DISCRIMINATION

Issue Analysis
In the movie Brick Lane, the issue discrimination can be found in several aspects such as
religion and gender. A terrorist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group upon New
York City. Since Muslims live in a relatively big number in Brick Lane Street, thus, racial
tension is an issue that can't be overlooked. Consequently, the attack that later launched by
Muslims terrorist in the movie makes the situation even worse, it changed the lives of
Muslims not only in Brick Lane, but for the entire country. Moreover, Brick Lane is a story
that based on Bangladeshi traditions and culture, we can see that most of the Bangladeshi
immigrants are still discriminate against women.
In reality, discrimination against is a common issue in a multi-racial country. The thought of
self-superior and misunderstood between different ethnics, religions, and so on, is one of the
main causes of discrimination. However, gender discrimination happened differently in
different countries based on the beliefs and attitudes shaped by the entire social nature.
Argument
In reality, discrimination is often when a person judge another person or thing based on the
group, class or category that they belongs rather than on individual merit. They act as if the
person they see is the representation of the whole group. The person might need to bear others
aggressive behavior, even though the person may be an innocent party. To combat this,
people must have clear understanding between each other, and try their best to solve the
conflict.
Reasoning
In the movie of Brick Lane, Brick Lane Street is a place in which most Bangladeshi
immigrants are concentrated. However, Bangladeshis are not only the resident there. There
are also residents who came from different ethnicity living around. In such a multi-racial city,
where Bangladeshis have equal influence to the local citizens, the native feels threatened.
There was a group that led by white man which named Lion Hearts. They were worried that
Muslims would take away their street, which in other words, they could not stand the Islamic
culture penetrates into their life. Thus, flyers that have been distributed by Lion Hearts can be
easily found in their community. To point against Lion Hearts accusation, Karim and his
friend formed their own group which named it as Bengal Tigers. This conflict has been
stepped up since the attack happened. The non-Muslim people threw tantrums at the people
who are of the same religion as the terrorists. In the non-Muslims' eyes, Muslim became the
synonym of terrorism. They regarded people of other religion as a group but not as an
individual. However, Karim did try his best to overturn the possible fact of Islamic Terrorists.
He wanted to prove that all the negative thoughts of non-Muslims towards Islam were all
wrong. He encouraged the other Muslims to band together and fight against the hate towards
them and their religion. He thought that this is the best way to defend themselves. Karim was
more aggressive than Chanu. For Chanu, this is another way round. During the community
meeting, Chanu spoke out his opinion against extremist militancy, he think that Muslim is a
belief that are worth defending, in favor of a faith not based on politics but in the heart. Chanu
is able to view this process with far more humanistic caution and historical context than
Karim can or will.

From the movie we can found that, in Bangladesh culture, women are experiencing gender
inequality in their community. When Nazneen was young, she told herself that she will not
get married and been sent far away from home. But her mother told her that women can't
escape from their faith, the faith they born to have, and the test of life is to endure. Naznees's
mother said before, if she been given a chance to make a choice, she will choose to be a man
instead of born to become a woman. At the end, her mother choose to commit suicide.
Chanu, the educated man with a lot of certificate hang on the wall, always feel proud of his
home countrys history and culture. Just like women are not allowed to go out, women are not
allowed to work in Bangladesh. Even though Chanu had already immigrant to British for so
many years, he bring these tradition to London as well. When the first time Nazneen told
Chanu that she want to do some sewing job at home, Chanu choose not to answer his wife.
When Nazneen brought home a sewing machine, although Chanu didn't spoke out anything to
stop her Nazneen from doing the job. After that, Chanu tell his wife that he able to accept his
wife is working because he is an educated man, but actually he is not comfortable with this
idea, he feels like losing the pride of a man.. Here Chanu certifies again that Bangladeshi
women are not encouraged to work just because it brings the meaning that the husband cant
feed the family well.
Case
Discrimination against culture is a common issue in a multi-racial country. A Muslim woman,
known as Aleen, who studied a media-related course and have been looking for a job related
to what she studied for. Unfortunately she was rejected by many companies because she wear
a hijab, which the company saying that it doesnt look good when she have to dress in
corporate clothing. She was even told by some company that she might get a job if she was
willing to get rid of the hijab. This is a discrimination over Muslims women, like all women
in the country, should be treated equally.

Gender inequality is a common issue happened in Chinese culture. In China, thousands of

unwanted baby girls are abandoned, aborted and even killed each year. For poor and rural
families, traditions favoring boys still run strong. Government limits on family sizes imposed
since 1979 also mean that by keeping a girl, couples can lose their chance for a boy--long
prized in China as the heir who will carry on the family name, till the family plot and care for
his parents in old age. In Shang Hai, China, Mrs. Liu gave her second daughter away at birth
and aborted a third when an ultrasound scan showed that fetus, too, was female. Acoording to
their village culture, a woman without a son will be cursed by her mother-in-law and laughed
at by the village. Everybody thinks it's the duty of a woman to bear a boy. The births of many
girls are simply not reported, Chinese experts say. Instead, parents give them to childless
relatives or neighbors, or abandon them on the doorsteps of hospitals or government offices.
According to the statistic report, girls fill China's 900 state-run orphanages.
