Where
we’ve been.
Despite a difficult economy, Winston-Salem Business
Inc. experienced steady activity throughout 2009.
WSBI assisted the location or expansion of three
manufacturing projects. The following pages are
a summary of those projects and more detailed
information about marketing initiatives in 2009.

Bekaert Textiles

Jobs: 12

Location: Union Cross Business Park

Belgium-based Bekaert Textiles expanded its operations at


Union Cross Business Park to include a new manufacturing
process. The company installed a new state-of-the-art machine
to accommodate the new product line. Winston-Salem was
chosen over the company’s plant in Mexico for the expansion.

TurboCare

Jobs: 145
Investment: $45 million
Location: TurboCare facility in Rural Hall, NC

TurboCare, a division of Siemens Energy, expanded its


Rural Hall operation to include a new manufacturing line for
refurbishing of turbine engine blades for the power generation
industry. The project was made successful with a One North
Carolina grant from the state, and a matching grant from
Forsyth County, Duke Energy and other private partners.

Waste Energy, LLC

Jobs: 15
Investment: $2 million
Location: 5,000-square-foot production facility
at Union Cross Business Park

Waste Energy, LLC is a subsidiary of Spartanburg, S.C.-based


TMD Technologies. The company purchased three acres of land
at Union Cross Business Park to build and operate the first
ethanol production plant of its kind in the United States. The
company uses waste from bottling companies and converts
the raw material into ethanol.

About us.
In 1987, Winston-Salem Business Inc. (WSBI) was founded with a mission to
recruit new businesses to Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. With a profes-
sional staff of three, WSBI focuses on marketing to and recruiting new compa-
nies to the community, creating jobs and expanding the area tax base.

Since its inception in 1987, WSBI has assisted in the location of 126 companies
into Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. These companies have created more
than 12,400 new jobs and expanded the area tax base by over $979 million.

Winston-Salem Business Inc. is the only local economic development agency


that exclusively focuses its marketing and public relations efforts on external
companies. These programs promote Winston-Salem and Forsyth County as an
exceptional business location.
