Eight Seabees from Naval Mobile

Construction Battalion (NCMB) 3 volunteered at the Battle of the Boxes, held
at Seaside Park, the Ventura County
Fairgrounds, Saturday, Nov. 15.
Hosted by West Coast Strength and
Conditioning, the annual CrossFit competition featured 96 athletes from different CrossFit gyms across the nation,

making the Seabee volunteers critical

to the events success.
We cant run the event without our
volunteers, said West Coast Strength
and Conditioning Co-Owner Jaala
Thibault. They ranged from gym members to Seabees. We needed them and
they did a great job.
Logistics Specialist 1st Class Robert
Franke from NMCB 3 grew up in Ventura and helped count repetitions for

the athletes as they progressed through

a series of CrossFit challenges.
Giving back to the community is
small thanks for the support that I got
going through all the school programs
here, he said. I feel that everyone
should volunteer.
CrossFit is a sport and a community
represented largely in California. The
friendly competition helped inspire the
volunteers.

I felt amazing! said Franke. The

people I judged gave everything they
had and pushed beyond their limits.
Just being there with them and urging
them on was one of the highlights to
that event.
NMCB 3 completes hundreds of
hours of community service each
month. Volunteer activities range from
mentorship of at-risk youths to helping
at local events.

say goodbye and share information to keep

in contact.
Plan on carrying a copy of your childs
birth certificate, immunization record and
most recent report card. Those items may
get packed unless you make an effort to set
them aside.
Contact the school liaison officer (SLO)
at your upcoming installation to obtain information about schools, programs and
services.
If your child is receiving specialized educational services due to a special need, you
should also retain a copy of the most recent

Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Until a new IEP is written, the new school
should provide similar services. Also make
sure that your child is enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)
to be sure that similar services medical,
educational or therapeutic will be available in your new community.
Once your family finds housing at the new
installation, you can register your child for
school. The new school will request official
transcripts from your childs former school.
The assessments and class work examples
given to you by your childs teacher, along
with a copy of the most recent report card,
will assist the school in placing your child
in the appropriate classes.
High school
In addition to notifying the school and
making sure all important documents are
set aside to register for school, parents of
high school students must also consider a
few more things.
Most important to remember is that high
school students must have a minimum number of credits to graduate. In California,
students need 44 credits to graduate. However, many states have different minimums,

and they may calculate their credits differently.

In most cases, students must complete a
course to receive credit. Therefore, if a student moves before the end of the semester,
the student takes no credit to the next school
for the classes that are only partially completed. Some schools will try to enroll the
student in the same or similar class, but not
every school offers the same courses. For
example, if your student is taking German
3 in California and moves to a school that
does not offer German, there is not a way
to complete the course. This should be considered when planning your move.
Talk to your childs current school counselor and get in touch with the SLO at the
new installation to learn more about the
schools in the area. If a student will not be
able to complete a course prior to moving,
the best scenario is for the schools to work
together prior to the move to ensure the
course can be completed in the new
school.
The NBVC school liaison officer can be
contacted at 805-989-5211 or via email at
NBVC_SLO@navy.mil for any K-12 educationrelated questions.

As the middle of the school year and a

school break approaches, some military
families are planning their next move.
Military children can expect to attend nine
schools during the course of their elementary, middle and high school years. Unfortunately, the military does not only move
service members during summer months
when school is out of session; therefore,
military students often have to leave their
school midyear.
For a military family planning a move,
here are some things to consider especially if the move is midyear.
Elementary and middle school
It is important to notify your childs elementary and middle school teachers about
one month prior to your move date. Teachers may be able assess your child and give
you valuable information in the form of
classwork and assessment that can be shared
with the new school.
Notify the school office staff one week
prior to leaving so they can be prepared to
pull together any documents you may
need.
Notifying the teacher and the school also
allows your child, their friends, and class to

Wherever duty takes us, God goes as well

An ancient Greek philosopher named
Heraclitus famously observed, Change
is the only constant in life. Those of us
who have had the privilege to serve our
country in uniform, along with our family members, truly understand this.
For example, how many civilian friends
do you know who have to change their
location and jobs every 18 to 36 months?
There are thousands of active duty family members and loved ones who have
had to travel from one part of the world
to another to start a new life in their new
duty assignment.
There are also active duty people in
the process of retirement, plus many
more who are completing boot camp or
A School so they can join the Fleet in
their professional journey through the
Navy.
Because of the nature of our work in
the Navy, we all seem to live a larger and
more compressed life within the same
period of time as anyone else we know.
I have friends I grew up with in the Bay
Area who have never lived more than
500 miles from their place of birth. In a

