We see our role as stress reduction! This is why our yearby-year guide recommends that you engage with us in
your freshman year. By starting early, you may slowly and
gradually take advantage of all the programming available, adding interesting internship experiences, attending
useful programs, and making valuable networking connections. Building toward a career decision is much less
stressful than trying to do it all in one year, one semester,
or one week.

The collection of sample rsums and cover letters presented here were all written by recent Yale College graduates with whom we have worked. These are NOT templates to be slavishly copied, but are intended to prompt
you to consider how you would like your final materials to
look, and how you might want to promote your candidacy
in a letter.
We conclude with a strategy for approaching interviews.
This deliberately avoids providing typical questions, focusing instead upon broad categories of questions, since
for any one category there can be millions of possible permutations. However, we are sure that the categories- developed with help from both industry and academics- are
robust, and will repay your attention.

Career Services

Undergraduate Career Services (UCS), located at 55


Whitney Avenue, offers programs that help students of
Yale College further their career goals. Our role at UCS
is to help students learn about themselves, to help them
explore the world around them and learn about their career options, and to help them make informed decisions
about their futures in order to realize their goals. We do
this through individual and group meetings, through the
provision of research materials, and through the coordination of programs that can put students in direct contact
with professionals and organizations in a wide variety of
fields of interest. All students are invited to visit UCS to
learn about our programs and resources.

Counseling Hours

Professional staff members and peer counselors are


available each weekday to answer students quick questions on a first-come, first-served, walk-in basis. No
appointment is needed for these 15-minute sessions.
Check www.yale.edu/career for the schedule of these
Open Hours. In addition, students can schedule an
individual counseling appointment for more in-depth
career related discussions. To schedule an appointment,
call 432-0800.

UCS maintains a website with a wealth of career information in addition to internship and job postings.
Students can explore this site (www.yale.edu/career)
on their own, and career counselors may also suggest
specific resources during appointments. Check the site
often for information on upcoming career-related programs and events.

Email Distribution Lists

Students can receive emails from UCS relevant to their


interests via several email lists that target specific areas
of interest. The distribution lists are: Arts & Communications; Business; Education; Government; Health Professions; International Opportunities; Internships; Law;
LGBTQ; On-Campus Interview Program; Science/Engineering; and Social Services & Advocacy. To sign up,

Meetings, Workshops,
and Career Panels

UCS offers workshops, information meetings, and career


panels on a variety of topics throughout the year. Topics have
included Interview Skills, Summer Options, International Internships, and Consulting Demystified. The Employer in Residence program brings employers to campus to
review rsums, conduct mock interviews, or speak on topics
relevant to their industries. In addition, alumni (or other distinguished individuals) often come to campus to participate
in career panels. Examples of such panelists include teachers, women in finance, journalists, arts administrators, and
health-care practitioners, among others.

Internship Resources

Whether a student plans to explore a career or wishes to


obtain greater knowledge about a chosen field, an internship can offer valuable experience. Through internships,
you have the opportunity to learn more about yourself and
to apply your college education in a temporary work setting.
UCS maintains an online database of approximately 10,000
internships available, both internationally and in the US, to
students interested in a wide variety of fields. The resource library and UCS website both house directories of internships
and internship evaluations by students, indexed by field of
interest.

On-Campus Interview
Program

The On-Campus Interview Program provides a unique


opportunity for undergraduate students to meet, and
interview with representatives from many organizations. This is an excellent way to begin planning for
life after Yale as a sophomore, junior, or senior and to
take the first step on the path to a successful career. The
organizations that come to interview on-campus offer
employment opportunities in fields such as finance,
consulting, advertising, nonprofit, government, education, political action, and research. On-campus interviews take place during both the fall and spring semesters.

Career Fairs

UCS hosts a variety of career fairs throughout the year.


Fairs include: Private Sector (Corporate), Nonprofit,
Health Professions, Law School/Public Policy, International Opportunities, and Federal Government. Several
fairs are collaborative events, such as the spring nonprofit fairs in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Another collaborative effort is MetroLink NYC and DC.
The NYC event focuses on careers in communications,
media, advertising, and publishing, while the DC event
focuses on government, law, think tanks, policy, and
social-service/advocacy.

UCS their first year for guidance on specific courses required for admission to the various health-related professional school programs. Beginning in November of

Students interested in attending law school should

most enjoy and desire in the working world.

