Executive Summary

TherearemanyvaluablecomponentstotheGoGreenmovementattheUniversityof
SouthFloridaSaintPetersburg.Students,faculty,investorsandprogramsarevitalto
thesuccessofenvironmentalsustainabilityoncampus.TheStudentGreenEnergy
Fund(SGEF),theStudentEnvironmentalAwarenessSociety(SEAS),andthe
GardeningClubarethreemainstudentruninitiativesthathavemadesignificant
changesforstudents,facultyandthecommunity.

Thankstothesethreeresources,itispossibleforstudentstobringtheirinnovative
environmentallyviableplanstolife.Thegreeninitiativehasimprovedcampuslife
immenselybyspreadingawarenessabouttheimportance
ofsolvingenvironmentalproblemsandproviding
possibilitiesforcreatingasustainableecosystemthrough
smallyetsignificantstepsbystudents.

Introduction

TheGreenMovementatUSFSPhasencouragedandcreatedapathtowards
environmentalsustainabilitythatbeganwithorganizationsandprogramssuchasSEAS,
theSGEFandtheGardeningClub.Thankstotheseinitiatives,itispossibleforstudents
andUSFSPaffiliatestomakeapositiveimpactfortheircampus,
communityandtheenvironment.Throughaminimaladditionto
tuitioncostpercredithourandaneasyproposalprocess,the
SGEFhelpsmakestudentsgreendreamscometrue.Theeffects
oftheseorganizationsoncampushavebeenexponentialover
thepastthreeyears,especiallyduetotheheightenedawareness
oftheimportanceofclimatechange.OrganizationslikeSEAS
andtheGardeningclubeducatestudentsandthecommunityon
thistopicwhileSGEFassistswithputtingthechangesinaction.

Successful Projects

CarSharingProgram
InFebruaryof2013,inconjunctionwiththe
CenterforUrbanTransportationResearchand
WeCarbyEnterprise,USFSPintroducedanew
carsharingprogramthatwouldprovidean
affordableandmoreenvironmentallyfriendly
transportationoptionforstudentsandfaculty.Therearetwovehiclesthatareavailable
throughthecarsharingprogram:aFiat500,andaNissanCube.Registeredstudents,
18yearsofageolder,canreserveoneofthetworentalcarsonline,pay$8.50perhour
ofuse,andthenreturnitbacktoitsoriginallocationforthenextstudent.Thehourlyrate
includesfuelandaliabilityprotectionthatisrequiredbythestate.Thistypeofprogram
offersasustainablesolutiontotransportationneedsofstudentsundertherentalcarage
requirement.

SolarDocksandSolstice
AnothersuccessfulprojectwasimplementedinFebruaryof
2013withtheinstallationoftwoSolarDocksandSolstice.
FundedbytheSGEF,theSolarDocksandtheSolsticeprovide
completelyselfsustainingchargingstationswithmultiple
outletsforstudentsonthego.Thestationsaremadewith

completelyrecyclablematerialsandoffershadeonhotdaysforstudentswhilethey
chargeuptheirportabledevices.

TheGreenCardioLoft
Duringthespringof2013,theSGEFsupportedatransformationofthefitnesscenterat
USFSPastudentproposaltoputenergybackinto
theuniversity.InthenewGreenCardioLoft,brand
newWoodwayCurvetreadmills,aswellasGreen
Machinebikesandellipticals,havereplacedtheold
standardworkoutequipmentthatused
unnecessaryenergy.Currentlytheaveragerateofpowergeneratedbythenew
equipmentputsapproximately26kilowattsofenergybackintothebuildingeveryhour.

HybridWaterfrontTruck
AlsointheSpringof2013,anewHybridtruckwaspurchasedusingtheStudentGreen
EnergyFundthathasthepotentialtosavethewaterfrontapproximately$4200peryear
infuelexpensesandrentalvehicleexpenses.Thecosttooperatepriortothepurchase
averagedapproximately$3600peryearinfuelcostsalone.Thetruck,thougha
relativelylargepurchase,willassistwithtransportingequipmentandstudentstovarious
eventsbothoncampusandoff,allwhiledecreasingUSFSPscollectivecarbon
footprint.

WaterBottleFillingStations
Duringthefallsemesterof2013,theSGEFsuccessfullyfundedaprojectfornewwater
bottlefillingstationstoreducewaterbottlewasteoncampus.Theprojectbeganduring
thefallsemesterandcompletedduringthespringsemesterof2014,implementinga
newpracticeforfillingwaterbottlesonthegoacrossnineseparatebuildingson
campus.Additionally,eachstationhasadigitaldisplaythatprovidesanuptodate
realtimenumberofbottlessavedbythatstation,sothatstudentscanseetheimpact
theyaremakinginreducingwaterbottlewasteoncampus.

ParkingGarageLightingRevamp
Additionally,duringthissametimethatthenewwaterbottlefillingstationswereinfull
swing,anewprojectforretrofittingtheparkinggaragelightingwithnewLEDlightswas
initiated.Therevampoftheparkinggaragelightingwillbecompletedinthreephases
beginningonthegroundfloor.Withthefirstphasealreadycompleted,theadditional
phasesareonanongoingprojectalsofundedbytheSGEFtoprovideamore
sustainablesolutiontoourstudentneeds.

