,
disagreed by 22 respondents and two strongly disagreed. Meanwhile, 17 respondents strongly
agreed, 37 agreed, 20 disagreed and two strongly disagreed that they dedicate time in reviewing
notes. A mean of 2.84 was computed for before each class, I review the assignment and my

Study Habits and Time Management

notes in which 11 strongly agreed, 44 agreed, 19 disagreed and two strongly disagreed. The
respondents also have the study habit which they tend to focus on one subject and not to other
subjects. In relation to this, the situation I spend too much time on some subjects and not
enough on others has a weighted mean of 2.80 where in 16 respondents strongly agreed, 32
agreed, 25 disagreed and three of them strongly disagreed. A bad habit was strongly agreed upon
by 16 respondents, agreed by 31 of them, disagreed by 23 respondents and six strongly disagreed
which is I study only when I feel like it that has a mean of 2.75. The researchers got a mean of
2.74 to the situation, after each class lecture, I review and organize my notes in which 11
strongly agreed, 36 agreed, 27 disagreed and two strongly disagreed. Another habit of the
respondents is to wait until night before reviewing for the next days class. A weighted mean of
2.58 came up for the situation, I wait until the night before a test to review my lecture notes
where in 13 strongly agreed, 25 agreed, 31 disagreed and seven strongly disagreed. The last
situation which is I skip over charts, graphs, and tables when I read a chapter got the weighted
mean of 2.54 which is the lowest but still included in the range of the response agree. 13
respondents strongly agreed, 24 agreed, 30 disagreed and nine strongly disagreed on that
situation. This only means that the most used study habit of the 2nd year BSA students is seeking
for a quiet place to study. They prefer studying in a quiet place rather than a noisy place where
they cant concentrate well.

Time management is needed in order to assign specific time slots to activities as per their
performance. It is making the best use of time since time is always limited. The researchers want
to know how the BSA students manage their time since their course requires them to do a lot of
things. Presented above is the Table 2 to show the responses and the results of the second
problem. Just like in the study habits, the researchers mentioned some ways of managing time
properly for the respondents to be able agree or disagree in each situation. The respondents
agreed on the most of the situations mentioned concerning about their time management. The
situation with a result of 3.28 as the mean in which 38 respondents strongly agreed, 25 agreed,
nine disagreed and four strongly disagreed is lack of concentration is one of my timewasters

Study Habits and Time Management

and is the highest among others. Second in line is I am usually stressed with deadlines and
commitments with 3.24 as the weighted mean in which 27 respondents answered strongly
agree, 41 of them agreed, seven disagreed and only one strongly disagreed. When asked at
which time they prefer to answer, 33 respondents strongly agreed, 30 of them agreed, nine
disagreed and four strongly disagreed in the evening which is 6:00 pm to 11:59 pm. The said
response got a weighted mean of 3.21. It is followed by the situation, I set aside time for
planning and scheduling my tasks that must be accomplished with 3.00 as its mean in which 19
respondents strongly agreed, 42 of them agreed, 11 disagreed and four strongly disagreed. 20
respondents strongly agreed, 36 of them agreed, 15 disagreed and five strongly disagreed in the
answer 3-4 hours in their allocation of time in studying. The response had a mean of 2.93 which
means that most of the respondents spend 3-4 hours mainly on studying. Another way of the
respondents to manage their time is to have a list of the things that is needed to be accomplished.
The situation, I have a list of all the smaller tasks, jobs, and assignments that need to be handled
over the next few weeks got a weighted mean of 2.86 in which 15 respondents strongly agreed,
38 respondents agreed, 20 of them disagreed and three strongly disagreed. Next to it were three
situations which got 2.78 as its means. First situation is the I prepare a daily list of things to do
in which 17 respondents strongly agreed, 30 of them agreed, 24 disagreed and five strongly
disagreed. 14 respondents strongly agreed, 37 respondents agreed, 19 disagreed and six strongly
disagreed in the answer 3-4 hours in response to At home, I allocate leisure hours for: Lastly,
11 respondents strongly agreed, 42 agreed, 188 disagreed and five strongly disagreed in the
situation I often find myself dealing with distractions. These situations were followed by I
tend to do the quick, easy, enjoyable things first which got 2.76 and in which 12 strongly
agreed, 39 respondents agreed, 20 disagreed and five strongly disagreed. 24 respondents strongly

