What is Ashtakavarga predictions

Ashtakavarga is a very sophisticated and unique transit system. There is nothing

else like it anywhere in the world. In Vedic Astrology, there is such a plethora of
techniques to choose from. According to Parasara, to make the process of prediction
a lot simpler, Ashtakavarga can be used. To practice Ashtakavarga effectively, it is
important to be very familiar with the qualities and actions of each planet as a karaka
and the qualities and actions of each house. This is the key.
The principle seven planets viz the Sun,Moon,Mars,Mercury,Jupiter,Venus ,Saturn
and the Ascendant are used as reference points and each of them scores between
0-8 depending on how auspiciously or inauspiciously they are placed from each
other. This system is called Ashtakavarga. Ashta (eight) and Varga (division) and
was first taught by Lord Shiva to Parvati in the Bramhayamala tantra.
You may have seen several Ashtakavarga charts. Usually there is one for every
planet. The chief amongst them is called the Sarva-ashtakavarga and is always the
biggest chart when compared to the other Ashtakavarga charts. Sarva means allencompassing and this chart is a sum total of all other ashtakavarga chart.
Rahu and Ketu do not have separate Ashtakavarga charts as they are shadow
planets. So you will have 7 plus 1 and that makes it 8. Most people have no idea that
it is one of the very useful information available in their horoscope.
Ashtakavarga is more important than Gochara. It is a more precise measurement
because it measures a planets strength from every planet, not just the Moon.
Gochara is just 1/8 of Ashtakavarga. If a planet is transiting a house with high points
in Ashtakavarga, but a bad house from the Moon (Gochara), then the results of
Ashtakavargatrump the results obtained from Gochara. For example, Saturn
transiting the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon is considered inauspicious, but Saturn
may be very auspicious in other respects, as in the case of Saturn transiting a house
with high Ashtakavaraga points. In this case, Saturn would be able to perform very
well and give auspicious results. Ashtakavarga takes a more accurate and holistic
look at the transiting planets than just those transits from the natal Moon.
Thus, each of the seven planets earns certain points, which is again unique for each
person and enables one to know how favourable a particular planet or an area of like
of for them.
0, 1, 2, or 3 points = Bad; 4 points =Average; 5, 6, 7, or 8 points = Good
Scores of 0 are considered most inauspicious, whilst from 1-3 are regarded as
inferior.
A score of 4 makes a planet neutral and such does not cause any harm but neither
does it bestow any gains.
Scores from 5-8 are considered lucky and fortunate with the strength increasing as
they plummet towards 8.

Should a planet score 8, is signifies gains of kingdom and royal insignia.

Points earned by every sign from different planets are than added to get sarvaashtakavarga.
In sarva-ashtakavarga overall strength of houses getting from every planets are
judged. Here 25-27 points are considered neutral, below 25 is inauspicious and
above 30 is highly auspicious.
Planets placed in house where points are above 30 will work beneficially even its
malefic in its placements.

How To Use Ashtakavarga Concept In Predictions

Any sign or house having ashtakavarga points more than 28 will give beneficial
results, other than this if the sign is having less than 28 points will not give good
results. Sign or house having points b/w 25 &30 will be neutral in nature.
Planet placed in such a sign or house which have less ashtakavarga points will be
strength less, even if it is in own sign, exalted, in quadrant or trine and in upachya
house. This means that planet is not getting favour from other planets.
Planet placed in such a sign or house which have good ashtakavarga points will be
good, even if it is debilitated or in 6th, 8th or 12th house.
If 9th, 10th, 11th and 1st houses all have more than 30 points than the native will live
a prosperous life.
One will be a beggar if 9th, 10th, 11th and 1st houses have 21 or 22 or less points,
also malefic is sitting in trine (trikona).
If moon is in close conjunction with sun with less points in that house, also Saturn
have its aspect on moon, than the native will be in the influence of evil spirits.
If the total sums of the quadrant (Kendra) or trine (Trikona) is more than the sum of
the left six houses than the native will be prosperous, knowledgeable, satisfied with
his life and will do good deeds.
How to judge the effects of transit (gochar) from ashtakavarga in astrology
Ashtakavarga is the technique which tells if a planet is getting favor from other
planets, on the behalf of this, points on every sign are calculated from every planet.
A sign can get from 0 to 7 points from a particular planet. Remember Jupiter mostly
haves 4 or more points and Saturn rarely have points higher than 4.
Planets transiting house with higher ashtakavarga points, getting from this planet to
transited house, proves to be beneficial, but if that house have low ashtakavarga
points than the transit will not give the expected result.
Let us take the example of Saturn transiting 6th house from moon, which is a very
good transit according to texts, this transit can give wealth, promotions, good health
and loss of enemies but these results would not be obtained if 6th house have low
ashtakavarga points.
Any benefits shown by some transit according to the vedic texts, will not be obtained
ashtakavarga points are lower than 25.
In this way transit for every planet can be judged.
