Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM Architecture, Structure & MEP
This session will cover Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration workflow using Building Information
Modeling (BIM). Learn how to create multidisciplinary design of Architectural, Structural and MEP BIM
models and how to work together for design collaboration. Learn how to dynamically link the Architectural,
Structural and MEP BIM models to determine and optimize a buildings construction, for example:
addressing clash detection and sequencing construction simulation, to calculating material/quantity
takeoffs to be ready for construction phase.
Since 1982 which is the birthday of AutoCAD in this world, that is
st
the 1 CAD revolution started in AEC history (Architectural
Engineering and Construction). Time has already passed for
almost 32 years that people in this area changed their design and
drafting processes from hand drawing to use computer to do their
design and create design and working drawings. The world still
changes with technology, these 32 years scientists invented a lot
of new technology related to Computer Aided Design which AEC
also involved as one of them who use CAD technology. We have
new technology of computer, we have new technology of
software and the way that computer and software work
simultaneously which produce and increase a lot of performance
and productivity significantly.

What is BIM ?
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an intelligent 3D modelbased process that provides insight for
creating and managing building and infrastructure projects faster, more economically, and with less
environmental impact. And be able to explore a projects key physical and functional characteristics
digitallybefore its built. So its not just about having information in the model. Its really about all the
powerful things you can do with that information.
The coordinated, consistent information used throughout the BIM process helps architects, engineers,
contractors, civil engineers, and owners to see, prior to construction, what their design will look like and
more importantly, how it will perform.

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

Using the BIM process, the intelligent information

informs the building process along the way. This
visibility enables all members of the project team
to contribute to its success through better
coordination, improved accuracy, and the ability
to make more informed decisions earlier in the
process.
For example, the model can help designers
convey design intent to all stakeholders, resulting
in more predictable outcomes- fewer errors and
less waste. Or, using the intelligent information in
the model, analysis can be conducted early in the
process. This can allow you to see if the design is
optimized to meet or exceed mandates,
regulations, or other objectives.
As BIM continues to gain momentum in the AEC industry, more and more architects, contractors and
even owners are demanding the use of BIM to support building design, construction, and lifecycle
management.

BIM Benefits
Some benefits of BIM can be
experienced on a users first few
projects, such as reduced errors and
omissions, rework and cycle time of
workflows. Others require longer time
frames to demonstrate their value,
such as reduced cost, schedule and
claims, or maintaining repeat
business and increasing profits.
Source: Smart Market Report by McGraw Hill Construction, 2012

The top percentage gainers include:

Increased profits: this rating expanded by 70%- from 21% and the next-to-last position in 2009 to
36% in 2012. This could drive use of BIM in the future- as BIM processes become more
standardized and the initial costs of adoption and implementation are amortized, firms using BIM
have the ability to see a sustained impact on profitability.

Fewer claims and litigation: this benefit grew by 40% from 2009, growing from 20% in 2009 to
28% in 2012. This indicates a growing belief that as more problems are avoided during construction
and claims measurably diminish, this will be a reliable benefit.

Reducing overall project duration: this metric requires a substantial number if completed projects
in order to be validated, and if the trend of increased importance continues- growing from 27% in
2009 to 37% in 2012- reduced project duration will become a powerful ingredient of a quantifiable
BIM benefit calculation.

You have already known Whats BIM ? and BIM

Benefits. At this stage, if you start your curious and
interest to understand how to implement BIM to your
business, you need to look next to the CAD to BIM
step. CAD to BIM is the step that you need to
understand what is the BIM software that will serve
your BIM purpose and understand the way each
software will work for your Design, Drafting,
Analysis, Simulation, Collaboration and
Coordination. Then you can use that knowledge to
plan to use with your work process to replace your
existing 2D traditional CAD step by step.

Typical life cycle of teams involved

With the typical life cycle of teams

involved, we will take a look at how to
use Revit to perform CAD to BIM for:
-

Architectural Design
Structural Design
MEP Design

When we finish with the design and

documentation phase, we will use all
those 3D BIM model design for
Coordination and Collaboration for
Pre-construction and construction
process.
(MEP = Mechanical, Electrical, Piping and Plumbing)

Revit for Architectural Design

1. Revit Interface
Revit follows the standard Microsoft
Windows application interface with pull
down menus etc. In addition to that,
Revit Architecture makes working on your
building project as much like working on a
building as possible. If you know
something about buildings, then you
already know a lot about working in Revit
Architecture.
The interface is arranged in these 5 main
areas.

