Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography
Fear is a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, whether the threat is real or
imagined. In Veronica Roths, Divergent, since the Dauntless have their own fears and attempt to
overcome whatever it is, no matter what it will take. Now, the question is: Why do we, as
individuals, have to conquer such a pragmatic fear? In todays society, it becomes important to
overcome any fear we have so that we can succeed in any challenge society will throw at us.
This essay will explore aspects associated with the likes of fear and different peoples
point of view of this term. Although people have their different points and arguments about fear,
each of their theories state the overall concept this essay will get across about how it applies into
society today. Also within this essay, I will discuss more in depth about how overcoming fear
actually applies to the benefit of an individual and display its positive impact it will have on the
person as well as those around them. The essay will explore briefly the meaning behind why
people exhibit such fears but it will also show the steps and decisions that person made in
overcoming the object they feared. Not only will definitions and point of views be addressed but
important examples will be inserted into this essay from various sources.
This selected bibliography includes sources that illustrate their psychological views over
fear, experience on the topic, and even historic examples coexisting with fear and society. The
Bigelow essay will address a diverse opinion on the topic of fear with several different reviews
on stories she has read and that she believes fear she be conquered so we can live life to the
fullest. The Gardner essay has a more basic approach with meaningful examples that can relate
to the concept of fear and its benefits to succeed in society. Within the Nealy essay, the source
illustrates an interview about someone who fears to try new things but when the person does,
they see themselves getting better at what they do. The Slife essay takes a more psychological
turn on the subject of fear, as the author explains what triggers fear and why people experience
them. The Rachman essay will break off into subcategories and explain in detail how every
situation fought their fears. Together, all of these sources provided adequate information
corresponding with fear and its success it will bring after it is conquered.