Study Habits and Time Management

agreed, 19 agreed, 22 disagreed and 11 strongly disagreed in the answer more than 5 hours in
relation to how long they study at home and had a mean of 2.74. On the other hand, a mean of
2.66 was computed in the situation, I usually deal with the same material several times even if it
can be dealt with in just one sitting in which seven strongly agreed, 40 agreed, 25 disagreed and
four strongly disagreed. Next to it is the situation I undertake work as it appears rather than in
order of priority which has a weighted mean of 2.63and seven strongly agreed, 40 agreed, 25
disagreed and four strongly disagreed. Another way of the respondents is to postpone things that
are not very urgent. With that, the situation I postpone things which aren't very urgent, even
though they may be important had a computed weighted mean is 2.59 in which eight strongly
agreed, 34 agreed, 29 disagreed and five strongly disagreed. A mean of 2.58 was computed for
the response of 1-2 hours in their allocated time for leisure and 11 respondents strongly agreed,
33 agreed, 21 disagreed and 11 strongly disagreed on it. While in hours allocated for studying,
nine respondents strongly agreed, 31 agreed, 28 disagreed and eight strongly disagreed in the
answer 1-2 hours and got a mean of 2.54. For the situation of what time the respondents want to
study, the response afternoon which is 12:00 pm to 5:59 pm was strongly agreed upon by 12
respondents, 26 agreed, 26 also disagreed and 12 strongly disagreed and has a weighted mean of
2.50. Meanwhile, 21 respondents strongly agreed, 17 agreed, 16 disagreed and 22 strongly
disagreed in the response of dawn which is 3:00 am to 5:59 am and has a mean of 2.49. The
response midnight that is 12:00 am to 2:59 am was strongly agreed by 18 respondents, agreed by
11 respondents, disagreed by 22 of them and strongly disagreed by 25 of them and had a mean of
2.29. Additionally, the respondents disagreed on the rest of the responses. The response with a
mean of 2.28 in which nine strongly agreed, 17 agreed, 34 disagreed and 16 strongly disagreed is
the response less than an hour of doing leisure. Next is the time of studying in the morning which

Study Habits and Time Management

is from 6:00 am to 11:59 am with a mean of 2.25 in which nine strongly agreed, 17 respondents
agreed, 34 disagreed and 16 of them strongly disagreed. Followed by it is the response of
spending more than 5 hours in leisure with a mean of 2.16 which was strongly agreed by 12
respondents, 13 agreed, 26 of them disagreed and 25 of them strongly disagreed. A mean of 1.86
was computed for the situation I do not take breaks when studying in which only one strongly
agreed, 11 agreed, 40 disagreed and 24 strongly disagreed. For the hours of studying two
respondents strongly agreed, nine agreed, 39 disagreed and 26 strongly disagreed on the response
of less than one hour and got a mean of 1.83. Lastly, two respondents strongly agreed, seven
agreed, 35 disagreed and 32 strongly disagreed in the situation I never experienced cramming
and the weighted mean is 1.72.
In this table, the respondents found out that the respondents have different ways of
managing their time. The situation with the most number of responses is the Lack of
concentration is one of my timewasters. It is proven by the respondents that whenever they tend
to be distracted and lack concentration, their time is wasted even if it is only for minutes. On the
other hand, most respondents disagreed on the situation I never experienced cramming. It
means that most of the time, the respondents are lacking time for activities to be done which
results to cramming.