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

First, the workspace this is where views of the building database, such as floor plans, sections,
elevation, and schedules are presented. The work space both reports information from the database and
as a means for you to input data into your project.
If youre used to working in AutoCAD, youre used to using a command line in order to invoke tools but
in Revit Architecture we use a graphical user interface. So in order to invoke a tool, you just click on its
button. As I select a tool, the Options Bar, located directly on Ribbon.
The Options Bar presents just the specific option and information you need to tailor the tool to the
specification that you intend. This reduces screen clutter thereby improving ease of use.
The status bar displays useful hints for what Revit Architecture is expecting you to do next. If I want to
know what input Revit Architecture is waiting for, this is the place to look.
The most important part of Revit Architecture is the project browser. It serves as a table of contents for
my project. This is where Revit Architecture will organize all of my views, be them 2D or 3D, graphical or
non-graphical, construction documents or designs. Because it is so important, weve made it function just
like something that youre probably already familiar with, Microsoft Windows Explorer.

2. Conceptual Design in Revit Architecture

Concept of Building is an idea what an architect
sells to the owner. The traditional method may
be drawing it on a sheet of paper or using some
other digital tool like CAD. When we start to
have 3D model software, architects started to
use as a tool to show 3 dimension of their
conceptual design. But most of previous
software provide not enough information, it may
provide area, volume of model and a little bit
more such as ability to do visualize presentation
but not useful for further step usage. Once
concept is approved the design has to be rebuilt
for different phases of building.
The concept design in Revit architecture is
an easy to use parametric tool. User can
create organic or Non organic forms of the
building with multiple options. Once the
design is selected the same model data is
further taken to design development and
rest of the building design processes. The
key take away is the Workflow of data from
one phase to another phase is seamless.

3. SUN Path Study

It is almost impossible to do
Solar/Shadow Study in the real world
scenario based on 2D information.
Use the Revit Conceptual Mass Study
or Revit Project to do in built
Solar/Shadow Study for a Single day
or for the Whole year without the need
to recreate the Geometry to better
understand the impact of Solar
Radiations on the Building Hence
Design Better Green Buildings With
Rich BIM data.
4.

Use the real world Building components

Use the real world Building components like
Walls, Doors, Windows, Roofs, Floor, Stairs etc.
which understand the Design and properties
specific to an Architect needs. Eg, A window or a
Door can be added to a Wall as it understands
the relation with the Wall.
This also creates data of that component which
inserted into model such as we can count for all
of the doors, windows, walls in the project/model.
We also will have 3D model for presentation.

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

5. Rooms/Room Colour Fills/ Room Schedule

Architects do Specify usage of a Room
and compute area of each Room which by
traditional way is time consuming and error
prone. Also taking into account the
changes in the room areas during design
phase of the project.
Revit Automatically Computes Room area
and Volume from the enclosed building
component Walls and also updates the
values automatically incase wall position
change, therefore saves lot of time and
effort to manually update the values.

6. Documentation and Sections

Too much time is being spent on low-value CAD, documentation, and coordination chores, thus
taking staff away from higher-value work. Time spent on low-value CAD production and coordination
issues is detracting from design and documentation quality. Revit Architecture supports file sharing
with those products via the DWG Bridge and because Autodesk owns DWG, you can expect that
your files will maintain their integrity during transfers.

Revit supports users to work on the design and let the documentation be taken care by it-self.

Fully automate the production of drawings and schedules through a single integrated building
information model
Create complete documentation without worrying about coordination errors resulting from
redundant drawings or other information

7. Schedules/Quantities
Quantifying Building Elements is a tedious and time consuming, error prone job.
Revit supports users to work on the design and let the schedules/quantities be taken care by itself.
Fully automate the production of Quantities and schedules through a single integrated building
information model. Quantities such as Doors/Windows/Columns etc. etc. are always up to
date as per the Design in Revit.
Any change anywhere in the Model will update the Quantities automatically.

8. Rendering & Walkthroughs

Creating Visualization needs
additional Skills and software
tools and recreation of design
data from 2D to 3D.which is time
consuming.
Using Revit , Visualization is a
part of workflow. Where users
can create Renderings and
walkthroughs with ease as well
as Export the 3D Scenes with
Materials etc directly to 3DS
max. Hence create the
Visualization which meets the
Design intent of an Architect for
winning Business.

