Flange insula on is used to electrically isolate sec ons of pipelines from each other or from tanks and other plant. This prevents leakage of
cathodic protec on currents from the protected pipeline(s) to other structure thus allowing economic applica on and closer control of the
cathodic protec on system. Insula on can take the form of factory assembled Monobloc Insula ng Joints or site installed insula ng ange
kits.
Insula ng Kits: ETC's insula ng ange kits consist of following items:
1. Gasket
2. Insula ng sleeves
3. Insula ng washers
4. Bright steel washers
Monoblock joints
Monoblock joints are factory manufactured and assembled and cannot be dismantled on site. Joints are available in sizes ranging from " to

70", opera ng pressures up to ANSI 2500 and temperatures from -50 C to 280 C. Monobloc joints are made to a higher specica on than
assembled kits and are more reliable but considerably more expensive.
Isola ng Spools
ETC recommends to t insula ng spools pieces where high conduc vity uids are being carried to increase the electrical resistance through
the electrolyte. ETC engineers are available any me to advise where spool pieces are required.
Flange Protec on:
ETC-CPS recommends that once insula ng ange kits are installed, they should be protected against lightning and fault currents. Where the
possibility of lightning strikes and fault currents being conducted down pipeline exists, it is necessary to bridge over the isola ng coupling to
prevent damage to the ange insula on and damage from explosion where ammable products are being carried. Suitable recommended
equipment to be considered are:
Surge Arrestors and spark gaps are available for direct connec on insula ng joints. Specic requirements can be met if design fault
current/dura on and type of fault are specied. Surge arrestors are available for hazardous or non-hazardous areas