Study habits are really of great help to people most especially to students. Included in this
research are the advantages of study habits. Students may have their own different study habits
but this all those has one objective. That is to help students easily learn and accomplish things to
have a good academic performance in school as well as to become better persons. The results in
the conducted survey are shown above in Table 3. The first advantage which is It helps me
become more responsible was strongly agreed upon by the 41 respondents, agreed by 32 of
them but three disagreed with 3.50 as its weighted mean. The second advantage is study habits
make learning of the students easier got a 3.34 mean which falls under the range of agree same
as the next situations. 31 respondents strongly agreed, 40 agreed and 5 disagreed. Third
advantage has a weighted mean of 3.29 which states that the respondents knew how to set

priorities. 23 respondents strongly agreed on that, 52 of them agreed and only one disagreed.
Fourth is the study habits create more efficient environment having a mean of 3.22 in which 23
respondents strongly agreed, 47 agreed and 6 disagreed. The fifth advantage has a weighted
mean of 3.18 which is I consider studying a part of my chores because of study habits. The
respondents who respond strongly agree were 25, 43 agreed, five disagreed and three strongly
disagreed. The sixth is I tend to be less stressed and has a weighted mean of 3.08 in which 20
respondents strongly agreed, 42 agreed and 14 strongly disagreed. Lastly, the advantage I
always get good grades got a mean of 2.97 in which 17 respondents strongly agreed, 45 of them
agreed, 9 disagreed and 5 strongly disagreed. Truly, study habits have a lot of advantages. But
most students believed that because of study habits, they become more responsible and of course
effective learners.

Time management is as important as study habits. Managing your time will allow you to
finish tasks early and be able to spend time wisely. And so, the researchers also want to find out
the advantages of time management. Shown above are the different advantages of time
management. With it are the responses of the respondents to each question with the computed
weighted mean. The respondents all agreed on the mentioned advantages. The first is the Im
becoming more productive with a weighted mean of 3.18 in which 19 respondents strongly
agreed, 52 agreed and 5 disagreed. It was followed by the situation, I know how to spend on the
right time the right activity which has a mean of 3.13. 17 respondents strongly agreed on it, 52
respondents agreed and 7 disagreed. The respondents learn how to use time properly because of
time management. Next is a weighted mean of 3.11 in which 21 respondents strongly agreed, 42
of them agreed and 13 disagreed for the situation I know how to manage my time well. Two

Study Habits and Time Management

situations were found out to have a weighted mean of 2.97. Those are I always meet deadlines
in which 15 respondents strongly agreed, 45 agreed, 15 disagreed and only one disagreed and I
always finish my tasks in which 14 respondents strongly agreed, 46 of them agreed and 16
disagreed. A situation that states students become organized because of time management with a
mean of 2.89 in which 12 respondents strongly agreed, 44 of them agreed and 20 disagreed.
Lastly, the situation I always feel focused has a mean of 2.84. 11 respondents strongly agreed,
43 agreed on the situation, 21 disagreed and only one strongly disagreed. Although the
respondents all agreed on the responses, the most agreed advantage of time management is that
students are being more productive and effective in many ways.

In relation to the study, the researchers also want to find out the disadvantage of not
having study habits. They want to know the effects to the students as a person and to their
performance in school. As presented in Table 5, the respondents strongly agreed on most of the
situations. The situation that got the highest weighted mean which is 3.58 is I dont feel
prepared in class discussions in which 44 respondents strongly agreed, 32 of them agreed and
no one disagreed. Without following study habits, the respondents tend to be not prepared in
class discussions. Next to it is the situation I get low grades which has 3.57 mean. 44
respondents strongly agreed, 31 agreed and only one disagreed. Also, a weighted mean of 3.57 is
computed in I become pessimistic in which 43 respondents strongly agreed and 33 agreed.
Following is the situation I dont accomplish tasks easily which has 3.55 as its mean. 42
respondents strongly agreed, 32 of them agreed and one respondent disagreed on this situation.