Realizing Goals

After identifying your career interests, preparing to find

and pursuing them. In the career field(s) that you have
identified, seek and create lists of organizations/companies that hire people with your skills and goals. Again,

One of the many ways to discern what you enjoy doing

Developing
Your Rsum

Your professional rsum should be more than a list of the


jobs and activities you have done. Regardless of the headings you use (Experience or other), you should provide
relevant and thorough (yet concise) explanations of what
you did in each setting. These definitions should always
start with strong verbs, and you should avoid repeating
those verbs. We have provided a list of action verbs to assist you. In addition, a thesaurus always comes in handy! In
each bullet point, focus on what you do (or did), not what
the organization does.
As you define your experiences, consider how a particular
skill would be transferable to another setting; dont dismiss
an experience as necessarily irrelevant. If you worked in a
clothing store, defining your experience as Ran cash register would not be an obvious usable or desirable skill outside

Cover Letters

Within your cover letter, you should also convey your


interest in the industry, the organization itself, and/or
the position you are seeking. To do this, you will need
to personalize your letter for each opportunity or organization. The closing of your letter should focus on the
next steps, such as requesting an interview.
The content of an informational interview request is
similar to that of a standard cover letter. Focus on why
you are interested in speaking with that person, share
information about your career interests and goals, and
discuss steps for follow-up.
A poorly written cover letter speaks volumes. Plan to
have your cover letter reviewed at least once before you
send it out. This can be done at UCS during open hours,
or if you need additional assistance in developing your
cover letter, you may choose to schedule an appointment with a career counselor.

Cover letters can serve many purposes. The most obvious use is as a cover for your rsum when applying
for an internship or job. As discussed in the Getting
Started section, a cover letter can also be used to inquire into the possibility of creating or identifying an
unadvertised opportunity, for both jobs and internships, and to request an informational interview.

Review the following examples to assist you in developing your own cover letters. There are examples of cover
letters used to apply for internships, create internships,
apply for jobs, inquire about job opportunities and ask
for informational interviews.

Your cover letter provides the opportunity to highlight


the skills and experiences that you want a potential employer to notice, and to connect a set of experiences and
skills to a position that may not be directly related to
what is on your rsum. It also enables the reader to
gain a sense of your writing style and ability to focus.
Begin the letter by clearly stating who you are and
why you are writing. If you are applying to a specific
position, state the position title and indicate how you
learned about the opportunity. For an inquiry letter,
state the type of opportunity you are interested in.
The body of the letter should highlight what you have to
offer personal attributes and the skills gained through
internships and jobs, through coursework, and through

the eighteenth century. Because the Old South Meeting House played such a pivotal role in the events leading up to
the American Revolution as well as in the cultural history of colonial Boston, the museum and its collections are of
particular interest to me. I visited the museum last summer and especially enjoyed its use of multi-media to engage
visitors and make historic artifacts and events accessible in a modern and familiar context. I would especially enjoy

Through my various editorial positions at the Yale Herald I have learned how to thrive under pressure, meet
deadlines, communicate with coworkers and business affiliates, function as part of a cohesive team, and conduct

proficiency in word-processing, internet research, page design, and layout make me particularly well suited to
work in the publishing industry.
My leadership experience as a newspaper editor was augmented this past summer by a month-long backpacking
course with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). The curriculum focused on instruction in
wilderness leadership skills, and for the duration of the month I worked closely with the other students on my
trip to accomplish tasks such as planning routes and navigating through off-trail wilderness. Toward the end of
the course I was chosen as one of two student leaders of a three-day-long, off-trail traverse in the Olympic
Mountains, independent of our two instructors. In the mountains I cooperated with others out of inclination,
necessity, and shared purpose. The experience imparted to me invaluable skills both in the task of leading and in
the necessary compromise that is essential to working on a team.
I am excited about becoming part of the process by which rough drafts travel to bookstore shelves and finally
into my own hands. I am confident in my ability to contribute to Random House, and I have enclosed my