Water conservation tips

Designate one glass for your drinking water each day, or refill a water
bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash.
Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape
them clean.
Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Instead, compost vegetable food
waste and save gallons every time.
Wash your fruits and vegetables in
a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
Dont use running water to thaw
food. For water efficiency and food
safety, defrost food in the refrigerator.
Keep a pitcher of drinking water
in the refrigerator instead of running
the tap. This way, every drop goes
down you and not the drain.
Reuse leftover water from cooked
or steamed foods to start a nutritious
soup. Its one more way to get eight
glasses of water a day.
For more information on these
and other water- and energy-saving
ideas, contact A. Peter Shack, Naval
Base Ventura County (NBVC) resource
efficiency manager, at 805-982-2842.

typical 20-year military career, it would

not be unusual for someone to have
moved more than eight times from one
duty station to another going overseas, perhaps to both the East and West
Coasts of our great country. And thats
not to mention the time away from home
and loved ones due to deployments
abroad.
While change is a constant theme in
any busy persons life, I find much comfort in the fact that Gods presence and

love is always with us throughout all the

many situations in life. The Psalmists
remind us of this truth from the Holy
Scriptures. (This is taken from Psalm
139:1-6):
God, investigate my life; get all the
facts firsthand. Im an open book to you;
even from a distance, you know what
Im thinking. You know when I leave
and when I get back; Im never out of
your sight. You know everything Im
going to say before I start the first sentence.
I look behind me and youre there,
then up ahead and youre there, too
your reassuring presence, coming and
going. This is too much, too wonderful
I cant take it all in!
It is reassuring that no matter where
we are in our life transitions, God is just
a breath away when we call upon Him
into our lives. Wherever you are in life,
you can always connect and reconnect
with God by praying to Him.
Thank you all for the good things you
do for our nation in keeping us free. God
bless you all!

Safety tips for the holiday season

Dont get burned: Keep
an eye on candles and
tree decorations, dont
put the tree close to
a heat source, dont
overload electrical
outlets
Holiday season is upon us, and its time
to pull out the decorations. Here are
some safety tips to ensure that you and
your family are fire-safe during the holiday season.
Inspect holiday lights each year for
frayed wires, bare spots and broken or
cracked sockets before putting them
up.
Do not overload electrical outlets.
Dont link more than three light
strands together. Connect strings of
lights to an extension cord.
Never leave holiday lights on unattended.
Use only non-flammable or flame-

retardant holiday tree decorations.

Keep all decorations at least three feet
away from heating devices.
Never place wrapping paper in the
fireplace.
Never leave candles unattended.
Do not place your tree close to a heat
source, hallway or door.
If purchasing a live tree, check to
make sure all needles are green and hard
to pull back from the branches.
Keep the tree stand filled with water
at all times.
Dispose of your tree by taking it to
a recycling center or having it hauled
away by a community pick-up service.
Finally, as in every season, have working smoke alarms installed on every
level of your home, test them monthly
and keep them equipped with new batteries. Know when and how to call for
help. And remember to practice your
home escape plan.
For additional information on fire prevention safety for your home or the office, contact the Naval Base Ventura
County Fire Prevention Office at 805989-0112.

Parents join their little ones for a Thanksgiving feast

Parents joined their infants and toddlers
for a Thanksgiving feast at the Child Development Center (CDC) at Naval Base
Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme
Thursday, Nov. 20.
This is the first time weve done this,
but its something weve been planning for
awhile, said Tamara Lo-Ray, the centers
director and the organizer of the event.
Its something that allows us all to show
that we give thanks.
About 85 parents joined the youngsters
for a meal of turkey, green beans, mashed
potatoes and rolls. One parent whos a
vegetarian brought some roasted veggies
to share.
Sheryll Howell enjoyed spending some
quality time with her 15-month-old,

The Self-Service Tax Assistance Program is sponsored each year by the
Region Legal Service Office, Detachment Ventura.
All volunteers will receive free training to become a federal and California
state tax preparer. Training is usually
the first two weeks in January.
For more information or to sign up
as a volunteer, call Sal Gonzales at