Tips for Going Green and Making Savings

Whenpeoplethinkaboutgoinggreenthereisa
notionthatittakessomespendingmoneyto
achievethosegoals.TheCollegeofBusinessat
USFhasofferedthefollowingsimpleideasthat

helpbusinessestogogreenandhelpreducecost.Theseideasarethingsthatnotonly
businessescandobutalsosomethingweallcandoaswell.Ideasforgoinggreenand
savingmoneyoncopyingandprintinginclude:reusepaper,print/copybacktofront
ratherthanusingmultiplepages,notprintingemailsunlessabsolutelynecessaryand
dontusecolorinkunlessabsolutelynecessary.TheCollegeofBusinessofferedtips
forcurbingelectricalusesuchasturningofflightswhennotinuse,turningoffcomputer
monitorsandprintersandunpluggingappliancesthatarenotbeingused.Lastlythere
weresomefinaltipstheUSFCollegeofBusinessofferedagaintosavemoneyandhelp
togogreen:Useamugorglassinsteadofdisposableones,workhardtorecycleas
muchaspossibleandusescrappaperasnotepads.

USFSPPartnerswithPSTA
IneffortstogogreenandkeepthatsustainabilityupUSFSPpartneredupwith
thePinellasSuncoastTransitAuthoritytoallowbothstudentsandteacherstoreceive
freerideswhentravelingonPSTAs
busesandtrolleys.Thisinitiativeis
hopingtohelpreduceemissionsinto
theenvironmentwhichthe
encouragementofhavingmore
studentsandteachersusingthebus
systemratherthantakingtheircarsto
schoolorworkandotherplacesaroundthecommunity.Inadditiontothattheprogram

isalsoexpectedtoaddmoneybackintothestudentsandteacherspocketswiththe
amountofgassavingstheywouldincurbyusingPSTAsbusesandtrolleys.

LEED Certification

InJanuaryof2010,USFSPsScienceand
TechnologybuildingearnedaGoldlevelLEED
CertificationfromtheUSGreenBuildingCouncil.
LEEDstandsforLeadershipinEnvironmentaland
EnergyDesign,andtheprogramisdesignedto
provideanationalratingsystemthatratesthe
design,construction,andoperationofnewly
constructedorrenovatedbuildingsthatenhance
environmentalandhumanhealthcontinuity
overall.Ultimately,theratingsystemis
usedtomeasurehowsustainablea
buildingis.

Thescorecardfortheratingsystem
measuresquiteafewdifferentvariables,
includingsustainablesites,waterefficiency,
energyandatmosphere,materialand

resources,indoorenvironmentalquality,andoverallbuildinginnovation.Ultimately,this
organizationseekstomotivatecollegeslikeUSFSPtomakeintentionaldecisionsto
buildinamoresustainablemanner,useresourcesmoreefficiently,andraise
awarenessabouttheenvironmentandtheimpactonnotonlythestudents,butonthe
communityaswell.Achievingcertificationisthemostnotablewaythatacollegeor
universitycandemonstratehowgreentheirbuildingis,aswellasdemonstratean
environmentconsciousplanforfuturegrowth.
Sinceitsinitialrecognitionin2010,USFSPhasmaintainedtheGoldstandardfor
LEEDCertificationfortheScienceandTechnologybuildingthroughSeptemberof2014.
Boasting35,000squarefeet,thistwostorybuildingishometo8classrooms,8
instructionallabs,and5marinesciencelabs.Costingatotalof$12milliondollars,the
buildingwasfundedbyPECO,aprogramofthestateofFloridathatregularlyfunds
renovationsornewconstructionforeducationalinstitutionsthroughutilitytaxes.
HavingbeenrecognizedforaGoldlevelLEEDCertifiedbuilding,itisclearthat
USFSPhasastrongvisiontomaintainitssustainabilitygoals.Continuingtofocuson
LEEDCertificationforfuturenewconstructionandrenovationwillseparateUSFSPfrom
otheruniversitiesintermsofenvironmentalawareness.

How the SGEF Works

TheStudentGreenEnergyFeeisusedtoestablishorimprovetheuseof
renewableenergytechnologiesorenergyefficienciesthatdirectlylowergreenhouse

gasemissions,waste,orenergycosts.Thefee
allowstheUSFSystemtoreinforceitsvalueof
social,economicandenvironmentalsustainability.
Thisfeeiswasvotedandapprovedontobe
addedtothestudentstuition.Thenominalfeeis
$1.00foreverycredithour.Projectsthatare
broughtuponaretobediscussedduringmeetings
anddecidewhetherornotitsanideathatthey
wanttofund.Itsthenvotedonanduponapprovalitwillbeimplemented.TheSGEF
consistsof4students,4universityfaculty/staffmembers,and1studentchairandthese
arethepeoplewhoaretheembodimentwhovotesontheprojects.SGEFalways
welcomeshelpwhenevertheycangetitandthesehelpcomesfromstudentson
campus.Thesestudentsarenonvotingmembersthatwantstobeinvolvedin
continuingtheSGEFandlookformorehelpfulwaysinthefuture.

