1. What are the major levels of management found in an enterprise?

2. What is co-ordination? Why it is called the essence of managership?

3. What are the various types of management plans?

4. What are planning premises? What are their major types?

5. Define and distinguish between ‘Decision’ and ‘Decision-making’.

6. What is departmentation? State its significance.

7. What is staffing? What is the need for it?

8. What is management audit? How does it differ from internal audit?

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS (4 x 16 = 64 MARKS)
9. a) “Management is the art of creating a fine climate for work in an enterprise.” Comment. Suggest a
suitable definition of management and establish its superiority over certain popular definitions of
management.

b) Compare and contrast the works of F.W.Taylor and Henry Fayol.

10.a) Comment on the major steps involved in the planning process. Are same steps involved in all types of
planning process?

b) State and explain briefly the major principles of organization, with special reference to span of
management principle. Which principles of organization do you consider more important and why?
11.a) What is delegation of authority? What steps are involved in the process of delegation?

b) Give a comparative account of the merits and limitations of centralization and decentralization.

12.a) Critically examine Herzberg’s two factor theory of motivation. Are hygiene factors stated in Herzberg’s
theory really maintenance factors, in all enterprises, the world over?

b) What are formal and informal organizations? Give a comparative account of these two types of
organizations. Is it logical to term informal organization?

CASE STUDY – COMPULSORY (16 X 1 = 16 MARKS)

13. Nawal had just graduated from I.I.M., Bangalore and joined his father’s small business, which
employed 28 semi-skilled workers. After one week, his father, a retired Government officer, called him and said,
”Nawal, I have had a chance to observe your working with the men and women for the past few days. Although I
hate to, I must say something. You are just too nice to people. I know they taught you human relations stuff at the
I.I.M., but it just does not work here. I remember, when the Hawthorne studies were first reported, everyone in the
academic field got all excited about them. But, believe me, there more to managing people than just being nice to
them”.

Questions:

• Do you think, Nawal’s father understood and interpreted the Hawthorne studies correctly?
• If you were Nawal, what would your reaction be to your father’s comments?