I am applying for the position of Program Assistant. I graduated from Yale University in May 2004
with a B.A. in Art History. At Yale I was fortunate to have worked at the Yale Art Gallery, where I
was able to interact with children and adults from New Haven in an art and educational setting.
As a facilitator for the Yale University-sponsored program Artful Tales, I developed three-hour
workshops for groups of children (ages 5 to 8). Based around a theme, each session included a story,
brief tours/discussions in the gallery, and the completion of creative hands-on craft projects. After
working mainly with middle- to upper-class suburban children with extensive exposure to the arts, I
realized that the lack of arts education in New Haven Public Schools was tremendous. Working with
another peer, we cofounded a program entitled Adventures in Art, the goal of which is to bring art to
children who have had little chance to develop their creativity. Adventures in Art allows Yale
students to create a three-week block of sessions (for children ages 7 to 12) that culminates in a field
trip to the Yale Art Gallery. Each one-hour lesson consists of a presentation/discussion of a specific
theme and an art activity. I would be happy to provide a copy of a sample lesson plan.
As a cofounder of Adventures in Art, I was responsible for meeting with school officials to organize
program times, discuss the curriculum, and arrange the field trips to the Yale Art Gallery. I also
worked with an artist-in-residence to create and execute the original art activities we used during the
sessions. Other responsibilities included gathering student volunteers and teaching class sessions.
Having volunteered as a teacher's assistant in an elementary school in Spain, I am also comfortable
interacting with children in a classroom setting and am fluent in Spanish (speaking, reading, and
writing).
Working as the Campus Loan Assistant in the Registrar's Office of the Yale Art Gallery, I acquired
the computer and organizational skills necessary for organizing and running an art program. My tasks
included the generation of condition and inventory reports, the movement of art objects, and frequent
correspondence with curators and Yale staff. I maintained the loans to over 115 sites on campus and
am able to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities. I am proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
tools as well as Excel and TMS, the art gallery database.
The excitement of making works of art accessible and enjoyable to children and adult members of
the public is what inspired me to become involved in arts education. I am confident in my ability to

in the market. This presentation taught me how to use PowerPoint and create an appealing presentation.
After several weeks at Ellsworth I was able to assist in many sectors of the company and help out

My experience writing articles for the New York Daily News provided me with strong writing skills. I
learned which details were appealing to the public and discovered how to condense information. My

analytical coursework in a variety of departments including mathematics, computer science, and economics. I

Scouts, which continues to this day.
McKinseys focus on improving client profitability while maintaining integrity and personal values, as well as the
firms many non-profit clients, leads me to believe that I would enjoy a position with the company. Also,
McKinseys many offices around the globe open the possibility of working in a variety of exciting and demanding
environments worldwide. Though my first preference would be to work in New York, I am also intrigued by the
possibility of working in London, Dublin, or Tokyo.
In addition to my coursework I have been involved in analytical research over the course of two separate summer
internships. The first, with the Brain Research Institute at UCLA, involved using computers to examine the human
genome. My research scrutinized vast amounts of data looking for unknown genetic sites related to the
neurotransmitter protein that my lab studied, gamma amino butyric acid. In the end, I provided statistical proof
that all sites related to the processing or production of this protein had been discovered and that the lab could
therefore move ahead in its research without fear of missing a piece of the puzzle.
My second research project was conducted through the Yale Computational Linguistics Laboratory and Professor
Samual Li. I worked independently over a period of ten weeks, improving a program that I had written during the
academic year. The program broke down large written documents, including novels, in order to learn words and
functional work-pieces (morphemes) on its own. After reading the text, the program tried to break new words into
their functional pieces using what it had learned. By August, my program competed in effectiveness with a similar
program developed by tenured professors at Carnegie Mellon University.
I am confident that my quantitative skills will enable me to be extremely effective as a Business Analyst, and am
delighted by the prospect of working at a firm as respected as McKinsey. I enclose my resume and would very

Thank you letters should be sent to all those who have

one to each person who participated, personalizing the
letter to mention specific topics that were discussed.

Interviewing

If you have successfully applied for a job or internship,


your potential employer will want to meet you in an
interview setting. The interview is an opportunity for
an employer to determine if you would be able to do
the job, if you are prepared to work in that field, if you
are truly interested in working for that firm, and if you
would be a good fit. When selected for an interview,
be sure that you know exactly when and where the interview will take place, approximately how long it will
be, and which position you are being considered for.
Following the interview, do follow up with appropriate
thank-you notes to those you met. To lessen the anxiety
surrounding the interview, read through the following
chapter so that you are not caught off guard during the
interview process. You are also welcome to schedule a
career-counseling appointment at UCS.

Attire

This is a source of much confusion and anxiety. The


basic rule is, dress appropriately for the field and, if unsure, dress up. This means that one dresses conservatively (business suits) not only for conservative industries, but also for fields that are a little more casual.