As the holiday season gets under way,

the Security Management Office is issuing
a reminder to all personnel regarding foreign nationals (FNs) aboard Naval Base
Ventura County (NBVC).
Sponsors of FNs, including friends and
family of military personnel living in base
housing (designated as unofficial FN
visitors), must fill out a Foreign National Request Form and fax or email it, along
with a copy of the FNs passport, to the
Security Management Office at least two
business days before they want to come
on base.
After approval, sponsors may pick up
the orange FN badge from the Pass & ID
office. The badge must be worn at all times
while on the installation.
FNs staying in the Catalina Heights
military housing complex need not go
through this process unless they want to
come on base for any reason, including
shopping at the commissary or NEX or
to use recreational facilities.
Cases involving base access for official

military and civilian work-related reasons

are usually handled via the tenant commands foreign national security managers.
NBVC defines FNs as individuals 18
and older who are not U.S. citizens or,
regardless of citizenship, are representing
a foreign government, corporation or entity or an FN doing business with a Department of Defense component or contractor. This includes companies
incorporated in the United States but under foreign ownership, control or influence. Legal permanent residents with lawful permanent resident cards are not
considered FNs.
Once on base, unofficial FNs must be
escorted at all times around the installation.
The visitor request form and more information concerning the access program
can be found online at cnic.navy.mil/ventura under Visitors and base access information on the right-hand side of the
page.

Sapper Ty Fergusion, assigned to Australian Combat Engineer Regiment,
during the exercise Harii Hamutuk closing ceremony at Port Hera Naval
Base, East Timor.

lian Ambassador Toby Lendon

and Timorese Vice Chief of Defense Force Brigadier Gen. Filomeno Tirocinado da Paixao de

Jesus attended the closing ceremony Nov. 7 at the F-FDTL

Port Hera Naval Base and the
Hera Community Center.

The general commented on

the strong relationships developed between the three countries
and how the exercise will help
lead to future interaction and
engagements.
The general and Lendon cut
the ribbon on two new 40-person
accommodation blocks for the
F-FDTL on Port Hera Naval
Base, one of the major projects
of the exercise.
The accommodation blocks,
which will provide needed barracks support to the base, were
completed by a crew comprised
of all four units, led by an Australian engineer.
After the ribbon-cutting, the
general honored the Australian,
Seabee and Marine troop commanders with tais, a Timorese
tradition representing friendship
and a lasting relationship.
A pause in the ceremony allowed the attendees to move to
the second major project, a renovated community center.

Here, Dueholm and the general cut the ribbon on a building

that will support the local village
chief and community events.
The community center underwent a major renovation led by
a Seabee with a crew combined
from all four units.
Working with other countries
was a good experience, said
Builder 3rd Class Jennifer Casey
of NMCB 4. Also, it was interesting to see how each of us does
construction work. I really enjoyed the exercise and it was a
highlight for me.
Casey worked on the community center, where a Timorese
sergeant taught the crew how to
apply stucco accurately and
quickly, and the Seabees were
able to pass on some quality
control points.
Harii Hamutuk is expected to
continue as an annual event,
supporting military and community construction for years to
come in Timor-Leste.

Then he showed off a few tricks.
Jim Bates came at the invitation of Marc
Wypyszynski, a counselor at the youth
center and a friend of the skateboarder
since the two attended Newbury Park
High School nearly 20 years ago.
On his first visit Thursday, Nov. 13,
Bates read his new childrens book, The
Boy Who Skated With Dragons, to the
school-age children in the after-school
program, then did a few tricks outside.
He came back a week later when the
centers portable skate park was set up and
did some more tricks for the centers teenagers, who quickly joined him on the
ramps and rails.
It takes a lot of practice, Bates told
the youngsters. It takes time and practice.
And if you find people who know more
about it than you do, they can help you
get better.
Bates, 37, first jumped on a skateboard

During his first visit to the youth center,

the youngsters peppered him with questions about his favorite skating tricks
(360-degree flips) and his role models
(my parents).
On the second visit, he took advantage
of the centers new $1,500 portable skate
park, which includes two quarter pipes, a
square fun box, a launch ramp and two
rail slides.
Its been very popular, said Brett Lane,
youth director for Naval Base Ventura
Countys Child and Youth Programs.
Weve bought some safety gear and two
skateboards, and were definitely planning
to buy more.
Equipment like that heavy and
sturdy and built to take a beating is a
big draw, Lane said.
Teen enrollment jumped by five kids
the first week alone, he noted.
He said the teens are building up their
confidence just like Bates.
Its all baby steps, the skateboarder
said. Its a process. You keep falling down
and you keep getting back up and you
keep trying.

