H ISTORY OF M ANKATO & THEIR THEATRE D EPARTMENT

Mankato Normal School was founded in 1868 as an institution that fosters big
ideas and real world thinking. Through many name changes and expansions it now
offers numerous degrees including a BFA in Musical Theatre. The Mankato Theatre
program dates back to the 1950s. The theatre program was later complimented by a
dance program allowing students more performance opportunities. Today, the
Theatre and Dance department offers three different BFAs. The three concentrations
they currently offer are in Acting, Design/Technology, and Musical Theatre.

W HAT IS THE BFA OF M USICAL THEATRE ?

The BFA Musical Theatre program focuses on a hands-on approach doubled with
course work. They believe in learning by doing and encourage their students to be a
part of as many productions put on within the BFA programs. They allow students to
explore a wide range of dramatic literature & movement possibilities in three
performance venues.

A DMISSION R EQUIREMENTS FOR THE BFA

Prior academic record

Dedication to pursuing a musical theatre career
Incoming freshmen
Applicants are also expected to have a min GPA in the top 40% of their high school class.
Students can be admitted if they do not meet the academic requirements but they MUST
meet the BFA continuation requirements by the end of their first year or they may be
dismissed from the program.

A UDITIONS
For Musical Theatre track:
90-second comedic monologue & a 90-second dramatic monologue
Up to 64 bars from a ballad & 64 bars from an up-tempo
A movement audition (come prepared to move)
Send in resume with all experience in chronological order starting Jr.
Year of High School.
A 150 word-essay telling why you want the BFA degree.
Mankato Auditions
Two letters of recommendation. One from a teacher & one from a director you have worked with.
**The next date for BFA auditions will be Saturday, March 1, 2014. Auditions will begin at about 9 a.m

H OW TO APPLY FOR M ANKATO

Submit a MSU application or apply online

Submit a $20 non-refundable application processing fee
Request that an official high school transcript and your ACT score be sent to the Office of Admissions.
If you have earned credits at a college or university, request official transcripts from those institutions to be
sent to the Office of Admissions after you have completed your last course.

A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL IS BEING OFFERED BY THE UNIVERSITY THAT ALLOWS FREE APPLICATIONS FROM
NOVEMBER 28th- DECEMBER 21ST
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Freshman Applicants:
Must provide proof of completion of secondary education (generally 12 years) and be eligible into the universities
in their home countries.
Deadlines:
Students currently not living in the United States and applying from another country:
April 1 for the August (Fall) term, September 1 for the January (Spring) term.