For example, most faculty at Yale do not wear suits to


the classroom or lab, but most wore suits when they
were being interviewed! Some fields may appear very
casual, but in fact require their staff to wear suits at certain timessuch as charities that have to meet with donors or advertising agencies meeting with clients. Since
it is true that you only get one chance to make a first
impression, how you dress sets the initial tone for the
interview before a word is spoken. As such, it is essential that you dress in a way that will set the tone you
are looking for. The best advice here is to talk to UCS
counselors or to mentors in the particular field in which
you will be interviewing. Again, if ever in doubt, you
will never be caught out if you dress up or more conservatively than you think you really need.

Dining and
Cocktail Receptions

You may find yourself eating or socializing in the course


of an interview process. It is imperative that you exercise
good judgment, regardless of what those around you
are doing. The biggest issue here involves alcohol. Generally, the recommendation is to not drink alcohol when
meeting or socializing with those who may be evaluating youwhich is basically anyone you meet through
the interview process. You need your wits about you,
and alcohol dulls your witsperiod. If, however, your
instinct is that having an alcoholic drink in your hand
would be socially appropriate for the situation, then
keep that one drink with you throughout the event. If
you dont drink, you should never feel any compunction to do sobut dont make a big deal of it. It should
go without saying that consuming alcohol is illegal if
you are under the age of twenty-one.
As for meals, there are certain foods that are best avoided for the potential unfortunate results they can produce. Soups, salad dressings, and pasta sauces have an
uncanny capacity to attach themselves to your clothing,
especially when you are in no position to change. Avoid
these dishes. Equally, stay away from anything particularly pungent, such as garlic. You are not there to have a
great mealyou are there to get a job offer! Dont order
anything with the likelihood to be messyorder the
whole lobster after you get the job! If you are unfamiliar with a menu item, or a particular cuisine, dont be
ashamed to ask your interviewers, or a waiter, for their
recommendations. Beyond this, remember that meals
are often interviews in a different location. You may
well be peppered with questions during a meal, perhaps
by more than one person. If lunching with three people,
two of them can eat while one asks a question, but there
is only one respondent: you! Though you may be lucky,

do not expect to eat a full mealanswering their questions is far more important. However, to prevent hunger or low blood sugar, it may be a good idea to keep a
granola or candy bar conveniently close, as this can be
quickly consumed (in private) during a quick break in

Mock Interviews

Case Interviews

These are practice interviews, often conducted by


counselors at UCS or by other university faculty or
administrators. Students can request these mocks in
order to prepare themselves for the real thing and can
receive valuable feedback on their performance and tips
for improvement.

First-Round Interviews

These may take place at UCS or at an organizations facility. They are usually relatively brief (typically thirty to
sixty minutes). They may include some form of assessment appropriate to the industry (e.g., a case, a teaching demonstration, etc.), although this is not common
in most fields. Questions tend to be of a general nature
(see below for typical categories), and the goal of the
interviewer is usually to determine if the candidate is
someone who merits a second-round interview. Since
most first-round interviews do not lead directly to job
offers, your goal should be to secure your place in the
second round. The key to success is thorough preparation (not scripting) and practice. Interviewing is a
learned art for most of us, and just as you wouldnt go
into an exam without reviewing all your materials, you
need to work at preparing for this practical test.

Usually confined to the consulting and financial industries (see the section on employer questions below),
cases may occupy a part of an interview or may fill all
the allotted time. A situation, problem, or data set is
presented, and you will be asked to comment upon it,
analyze it, offer proposals, or come up with a solution.
This is a very specialized form of interview and needs
to be approached in a very specific way. UCS sponsors
presentations on case interviews every year; counselors can provide mock case interviews; and there are
many web and hard-copy resources available that deal
directly with the subject. The key is practice. Familiarity will breed confidence, and well-founded confidence
is essential in this situation.

Behavioral Interviews

Behavioral interviews are quite common and essentially

Stress interviews are less popular now than they


were in the mid 90s, but it is still possible to encounter

It is considered unethical to accept a job offer and later


choose to decline; doing so reflects poorly on you, on
Yale, and on UCS. Do not accept an offer unless you
are committed. After you accept an offer, inform other
employers you have applied to or interviewed with that
you are withdrawing your name from their pool of candidates.

Once you have successfully completed your job or internship search, it is important to thank all those who
have assisted you in the process. Those who you have
used as references and for networking contacts generally
want to hear about your success and know they were of
assistance. Maintaining these relationships will benefit
you in the long run as your personal network grows.
