Introduction(Hook)

Onceallthestudentshavearrived,thelessonforthedaywillbeginwithgreetingthestudentsandreviewingthe
agendaforthedayandinformingthemthattheywillbeassignedtheirprojectstodaysotheycanrelatethelessontoit.
Thelessonwillkickoffwithavocabularyreviewactivityforthedistrictwidetesttomorrow,October30th.Fortheactivity,
therewillbefillintheblanksentencesdisplayedonthePrometheanboard.Iwillexplainthattogetherasaclasswewill
gothroughallthesentencesandstudentswillbeabletocomeuptotheprometheanboardandusethepentowrite
thecorrectwordintheblankandcompletethesentence.Oncethevocabularyreviewisover,thelessonwilltransition
intoaminilessononpointofview.

PointofViewMiniLesson:
Ontheprometheanboardtherewillbethequestion:"Whatispointofview?".ByusingtheprometheanpenIwillwrite
theresponsesfromthestudentstodefineitintheirterms.Wewillalsodefinethedifferencesbetweenfirstandthird
person.Thisismoreofareviewsoitshouldgoquickly.Afterreviewingpointofview,thelessonwilltransitioninto
brainstormingideasfortheirGatsbyjournalproject.
ClassBrainstorming:
OntheprometheanboardwillbeNickCarraway'sname,therestoftheslidewillbeblank.Asaclasswewillusethis
slidetousetheeventofNickmovingfromtheWesttotheEastinthenovelandbrainstormhowtoturnitintoajournal
entryforNick'scharacter.Thiswillbeusedtoensurethatthestudentsunderstandtheexpectationsofthejournalsfor
eachofthecharacters.IwillhaveanothercharacterslidereadytogoafterNick'sslideifthestudentswouldlikeorneed
morebrainstorming.Iftheydon't,thenwewillmoveontothepacket.
GatsbyJournalProjectPacket
TotransitionintothispartofthelessonIwillhandoutthepacketstothestudents.Iwillgooverthecontentofthe
packetswiththestudents,whichcontainsanexplainationoftheproject,therequirements,howitsbrokendowntobe
graded,andthegradingrubric.Apossiblejournalentryexamplemayalsobeincluded.

Closure/Wrapup

Aftergoingoverthepacketandansweringanyquestions,andiftimepermits,studentswillbeaskedtochoosetheir
partnersandgettogethertostartbrainstromingideas.Asanexitsliptheywillbeaskedasagroup,oriftheyare
workingalone,toturnin3ideastheyarethinkingaboutwriting.Theprompt:"ExitSlip:Withyourpartner,orifworking
individually,writedown3ideasyouareconsideringwritingabout.All3canbeideasforonecharacter,ortheycanbefor
differentcharacters,orforthetitlepage.Ijustwanttoseethatyouarestartingtothinkabouttheproject!"