WheretheFundsComeFromandWhereTheyGo

Asstated,theSGEFfundscomefromthestudentsthatattendsUSFSP.This
fundhasalreadyaccruedloadsoffundstohelpinitsimplementationofnewprojects
andinnovation.Withthe$1.00foreverycredithour,SGEFhasalreadyapprovedandis
fundingcurrentprojects.Withthat$1.00foreveryyearthatwillaccumulateupto

about$140,000ayear.Withadditionto$160,000thathasbeenawardedto5SGEF
projectsproposedin2012.
Thesecurrentprojectsincludessolarpoweredchargingstationsintheformof
picnictablesbythewaternearCoquinaHallandthelibrary,andabenchoutsideofthe
ScienceandTechnologybuildingtheseareconvenientforplugginginelectronics
suchascellphonesandlaptopswhilepeopleenjoytheoutdoors.

AnewhybridtruckforWaterfrontprogramsandthistrucktransportspeopleand
equipmentforkayakadventures,canoetripsandsailingregattas.
About200brightgreen,25ouncealuminumwaterbottleswasdistributedto
studentstopromotenewwaterbottlefillingstationsaroundcampus.Thestations,
providingfilteredwater,willhighlightadigitaldisplaywithanuptotheminutecountof

howmanyplasticbottleshavebeeneliminatedbytheprogram.TheseBottlingRefill
Stationsatcampusvisiblymeasurethenumberofplasticbottlessavedthey
estimatethatthedisposalofabout1500plasticbottleswillbemitigatedannually
throughthisproject.
Thefundwillalsogotowardstheparkinggaragelightingwithenergyefficient
LEDlightingwhichwillreduceenergycostsforthebuildingbyupto70%andreduce
emissionsupto48MTCO2(roughlyequaltothetotalemissionsof6singlefamily
homesinayear).Alsoinaddition,onemoreWoodwaytreadmillatthecampusgymthat
ispoweredcompletelyoffthegrid.

How SEAS Makes a Difference

InadditiontotheStudentGreenEnergyFundcomeswithanotherinitiativeand
thatistheSEASwhichstandsforStudentEnvironmentalAwarenessSociety.SEASis
anorganizationthatpromotes
awarenessonenvironmental
issuesandprovidesactivitiesfor
studentstogetinvolvedinwith
regardstotheenvironment,
bothoncampusandinthelocal

community.WhileSEASisastudentorganization,SGEFisafundthatsupports
campusgreenenergyprojectsbothfinanciallyandlogistically.Studentscansubmit
proposalsforprojectstheybelievewillhelptheenvironmentandsustainabilityon
campus.IfSGEFapprovestheproposalitwillthenhelpfundtheproject(s).The
purposeoftheSEASwasthatitsawthattrashwasaconstantprobleminBayboro
Harbor.Thesetrashconsistedofvariousthingssuchasbottles,bags,Styrofoam,
cigarettes,andotherrandomobjects.Duetothelocationallofthetrashcomingoutof
thecityissentthroughapipelineanddirectedtoourharbor,ultimatelyleadingtothe
bay.Theirgoalwastounitestudentsforthecauseofcleaningupthetrashwhichour
communitythrowsaway.Evensometimeswhenyoureouttherelookingintotheharbor
youseetrashfloatingfromplacestoplaces.SEAShelpedcleanedthatupbystudent
volunteeringtohelpsetupawatergoatandcleaningbypickinguptrasharoundthe
harbor.Thewatergoathashelpedtremendouslyduetoitshelpfulnessintrappingthe
trashthatcomesoutof
thepipeline.

Conclusion
TheoverallimpactofGoingGreenatUSFSPhasaffectedthestudents,facultyand
communityinnumerousways.Bettereducatingstudentsonthevalueofsustainingthe
environmentisanimportantaspectoftheGreenInitiativeandthisqualityofthemovement
hasencouragedmanyinnovativeideasandprojectsthathavebeenproposed,acceptedand
fundedbytheSGEF.Afewofthe
significantandsuccessfulprojects
includeyetarenotlimitedtowater
bottlefillingstations,ahybridtruck
forthewaterfront,andrecycling
binsthatdividelandfillfrom
aluminumorplasticsspread
throughoutcampus.Duetoa
minimaladditiontostudenttuition
coststheSGEFobtainsfundsto
ensurethesevisionsaremade
possible.Supplementarytothe
SGEF,theSEASorganizationpromotestherecognitionandunderstandingofenvironmental
issues,theimportanceofspendingtimeoutdoorsandmakingchangesthatleadtoagreener
campus,communityandworld.Thefinalimpactfulinstitutionofgreeninitiativesisthe
GardeningClubwhichmanagestheBayboroGarden,educatesmembersontheimportance
ofknowingwhatyouareeatingaswellaswhereitcomesfromandempowersstudentsor
USFSPaffiliatestoplant,nurtureandharvesttheirownfoods.Together,theseresourceslead