Revit for Structural Design

1. Adding Elevations & Grids

Traditionally, Structural Plans are built off from 2D floor
plans given by an architect. This process involves creating
disparate 2D drawings for Structural Plan sets. The
operation is tedious, repetitive and prone to errors.
By using the existing 2D drawings as live references, users
can create building information models that are dynamic,
intelligent and easy to update. The building information
model can also be a rich source of information, including plans, elevation views, sections,
quantities, etc.
Or we can create our building projects from the very start using Parametric objects features such
as Grids, Levels, Reference Planes, etc.
The most effective way of BIM concept is we can collaborate Architecture design with Structural
design. It is no need to recreate structural components again, we can link what architects has
already design using Revit Architecture and bring to structural model for further usage such as
grids, elevations, columns, and slabs. This method we will get model both of in 2D and 3D plus all
of component information.

Architecture, Structure & MEP

2. Adding Structural Columns, Structural Walls

In a 2D-based workflow, lines, arcs, and other
CAD primitives are used to represent building
components. Whether it is a column, beams, wall
or slab, users spend a lot of time creating
representations of building components that do
not even have intelligence and object properties
that are needed in other stages of the project.
Use the real world structural building components
like Columns, Beams, Walls, Floor Slabs etc.
which contain parameters specific to a Structural
Engineers needs.
(i.e. Columns have different structural parameters
such as material, base level, end releases, etc.)
Information that will prove useful for Construction
Documentation, Quantities, and even Structural
Analyses.

3. Adding Slabs

Revit for MEP Mechanical System Design (Mechanical, Electrical, Piping & Plumbing)

Autodesk Revit MEP software works the way engineers and designers of mechanical, electrical, and
plumbing systems think, with tools to intuitively create, design, and document building systems.
Purpose-built for building information modeling (BIM), Autodesk Revit MEP enables engineers and
designers to visualize their designs before they are built, helping to minimize design coordination
errors between the engineering and architecture teams working on integrated projects. With
parametric change technology, any change is automatically coordinated everywhere in the project,
including model views, drawing sheets, schedules, sections, and plans. Design and documentation
stay coordinated, consistent, and complete. Partner applications and built-in tools for building
performance analysis support better design decision making for more cost-effective and
environmentally sustainable designs.

Linked Models And 3D Viewing

Autodesk Revit MEP allows the MEP

engineer to utilize information directly
from the architects Autodesk Revit
Architecture model.

Linking to the Autodesk Revit

Architecture model allows for quick
and easy updating of the model and
close collaboration with the
architectural team.

Creating a full building model allows the MEP engineer to simulate the systems in the
building before they are built.

Preparing The Model For HVAC Load Calculations

Autodesk Revit MEP is an intuitive design tool that works the way engineers think. The
parametric nature of Autodesk Revit MEP lets user focus more time on the design. Design
documentation within Autodesk Revit MEP provides me with valuable information to help
optimize by system designs. Information extracted from the linked architectural model can be
utilized to generate information for building performance analysis.

Autodesk Revit MEP allows the user to utilize the information in the 3D architectural
building model quickly and easily.

The ability to quickly create spaces and zones with area, volume, and other load
information saves time and effort in manually entering building information into a load
calculation software.

Using Spaces and Zones to create an analytical model in Autodesk Revit MEP assures
that information is accurate and up to date. Properties are updated automatically as the
architectural model changes.

Autodesk Revit MEP has integrated heating and cooling load analysis tools
which let you quickly perform an energy analysis, evaluate loads, and produce
time/date-stamped heating and cooling load reports for a project.

Using Load Calculation Information For Equipment Selection

Autodesk Revit MEP allows me to create a graphical representation of the cooling load
requirements around a model. This expedites the process of equipment selection by
eliminating the need to refer back and forth to outside documents and calculations.
-

Data-driven design calculated values of engineering design requirements such as loads

are driven by model geometry and the leverage to guide layout of systems.

Create room color-fill plans by using design parameters to communicate design intent
visually, rather than deciphering spreadsheets and schedules.

15

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

Color fills are directly linked to the model so the plans update automatically as design
changes are made. Create any number of schemes and easily maintain them for the life
of a project. The example shown here displays heating and cooling zones in an easily
interpreted color map.

