QUESTION 1 (25 MARKS)
Rani was the new recruiting supervisor for International Manufacturing Company in
Kajang, Selangor. One of Ranis first assignment was to recruit two software design
engineers. Design engineers are difficult to recruit because of the difficulty of their
training and their high demand. After considering various recruitment alternatives, Rani
placed the following advertisement in a local newspaper:
Employment Opportunity for Software Design Engineers
2 positions available for engineers desiring career in growth industry.
Prefer recent college graduate with good appearance.
Good credit rating.

More than 300 applications arrived in the first week, and Rani was elated. When she
reviewed the applicants, however, it appeared that only a few people possessed the
desired qualifications for the job.

a. What is recruitment?

b. From the exercise above, Rani clearly had overlooked some of the important
information that should be included in recruitment process which resulted in an
excessive number of unqualified people applying for the post. Discuss in detail what
are they?

newspaper advertisement above. Briefly discuss them.

b. Selection is a process of choosing from a group of applicants the individual best suited
for a particular position and the organization. Although a standardized selection
process should be followed consistently, there are several factors which require some
exceptions.
Briefly discuss FIVE (5) environmental factors affecting the selection process of an
organization.

QUESTION 3 (25 MARKS)


You are the human resource director for a large manufacturing firm that is undergoing
major changes. Your firm is in the process of building two technologically advanced
plants. When these are completed, the company will close four out of its five old plants.
It is you job to determine who will stay with the old plant and who will be retrained for
the newer plants. You are required to plan and develop an extensive training program for
the employees to ensure that they are capable to operate the new plant.

a. The human resource management roles have changed dramatically over time. Identify
and describe in detail FOUR (4) changes which have taken place at human resource
department.

b. There are many factors affecting the dynamics of human resource management
functions. Factors outside an organizations boundaries that affect a firms human
resources make up the external environment.
List out FIVE (5) external environment factors which affects human resources
functions.

QUESTION 5 (25 MARKS)


a. In 2009, Intel Corporation has been identified and rated as an excellent company
under the area of corporate social responsibility. Explain clearly the term corporate
social responsibility and give an example to it.

b. A properly designed performance appraisal system can help the company to achieve
organizational objectives and enhance employee performance. Briefly discuss in
detail FIVE (5) use of performance appraisal result towards compensation program
and FIVE (5) use of performance appraisal result towards recruitment/selection
process.
