Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography
From the time we are born, we look up to our parents because they are the ones who
teach us right from wrong. Although most children may not admit it, parents have the biggest
influence on them. When asked what they want to be when they grow up,very few young
children respond with the phrase, I want to be just like my mom or dad. It is very important for
parents to talk to their teens about their future careers starting at a young age. Although some
parents may not spend much time with their teens talking about their futures, they need to make
an effort to in order for their teens to be successful in the future.
In this essay I will explore the influence parents have on their teens future careers. A
majority of teens would rather talk to their friends or school counselors rather than their own
parents about their future plans. But from my research, many studies all around the world have
shown that parents do have the most influence on their teens rather they know it or not. Most
teens either follow in their parents footsteps or go the complete other way. Every decision that
teens make are somehow influenced by their parents whether they realize it or not. Since parents
are such a huge influence on their children in everything, their opinions on their teens future are
very important to the teens.
This selected bibliography includes sources about how much parents influence teens and
their future careers. According to Sara Aase, parents influence their children through cause and
effect. This means that everything that a parent does has some effect on their children whether its

good or bad. For example, when a parent of a teen smokes, thats either going to influence their
child to smoke or not smoke based on how their parents have turned out. So this relates to
children choosing a career based on the fact of how their parents react to their jobs. According to
Henrietta Alika, parents are the ones who have raised their children so they have an influence on
how their teens will spend their future. Since parents are obviously the ones who raise their
children, they have taught them right from wrong so parents will help their kids pick a future
career. Samia Nawaz conducted a study on both males and females to see how strong the bonds
with their parents and peers are. The study showed that both males and females have a stronger
bond with their parents rather than their peers. Since they have a stronger bond with their
parents, these particular teens in this study find it easier to talk to their parents about their future
since they are closer with them. In the article, Parents' Influence on Careers states how parents
do not influence their children's careers. Teens have so many outside influences such as social
media and peer pressure on what they should do as a career in the future. Lastly, Noa Saka
believes that future careers are based off of the environment that teens grew up in. The
environment that teens are born in causes a huge influence on what they want their future to be
like. Their parents are the ones who have put them into this environment which is why they are
so influenced. In the end, everyone has a different opinion on how parents influence their
children's future, but most people believe that parents are the biggest influence.

This article talks about how parents can negatively or

positivley effect their teens based on how their teens see the way they live. Some teen
grow up exactly like their parents while others are completely different. Research shows
that teens biggest influences are first their family, then their friends, and lastly the culture
that they grew up in.

The biggest influences on teens and picking their future

careers are their parents and peers. Parents are the ones who raise their children, they
teach them right from wrong, they teach them about sexuality, and the teach them
responsibility. Therefore, parents have an influence on thir future careers because they
are the ones that have raised them.

There was a study done to see if males and females have the same attachment

bonds to their peers and their parents. The study showed that there is no difference
between male and female bonds with their parents and peers. However, the study did
show that both male and female have a stronger attachment to their parents than their
peers which leads to them most likely following the ideas of careers through their
parents.

At a young

age, kids usually have a dream job envisioned in there heads that usually works out or
doesn't work out when they get older. There are a lot of factors that affect a teens
decision in what career they choose. One example of influence is the environment they
grew up in. For example, parents have either a huge or small impact on what they choose
to be in life. Also, teens have a lot of resources if they can not decide on a career such as
school counselors or parents.