Placing Equipment And Terminals

Autodesk Revit MEPs ability to
track information live in the
model will allow users to make
better and quicker design
decisions on the fly, resulting in
a better design and better
coordinated documentation.
True connectivity between
scheduled equipment and the
design requirements of the
rooms to be served promotes
informed and intuitive design
and layout decisions. The
dynamic nature of the
conditional formatting in the schedule also lets the me use it as a tool during the design
process, and not simply as a static list of equipment specifications.

Schedule information is dynamically updated with changes in the model.

Tracking schedule information within the model as it is being developed allows the user
to identify areas where changes need to be made or deficiencies exist.

Mechanical functionality offers 3D modeling for ductwork and piping to create HVAC
systems. Intuitive layout tools make 3D modeling fast and easy for even the first-time
user to master.

Duct Auto-routing
If you prefer, you can let Autodesk Revit MEP place the ductwork for you. Of course this is
faster process which you can then modify if necessary. By simply selecting an air terminal
that is assigned to a system, Autodesk Revit MEP highlights the entire system and prompts
me with possible routing solutions for the ductwork. And if I dont like that solution, I can
quickly scan through other possible solutions that meet my design requirements.
Or you can use tradition manual duct drawing up to your desire.
-

Auto-routing is a direct result of predefined design requirements and significantly reduces

time spent on system layout.

Create virtual systems of interconnected elements and let Autodesk Revit MEP suggest
and populate routing paths.

16

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

Save time by eliminating click-by-click selection of paths, yet still have the ability to do so
when needed.

Ducting And Sizing Mechanical Systems

Autodesk Revit MEPs modeling engine allows users to quickly and easily create accurate
duct layouts. Transitions and fittings are placed automatically, and adapt as changes are
made. Duct modeled in Autodesk Revit MEP is intelligent, tracking flow information from
connections to air terminals that can then be used in automatically sizing and scheduling.
Annotation of objects in Autodesk Revit MEP is automatically derived from the information in
the model, and as such, updates as changes are made.

Flow information based on connected elements can be utilized for analysis, scheduling,
and sizing saving significant effort in manual tracking and calculations.

Duct types can be defined to automatically place fittings appropriate to the users needs.

Duct sizing is automated based on the flow of connected objects. Sizing can be based
on a variety of flow and geometric criteria. Changes in properties can easily be reflected
by recalculating duct sizes.
Built-in calculators are available for sizing mains, branches and even whole systems at
time. Sizing and pressure load calculations are done according to industry-standard
methods and specifications built in Autodesk Revit MEP. System sizing tools are
integrated with the layout tools and instantly update the size and design parameters of
duct and pipe elements without file exchange or third-party applications.

Duct Color Scheme Legend

As with spaces and zones, the ability to generate a color-fill representation of a duct system
produces a visual representation of design data. This visual representation is a great aid to
the user in understanding the system model and making intelligent design decisions.

17

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

The ability to utilize

flow information to
graphically represent
the properties of a duct
system can allow the
user to quickly identify
problem areas and
remedy them.

The great variety of

information that can be
quickly accessed
through graphical
representation can
save significant time
and effort.

System Inspector
Working in an integrated design
environment; another key benefit
of such a work environment is
the ability to gain immediate
feedback of your design
information. Here you can see
that by using the integrated
System Inspector, you can
quickly review design
specifications of the air supply
system you just laid out.
Display the critical flow path for
branches main trunks, or entire
systems. Quickly and easily
identify areas of the system with
the highest pressure loss so that you can modify the design for maximum economy and
efficiency. Interactively change fittings, shape, or configuration and instantly see the update
static pressure loss and changes to flow properties.

Creating Mechanical Sheets

With Autodesk Revit MEP the entire building model and complete set of design documents is
in an integrated database, where everything is interconnected. Bidirectional association
ensures that each view is directly linked to the model resulting in the reliable, coordinated,
and consistent design and documentation that characterizes building information modeling.
-

Automatically generate plan, section, elevation, detail, 3D and schedule views that
accurately capture the design information in your design model. All views of the model

18

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

are synchronized at all times from a common database where changes made to any one
view propagate to all views simultaneously. Coordination is managed by change
propagations within the model.
-

Automatic sheet drawing references mean that no section, elevation or callout references
the wrong drawing or sheet, and all data and graphics ,details, schedules, drawing, and
sheets in the drawing set are current and coordinated.