Study Habits and Time Management

The last situation that is under the range of strongly agreed is I am not motivated that has a
weighted mean of 3.51. 41 respondents strongly agreed, 33 agreed and 2 of them disagreed.
Without study habits, the respondents agreed that studying for them is boring. A weighted mean
of 3.45 is computed for this situation and is under the range of agree. The respondents who
strongly agreed were 35, 40 agreed and one disagreed. Lastly, 37 respondents strongly agreed
that they tend to be more stressed without study habits, 34 agreed and only 5 disagreed on the
situation which gives a mean of 3.42. The researchers found out that the disadvantage that the
respondents agree upon is they dont feel prepared in class discussions because of not having
study habits.

Time management is very important to students since they need to be conscious of time
to accomplish everything that is asked to do. The researchers also want to know the
disadvantages of not having time management. Disadvantages were also mentioned by the
researchers as shown in Table 6. After getting the weighted mean of each questions, the
researchers found out that the respondents agreed on all the disadvantages mentioned. The
situations I dont have plans and I dont finish tasks giving me sleepless nights both got a
weighted mean of 3.59. 46 respondents strongly agreed that they dont have plans, 29 of them
agreed and one disagreed. 45 respondents strongly agreed that they have sleepless nights and 31
of them agreed. Next are the situations I dont meet deadlines and I allot more time in leisure
than in studying which both have a weighted mean of 3.55. 44 respondents strongly agreed that
they dont meet deadlines, 30 respondents agreed and only two disagreed. Meanwhile, 42

Study Habits and Time Management

respondents strongly agreed that they allot more time in leisure and 34 disagreed. Next to it is the
situation I get addicted to procrastination with a weighted mean of 3.51. 39 respondents
strongly agreed and 37 of them agreed. Followed by it is the situation I miss out opportunities
because of being late which has a mean of 3.47. The respondents that strongly agreed were 38,
36 respondents agreed and there were 2 who disagreed. Lastly, the situation My performance in
school is badly affected got a weighted mean of 3.42 since 34 respondents strongly agreed and
42 of them agreed. It is proven that there is a big advantage of not having study habits and the
one that was strongly agreed upon is they tend to not have plans and they have sleepless nights
because of not finishing tasks earlier.

To conclude this study, the researchers want to find out the effects of the mentioned study
habits and time management to the performance of the students. Shown above in Table 7 are the
responses of the respondents on the effects of the said learning strategies. The researchers found
out that the effects that were agreed by most of the respondents are I understand my lessons
well and I know how to set priorities both with a weighted mean of 3.24. 22 respondents
strongly agreed that they understand their lessons well, 51 agreed, 2 of them disagreed and one

Study Habits and Time Management

strongly disagreed. 22 respondents also strongly agreed that they know how to set priorities, 50
agreed and 4 of them disagreed. Next to it is the situation, I am able to allot time for my family
and friends with a weighted mean of 3.21. 24 respondents strongly agreed, 44 agreed and 8 of
them disagreed. Two situations both had weighted mean of 3.12 which are I am more
responsible and my tasks are well organized and I can understand complicated lessons. 22
respondents strongly agreed that they are more responsible, 47 agreed, 2 disagreed and 5 of them
strongly disagreed. 19 respondents answered strongly agreed in the situations the can understand
complicated lessons, 49 agreed, 7 disagreed and only one strongly disagreed. The next three
situations got a weighted mean of 3.12. In both effects, I am able to give time for leisure and
I can easily achieve my goals, 19 respondents answered strongly agree, 48 respondents agreed,
8 disagreed and only one strongly agreed. 19 respondents strongly agreed that they get good
grades in all subjects, 47 of them agreed and 10 disagreed. For the next two situations I can
avoid cramming and I finish my tasks earlier, the researchers computed a weighted mean of
3.08. 19 respondents strongly agreed that they can avoid cramming, 45 of them agreed, 11
disagreed and only one strongly disagreed. The effect I have a prepared schedule for the week
has a weighted mean of 3.05. 16 respondents strongly agreed on the said effect, 48 agreed and 12
disagreed. Lastly, a weighted mean of 2.97 was computed for the effect I get enough time to
sleep. 22 respondents strongly agreed on it, 35 of them agreed, 14 disagreed and 5 strongly
disagreed. All the effects were agreed upon by the respondents which prove that they are
positively affected by study habits and time management.
