Grant Road

Skywalk Mumbai
aesthetic appearance showcasing vibrancy of Mumbai

he Mumbai Skywalk Project is a

series of skyways for pedestrian use in
the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The skywalks connect Mumbai Suburban
Railway stations or other high-concentration
commercial areas with various heavily
targeted destinations. The purpose of the
skywalks is efficient dispersal of commuters
from congested areas to strategic locations,
such as bus stations, taxi stands, shopping
areas, etc. and vice versa.
The city will be getting a brand new skywalk at
Grant Road. The structure, touted by the
MSRDC as unique in the country, is all set to
represent the latest innovations in
architecture, with a 585 metre long walkway
supported by stress rods suspended from a
central tower, replete with four escalators and
fancy LED lights. However, this state-of-theart skywalk, which officials insist will become
iconic, comes at a cost, and a staggering one at
that. At 50.48 crore, this walkway is the most
expensive in the city. While the bridge design
may be fancy, there is a strong functional
requirement behind its circular shape.

Grant Road Station is a very important part of

the Western Railway line. Substantial number
of pedestrians emerging from railway station
commutes towards Nana Chowk and also
towards Lamington Road. Land use of
surrounding areas is commercial and
residential. Roadside hawkers and vegetables
venders together with movement of taxis and
privet cars and other vehicles make pedestrian
walking a difficult task. Use of footpaths by the
shop owners for displaying their goods further
aggravates the movements of the pedestrians.
In order to avoid obstructing vehicular traffic,
the design team had to create a unique design.
This skywalk showcases the vibrancy of the
city. On west side, the skywalk alignment is
taken along the centre line of the N. Barucha
Road upto Nana Chowk. At Nana Chowk
elliptical rotary is provided to connect the all
roads which are merging in Nana Chowk.
Pedestrians coming from railway FOB will
directly enter in to the skywalk and they will go
to different points for dispersal. On East side,
the skywalk is connected from Railway FOB to
ROB (i.e. Moullana Shaukatali Road).

Structural Aspects
As the project is in the centre of the city and in a
crowded area, the aesthetic appearance is
given the priority. The central pylon and cable
stayed rotary is the main specialty of the
project. And with the special lighting system of
LED lighting, this will be a very special
structure which gives special appearance
during the night time.

Rotary
The rotary is elliptical in shape as a single unit
with one axis of 66 meters and the other of 33
meters. It is fabricated in 15 segments and are
to be welded at site after erection. 10 numbers
of temporary stagings have been erected for
erection purpose which will be taken out after
the stress bars are in position.
Central Pylon
Steel structure is erected in a position which is
at 40m height and 2.50 m dia. upto 10m and
further 2.0 dia. made of 30mm thick M.S. plate.
The weight of the pylon is 110 M.T.

Structural Uniqueness
Very sleek concrete piers have been
provided to have easy, smooth vehicular
from all the roads around Nana Chowk.
Special lighting around the Rotary
(Outside) by LED system having different
colours, giving pleasant appearance in the
night. The stress bars also will have special
lighting.
This is situated in a crowded area where
several schools, colleges, Residential and
commercial area are there.
This will be very special structure in South
Mumbai and as a Tourist attraction also.

Macalloy Bars
Special Macalloy bars from United Kingdom
of 100mm dia. are used to support the rotary of
400MT in weight. Tailor made bars have been
procured from UK. The total weight of the
rotary and the traffic moving in the rotary is