2. Electrical System Design

Not only does Autodesk Revit MEP
provide a competitive advantage for
mechanical engineering, but also for
electrical engineering as well. Check
out how quickly an electrical power
circuitry can be created. And take a
look at the amount of design data
Autodesk Revit MEP keeps track for
electrical specifications.

Autodesk Revit MEP

automatically calculates
electrical properties from
circuits saving you time.

Inserting electrical devices Autodesk Revit MEP knows that a light should appear on
a ceiling and a light switch should show up on a wall.

Automatically creating circuits enables Autodesk Revit MEP to generate panel

schedules dynamically.

Minimize errors in electrical design by using circuits to track loads, number of attached
devices, and circuit lengths. Define wire types, voltage ranges, distribution systems, and
demand factors to help ensure the compatibility of electrical connections in your design
and prevent overloads and mismatched voltages.

Create Lighting and Power Layout

-

Ease of design layout AUTODESK REVIT MEP can automatically generate wiring for
defined circuits but provides you with the flexibility to manually generate wiring if your
design requires unique circuiting layouts.

Data-driven design multi-circuit wire runs are generated automatically based on

electrical layout and defined circuit specifications.

Annotation is based on typical industry conventions.

Wall hosted components (such as receptacles) in Autodesk Revit orient themselves to

the wall geometry automatically, saving significant time in tedious drafting tasks.

19

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

Circuit Mechanical Equipment

Not only does Autodesk Revit MEP coordinate architectural and engineering data, but
mechanical and electrical engineering data can even be coordinated. Here you see an
electrical circuit properties being revised on the fly as a result of connecting mechanical
equipment to the system. Now if the mechanical engineer needs to make changes to the
electrical requirements of his equipment, those changes automatically impact the electrical
system design.

Edit Panels And Create Panel Schedules

You have full editing capabilities. When working in Autodesk Revits integrated design
environment, a change anywhere is a change everywhere. All Autodesk Revit MEP model
information is stored in one place. As a result, any information that gets changed is effectively
changed throughout the entire model. Parametric technology automatically manages all
change propagation. Here you can see I can quickly size wires, which optimizes my circuits,
resulting in accurate panel specifications. All design data stays fully interconnected with the
model.

Automatically create panel schedules as you lay out your design. Balance loads or change
circuits for a device directly through the panel schedule. Easily edit the panel circuits through
a built-in panel circuit editor.

3. Plumbing / Fire Protection System Design

Create Plumbing Layout

Placement of fixtures allows the
designer to visually verify fit as well as
select content based on design
parameters such as fixture units or
other manufacturer or project-critical
specifications.
Plumbing systems make tracking
information such as flow and elevation
easy and quick, ensuring that
plumbing designers have accurate and updated information for their designs.

20

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

Create Fire Protection System Layout

-

Autodesk Revit MEP allows for accurate 3D modeling of Fire Protection Systems.

Hosted Sprinkler components orient themselves appropriately to their usage.

The ability to include Fire Protection systems allows for coordination with mechanical and
electrical systems within the Autodesk Revit model.

4. Documentation and Sections, Schedules and Quantities

Autodesk Revit MEP the entire building model and complete set of design documents is in an
integrated database, where everything is interconnected. Therefore you can rest assured that the
resulting design documentation is reliable, coordinated and consistent with the actual design
itself. Thats building information modeling for MEP systems design.

Revit MEP supports file sharing with those products via the DWG Bridge and because Autodesk
owns DWG, you can expect that your files will maintain their integrity during transfers.
Revit supports users to work on the design and let the documentation be taken care by it-self.

Fully automate the production of drawings and schedules through a single integrated
building information model.

Create complete documentation without worrying about coordination errors resulting from
redundant drawings or other information.

Creating section views in Autodesk Revit MEP allows designers to spend their time
worrying about design issues rather than drawing and updating section views. Sections
views can be used to make design changes directly to the model. With the bi-directional
link between views in Autodesk Revit MEP and the model database updates are always
reflected as soon as a change is made no matter the view.

Scheduling in Autodesk Revit MEP puts access to all of the rich design data in your
building information model at your finger tips. Easy to use intuitive schedules allow
information to be extracted and updated in real time as the model progresses. Schedules
can be used as design aides and for final documentation purposes. Quantities such as
Ducts, Pipes, Fittings, Electrical components, etc. are always up to date as per the

21

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

building model Design in Revit. Any change anywhere in the Model will update the
Quantities automatically.

