StarWarsisanAmericanepicspaceoperafranchisecenteredonafilmseries
createdbyGeorgeLucas.Thefilmseries,consistingoftwotrilogies(andan
upcomingthird),hasspawnedanextensivemediafranchisecalledthe
ExpandedUniverseincludingbooks,televisionseries,computerandvideo
games,andcomicbooks.Thesesupplementstothefranchiseresultedin
significantdevelopmentoftheseries'fictionaluniverse,keepingthefranchise
activeinthe16yearinterimbetweenthetwofilmtrilogies.Thefranchise
depictsagalaxydescribedasfar,farawayinthedistantpast,andit
commonlyportraysJediasarepresentationofgood,inconflictwiththeSith,
theirevilcounterpart.Theirweaponofchoice,thelightsaber,iscommonly
recognizedinpopularculture.Thefranchise'sstorylinescontainmany
themes,withstronginfluencesfromphilosophyandreligion.
ThefirstfilmintheserieswasoriginallyreleasedonMay25,1977,underthe
titleStarWars,by20thCenturyFox,andbecameaworldwidepopculture
phenomenon,followedbytwosequels,releasedatthreeyearintervals.
Sixteenyearsafterthereleaseofthetrilogy'sfinalfilm,thefirstinanew
prequeltrilogyoffilmswasreleased.Thethreeprequelfilmswerealso
releasedatthreeyearintervals,withthefinalfilmofthetrilogyreleasedon
May19,2005.In2012,TheWaltDisneyCompanyacquiredLucasfilmfor
$4.05billionandannouncedthatitwouldproducethreenewfilms,withthe
firstfilm,StarWars:TheForceAwakens,plannedforreleasein2015.[1]20th
CenturyFoxstillretainsthedistributionrightstothefirsttwoStarWars
trilogies,owningpermanentrightsfortheoriginalfilmEpisodeIV:ANew
Hope,whileholdingtherightstoEpisodesIIII,V,andVIuntilMay2020.[2]
Reactionstotheoriginaltrilogywerepositive,withthelastfilmbeing
consideredtheweakest,whiletheprequeltrilogyreceivedamoremixed
reaction,withmostofthepraisebeingforthefinalfilm,accordingtomost
reviewaggregatorwebsites.Allsixofthemainfilmsintheserieswerealso
nominatedfororwonAcademyAwards.Allofthemainfilmshavebeenbox
officesuccesses,withtheoverallboxofficerevenuegeneratedbytheStar
Warsfilms(includingthetheatricalStarWars:TheCloneWars)totalling
$4.38billion,[3]makingitthefifthhighestgrossingfilmseries.[4]Thesuccess
hasalsoledtomultiplerereleasesintheatersfortheseries.
