CHE 111P_Chemical Calculations 1
Direction: Solve the following problems on material balance. Box your final answer.

Methane is flowing in a pipeline at the rate of 20.7 m3/min at 30C and 250kPa. To check the
flow rate, He is to be introduced at 25C and 300kPa. What is the minimum number of cm3
per minute of He must be introduced if the minimum detectable downstream concentration
of He in the methane is 10 ppm?

A crystallizer contains 6,000 lb of aqueous solution of anhydrous sodium sulphate

(concentration 29.6 wt %) at 104C. The solution is cooled to 20C to crystallize out

the desired Na2SO410H2O. The remaining solution (the mother liquor) is found to
contain 16.1 % anhydrous sodium sulfate. What is the weight of this mother liquor?
A solution composed of 50% ethanol (EtOH), 10% methanol (MeOH), and 40% water
(H2O) is fed at the rate of 100 kg/hr into a separator that produces one stream at the
rate of 60 kg/hr with the composition of 80% EtOH, 15% MeOH, and 5% H2O, and a
second stream of unknown composition. Calculate the composition (in %) of the
three compounds in the unknown stream and its flow rate in kg/hr.
cellulose solution contains 5.2% cellulose by weight in water. How many kilograms
of 1.2% solution are required to dilute 100kg of 5.2% solution to 4.2%?
A water solution contains 60% Na2S2O2 together with 1% soluble impurity. Upon
cooling to 10C, Na2S2O2-5H2O crytallizes out. The solubility of this hydrate is 1.4lb
Na2S2O2-5H2O/lb free water. The crystals removed carry as adhering solution 0.06
lb solution/ lb crystals. These are dried to remove the remaining water (but not the
water of hydration). The final dry Na2S2O2-5H2O crystals must nt contain more than
0.1% impurity. To meet this specification, the original solutiom, before cooling, is
further diluted with water. On the basis of 100 lb of original solution, calculate: (a)
The amount of water added before cooling (b)The percentage recovery of the
Na2S2O2 in the dried hydrated crystals.
A cereal product containing 55% water is made at the rate of 500 kg/hr. You need to
dry the product so that it contains only 30%water. How much water has to be
evaporated per hour?
Wet air containing 4mol% of water vapor is passed through a column of calcium
chloride pellets. The pellets adsorb 97wt% of the water and none of the other
constituents of the air. The column packing was initially dry and had a mass of
3.40kg. Following 5hrs operation, the pellets are reweighed and found to have a
mass of 3.54kg. Calculate the molar flow rate (mol/h) of the feed gas and the mole
fraction of water vapor in the product gas.
In order to meet a certain octane number specification, it is necessary to produce
gasoline containing 80%w isooctane and 20%w n-heptane. How many liters of a
high-octane gasoline containing 90%w isooctane and 10%w n-heptane must be
blended with a straight-run gasoline containing 65%w isooctane and 35%w nheptane to obtain 10,000 liters of desired gasoline? The specific gravity of each of
the liquids is 0.805.

A dairy produces casein which when wet contains 23.7%moisture. They sell this for
$8.00/100lb. They also dry this casein to produce a product containing 10%
moisture. Their drying costs are $0.80/100lb water removed. What should be the
selling price of the dried casein to maintain the same margin of profit?

The pressure difference between two air tanks A and B is measured by a U tube
manometer, with mercury as the manometer liquid. The barometric pressure is 700 mm
Hg.

b. What is the gauge pressure in the tank A ?