Making design changes in any active view is both convenient and time saving. No matter
the view you prefer to work in, the building information model is always being updated
and all views refreshed to contain the latest documentation. Ensuring that sections
match information on the plan is no longer a concern.

Leveraging the information available in the building model database we are able to
quickly and easily prepare our construction documentation. Because the model and all
associated views are linked updates happen automatically across our documentation set.
Generating sheets ready for plotting is as simple as dragging and dropping the view. Automatic
sheet references mean checking callout references is a thing of the past.

Coordination
These are challenging times for
the construction industry. With
fewer construction starts due to
projects being cancelled or put on
hold, the playing field is a lot more
competitive. Construction firms
are a looking for ways to
differentiate themselves and to do
more with less fewer resources,
lower fees, and smaller budgets.
New business can be won by
demonstrating competence and
inspiring confidence through
conceptual modeling,
visualization, and thorough initial
estimating, while assuring yourself
that you can build the project at
the bid submitted.
Autodesk tools can be used to create the conceptual building information model (BIM) and communicate
the design intent.
The Bidding Process
At the bidding stage, BIM can be used to set a baseline for the estimations, verifying the quantities for
initial estimates and validating the bid data received from subcontractors.
Autodesk tools such as the Revit family of products and Civil 3D can be used to develop the
conceptual model of design intent, into a construction model. This stage of the modeling process
adds. The level of detail necessary to analyze the constructability of the project, including splitting
columns into levels, and floor slabs into individual pours, for example.

22

Multidisciplinary Design & Collaboration using BIM

Architecture, Structure & MEP

Sharing the BIM with bidding subcontractors, in a CADneutral format (NWD or DWF for viewing in
Navisworks Freedom or Design Review), provides them with greater project understanding and better
insight into the building design, which fosters collaboration and more accurate bid submittal.
Large construction projects can involve any
number of stakeholders, from the owner, to the
design team, to the general contractor and
specialist subcontractors. The design software
being used can be similarly diverse. Sharing
models between stakeholders can therefore be
of limited value without a seat of the authoring
software, therefore often relying on 2D
drawings as a common means for
communicating intent.
Navisworks replaces this outdated means of
communication by allowing models from
various design applications to be integrated
within the same scene. This intuitive
environment allows all involved to share a
common project vision, making it easier to see
how their part of the project fits within the
overall design. This aids understanding and
fosters a better collaborative relationship
between stakeholders.
The project seen here has been modeled in
AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit Architecture, Revit
Structure and Revit MEP. As the project
progresses and specialist trades develop their
own construction documentation using
whichever design application is appropriate to
their industry and workflow Navisworks
allows those designs to be combined with the
overall project model. The complex models
created through the Building Information
Modeling process can result in large file sizes.
However, Navisworks innovative technology
compresses these files for interactive
visualization and smooth real time
walkthrough, so you can navigate, explore,
and review large, complex 3D models on
standard PCs. Furthermore, you can realize
the value of BIM projects without requiring
seats of the authoring design applications and
the necessary skills to use such software. The
integrated project can be distributed in the
highly compressed and secure Navisworks
NWD format, providing access to the model
and associated building information using the
free viewer, Navisworks Freedom.

Spatial Coordination and Clash Detection

Building Information Modeling presents the opportunity to spatially coordinate all of the different
project disciplines. And although there may be additional overheads in creating these models, the
benefits of fully coordinated designs includes confidence that everything will fit together, allowing for
more offsite fabrication and onsite installation; fewer onsite RFIs and resultant change orders,
which leads to fewer project delays; and ultimately reduced risk. The Navisworks Clash Detective
feature realizes this potential and demonstrates one of the real powers of BIM in construction.
Clash Detective works by
looking for issues between
specific groups of model
objects, or disciplines. The idea
being that you define a test
looking for issues where you
might expect to find them,
based on past experiences for
example, and Navisworks will
do the hard work of searching
through the
complete project model,
identifying any issues. This is
quicker and more accurate than
the traditional manual method
of looking over plotted drawings
on light boxes.
Communicating the necessary changes can either be done
through a published version of the Navisworks model, or
through a report such as HTML. The report contains details of
the performed test as well as each result. This includes
details of the clashing items, the source file name, any
associated comments that have been added, and also a
screenshot of the issue. This allows the responsible design
team to locate the item in the original design application,
understand what the issue is, and make the necessary
changes.
Once the design file is replaced with the modified version,
opening the Navisworks file will load in the latest version and
the clash test can be updated. Navisworks reruns the test
against the uptodate project model, and will automatically
update the result statuses if the changes have resolved the
issues. Its also worth noting that Navisworks will also identify
any new clashes that result from the design modifications.
Navisworks can also be used to find duplicate geometry or
test for clearances. Duplicate geometry may result from
modeling errors, and are important to find when taking
quantities and calculating
estimates from the dataset. Clearance tests differ from Hard
clash tests in that rather than looking for physical
intersections between objects you looking for instances where

an object comes within a specific distance of another object. An example of this would be checking for
adequate clearance around a piping system in order to insulate it.
Sectioning tools can be used to help see issues more clearly. Occasionally you will be able to see that
an object in the model is involved in multiple clashes. Rather than treating these as separate clashes,
you can automatically group them together in order to treat them as a single issue, which aids clash
management and saves time, while maintaining an audit of all clashes found.
Measurement tools are available to understand the distances between objects, including a feature
which calculates the closest position of two selected objects. This may be useful when objects run in
different planes, for example, where a clearance issue may only be at a specific point where the
objects cross, and may therefore be discounted.
Project Scheduling and 4D Sequencing
The traditional visualization of a construction schedule is the Gantt chart, however when youre
dealing with thousands of construction tasks its difficult to see how they all impact each other.
Especially if you wish to see what effect a delay in task X has on tasks Y and Z, and the subsequent
knockon effects.
Construction planners are currently using applications such as Primavera Project Management, ASTA
Powerproject, or Microsoft Project to create their schedules, and functionality exists within those
applications to carry out What If? scenarios. Through BIM you can now take this further, bringing the
project schedule into a digital reality. Utilizing the 3D models created as part of the BIM process and
the existing construction schedule, the two can be united in Navisworks to create a 4D sequence
(where 4D = 3D + Time).
The models created through BIM are incredibly
detailed, and the rich property information they
inherit make it easier to group objects that are to
be constructed together, for example all of the first
floor columns, or structural framing. And by
creating a construction model, you can model
building components in the way that theyll be
built. Take floor slabs for example. Traditionally a
floor slab would be modeled as a single object,
though in reality it will be constructed from several
sections, or pours. When creating a construction
model from a conceptual model, floor slabs are
one example where objects can be split up to
reflect a greater level of reality. These objects and
groups in the construction model can then be
assigned to the corresponding task in the
schedule. When the sequence is played back you
see a simulation of the buildings construction.
This allows you to visualize the construction
process, identify areas of conflict between
disciplines, or areas of congestion on the project
site, and provides the opportunity to adjust and
finetune the schedule.
The 4D sequence can also include staging of
materials, positioning and movement of cranes,

vehicle access, and so on, allowing you to

experience the entire construction process.
Once the schedule has been linked with the
model, you can quickly and easily synchronize
with modifications in the schedule, and simulate
various What If? scenarios. This provides
construction planners with more time to optimize
the schedule, giving confidence that the building
can be built to this schedule, and helping you to
manage risk and avoid costly onsite delays.
The Navisworks simulation can be played,
paused, and reviewed at various stages
throughout the project, and viewed from multiple
vantage points. Simulations can also be exported
as rendered movies which can be used for client
presentations, or in helping raise public
awareness and
acceptance.

Conclusion
While architects and architectural engineering firms are adopting Autodesk BIM solutions for design, the
power of BIM can be truly leveraged in construction. Autodesk Revit products can be used to efficiently
create accurate, datarich models from 2D designs. These facilitate Estimators to use Autodesk Quantity
Takeoff, and spend less time counting, and more time estimating; Construction Managers can better
manage risk by using Autodesk Navisworks Manage to digitally coordinate disparate project disciplines
before work begins onsite; Construction Planners can use Autodesk Navisworks Simulate for 4D
sequencing in order to visualize the construction site and optimize the construction schedule; and finally
Owner Operators can use Autodesk Navisworks Review to link the model to their operations and
maintenance systems.
These Autodesk BIM solutions can not only help you to manage the entire construction process, they also
allow you to set your business apart from the competition demonstrating your competence, providing
confidence in your estimation, and ultimately helping you to win new, and repeat business.