Ventura County Rescue Missions annual

decorated and providing table service is
critical to imparting a restaurant feel to the
event, organizers say.

Theres nothing more heartfelt than

giving back and helping the community,
Trent said, noting that for many of the
diners, this was a rare opportunity for a
home-cooked meal.
Volunteering at a rescue mission was
nothing new for some of the Sailors. Religious Program Specialist Apprentice Jason Huyssoon said he grew up helping the
homeless in his hometown near Californias
Bay Area.
I think its a good thing to do, he
said.
Sailors began arriving at the Ventura
County Rescue Mission at 9 a.m., three
hours before the noon feast, and were put
to work preparing the table decorations.
Chief Religious Program Specialist
Frank Dizon and Religious Program Specialist 2nd Class Evan Blair polished
gourds for the centerpieces, while Capt.
Jeff Marshall, commanding officer of the
Naval Satellite Operations Center, decorated placemats with his wife and three
daughters.
Event organizers said the table decorations along with having volunteers serve
the plates to the tables help set a restaurant mood and create a sense of dignity for the diners.
Later, Marshall and his family would
distribute goodie bags to all the families.

She and Saltee agreed that without the
Sailors efforts, the event would be difficult
to pull off.
They know how to work, Saltee said.
We direct them, and they go to work.

We love the Navy, he added. Theyve

been great to us.
The other volunteers also recognized the
Sailors hard work and paid an unexpected, unplanned tribute.
In setting up a group photo shot of the
100-plus volunteers, Saltee asked the dozen Sailors to gather in one corner so theyd
all be together. As the Sailors walked in
front of the gathering to reach the other
side of the room, the crowd of volunteers
broke into spontaneous applause.

NMCB 3 installs concrete pad at Seabee Museum

By UTCN James Rieger
NMCB 3

Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3 finished installing a new concrete pad Thursday, Nov.
20, for the Seabee Museum at Naval Base
Ventura County (NMCB) Port Hueneme,
saving the non-profit organization more
than $15,000 in outside contracting.
The four-day project began with the 14-

Seabee crew tearing down the museums

old interior mock runway to begin construction on the new 20-cubic-yard concrete pad.
According to Tim Morales, the museums exhibit specialist, the mock runway
posed a major safety concern.
We bought a new scissor lift that will
be used to help with maintenance, said
Morales. The lift requires flooring that

can withstand several thousand pounds

of weight. The new pad is rated for more
than 4,000.
In addition to helping the museum overcome safety issues, the project provided
valuable training that will increase deployment readiness.
Pouring concrete is something Seabees
do at nearly every project across every
deployed region, said Builder 1st Class

James Griffith, the projects quality control lead. For the junior troops helping
out, this type of exposure makes them a
more capable construction worker.
Construction projects completed during
homeport allow NMCB 3 to learn, practice and perfect skills required for conducting the commands humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission when
operating forward.

our goals, and really listen to our friends,
family and coworkers.
Living in the present is challenging, but
its key to good mental health. I encourage
you to consciously practice staying present
daily by thinking about what you are actually doing. My favorite staying present

exercise is using my five senses to help me

be where I am.
For example, when I prepare a meal, I
focus on each step. I notice the redness of
the tomato and how it feels firm but has

delicious aroma of the onion as it caramelizes to a light, golden brown. With a
wooden spoon I take a little taste test,
savoring the combination of ingredients.
My mind starts to wander off, worrying
about whats next on my to-do list, so I
gently shift my focus back to the meal in
front of me. I am in the moment. I notice
my breathing a deep breath in through

with deployments, frequent moves and
unpredictable timetables, it can be tough
for most of us to mentally stay in the here
and now. Its so tempting during that meeting to zone out and think about all the
errands you need to run after work or replay the argument you had earlier. You
may be spending quite a bit of time somewhere other than where you are.
When your mind frequently replays
negative events or worries about whats to
come, it leaves you feeling depleted or on
edge. We all want to be less worried, feel

This Vespa scooter is in
excellent condition and
rides beautifully. It has
2,697 miles and has been
kept in our garage for the
past two years. Were not
the original owners, but we
bought it from an
individual who also took
very good care of it. The
maintenance is current
with a recent oil change
and tune up. Color is Siena
Ivory with a brown leather
saddle. Theres a matching
top case with lots of room
in it. This scooter has a
chrome crash bar, a small
windshield and an extra
set of rear-view mirrors.
We have a matching
helmet (size small) that
will be sold separately if
interested. $4,200 call:
